Robust estimates of the impact of broadcasting on match attendance in football
The paper employs data from 2,884 matches, of which 158 were televised, in the second tier of English football (currently known as The Football League Championship). It builds a model of the determinants of attendance that is designed to yield estimates of the proportionate changes in the size of crowds resulting from games being shown on either free-to-air or subscription based channels. The model has two innovatory features. First, it controls for the market size of home and away teams very precisely by including local population measures constructed from the application of GIS software and information on competition from other clubs. Second, it employs the Hausman-Taylor random effects estimator in order to take explicit account of the endogeneity of the television coverage variable and of other variables typically included in earlier studies based on ordinary least squares or fixed effects models of attendance. The Hausman-Taylor estimates of the impact of broadcasting are greater than those reported in such studies. In the case of free-to-air television, the negative impact is estimated as over 20 percent but for subscription television, which carried most of the transmissions, the negative effect was only of the order of 5 percent
Freedom of entry, market size and competitive outcome: evidence from English soccer
The paper tests, in the context of an open sports league, whether greater success is achieved by clubs in markets with larger populations. The relationship is strong but, to a limited extent, mitigated by more clubs establishing in large markets.

Outcome uncertainty and the couch potato audience
Previous studies of attendance demand for professional team sports have failed to yield clear- cut findings on the importance of outcome uncertainty to consumers. But potentially fewer problems should arise in examining the link between outcome uncertainty and demand in the television market for team sports, which in the case of English Premier League football is in fact a more important component in total club revenue. This study models both the choice of which games to show and the size of audience attracted by each game, exploiting data on audience sizes for games between 1993 and 2002. We propose a new measure of match outcome uncertainty and, from our results, both the broadcaster and the audience appear interested in competitive balance.

Major Galaxy Mergers Only Trigger the Most Luminous AGN
Using multiwavelength surveys of active galactic nuclei across a wide range
of bolometric luminosities (10^{43}<L_{bol}(erg/s<5x10^{46}) and redshifts
(0<z<3), we find a strong, redshift-independent correlation between the AGN
luminosity and the fraction of host galaxies undergoing a major merger. That
is, only the most luminous AGN phases are connected to major mergers, while
less luminous AGN appear to be driven by secular processes. Combining this
trend with AGN luminosity functions to assess the overall cosmic growth of
black holes, we find that ~50% by mass is associated with major mergers, while
only 10% of AGN by number, the most luminous, are connected to these violent
events. Our results suggest that to reach the highest AGN luminosities -where
the most massive black holes accreted the bulk of their mass - a major merger
appears to be required. The luminosity dependence of the fraction of AGN
triggered by major mergers can successfully explain why the observed scatter in
the M-\sigma relation for elliptical galaxies is significantly lower than in
spirals. The lack of a significant redshift dependence of the
L_{bol}-f_{merger} relation suggests that downsizing, i.e., the general decline
in AGN and star formation activity with decreasing redshift, is driven by a
decline in the frequency of major mergers combined with a decrease in the

The Accuracy of Morphological Decomposition of Active Galactic Nucleus Host Galaxies
In order to assess the accuracy with which we can determine the morphologies
of AGN host galaxies, we have simulated more than 50,000 ACS images of galaxies
with z < 1.25, using image and noise properties appropriate for the GOODS
survey. We test the effect of central point-source brightness on host galaxy
parameter recovery with a set of simulated AGN host galaxies made by adding
point sources to the centers of normal galaxies. We extend this analysis and
also quantify the recovery of intrinsic morphological parameters of AGN host
galaxies with a set of fully simulated inactive and AGN host galaxies.
We can reliably separate good from poor fit results using a combination of
reasonable error cuts, in the regime where L_{host}:L_{PS} > 1:4. We give
quantitative estimates of parameter errors as a function of
host-to-point-source ratio. In general, we separate host and point-source
magnitudes reliably at all redshifts; point sources are well recovered more
than 90% of the time, although spurious detection of central point sources can
be as high as 25% for bulge-dominated sources. We find a general correlation
between Sersic index and intrinsic bulge-to-total ratio, such that a host
galaxy with Sersic n < 1.5 generally has at least 80% of its light from a disk
component. Likewise, "bulge-dominated" galaxies with n > 4 typically derive at
least 70% of their total host galaxy light from a bulge, but this number can be
as low as 55%. Single-component Sersic fits to an AGN host galaxy are
statistically very reliable to z < 1.25 (for ACS survey data like ours). In
contrast, two-component fits involving separate bulge and disk components tend

We introduce a deconstructed model that incorporates both Higgsless and
top-color mechanisms. The model alleviates the typical tension in Higgsless
models between obtaining the correct top quark mass and keeping delta-rho
small. It does so by singling out the top quark mass generation as arising from
a Yukawa coupling to an effective top-Higgs which develops a small vacuum
expectation value, while electroweak symmetry breaking results largely from a
Higgsless mechanism. As a result, the heavy partners of the SM fermions can be

Performance analysis of an orbital angular momentum multiplexed amplify-and-forward radio relay chain with inter-modal crosstalk
The end-to-end spectral efficiency and bit error rate (BER) of an amplify-and-forward (AF) radio relay chain employing orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing is presented. The inherent divergence of a beam carrying OAM is overcome by means of a lens. Modelled and measured inter-modal crosstalk levels are incorporated into the analysis. The results show that an end-to-end spectral efficiency of up to 8 bits s−1 Hz−1 is achievable using four OAM modes to multiplex four parallel data streams over 20 hops, provided that the detrimental effects of inter-modal crosstalk are mitigated. The spectral efficiency is expected to scale further by using more OAM modes. The BER profile along the relay chain is analysed for each of the four OAM modes
