Incidence and Location of Eastern Pineshoot Borer Damage in Some Scotch Pine Christmas Tree Plantations in Michigan (Lepidoptera: Olethreutidae)
A survey of Christmas tree farms in Michigan revealed that 26% of the Scotch pine Christmas trees have one or more shoots injured by the eastern pineshoot borer, Eucosma gloriola Heinrich. Most attacks occurred on lateral branches in the top half of the tree. Only 2% of the observed trees had pineshoot borer injury on the terminal leader. Control except for normal shearing, was not recommended for most plantations
Preparing oxidizer coated metal fuel particles
A solid propellant composition of improved efficiency is described which includes an oxidizer containing ammonium perchlorate, and a powered metal fuel, preferably aluminum or beryllium, in the form of a composite. The metal fuel is contained in the crystalline lattice framework of the oxidizer, as well as within the oxidizer particles, and is disposed in the interstices between the oxidizer particles of the composition. The propellant composition is produced by a process comprising the crystallization of ammonium perchlorate in water, in the presence of finely divided aluminum or beryllium. A suitable binder is incorporated in the propellant composition to bind the individual particles of metal with the particles of oxidizer containing occluded metal
Ultra-dense phosphorus in germanium delta-doped layers
Phosphorus (P) in germanium (Ge) delta-doped layers are fabricated in
ultra-high vacuum by adsorption of phosphine molecules onto an atomically flat
clean Ge(001) surface followed by thermal incorporation of P into the lattice
and epitaxial Ge overgrowth by molecular beam epitaxy. Structural and
electrical characterizations show that P atoms are confined, with minimal
diffusion, into an ultra-narrow 2-nm-wide layer with an electrically-active
sheet carrier concentration of 4x10^13 cm-2 at 4.2 K. These results open up the
possibility of ultra-narrow source/drain regions with unprecedented carrier
densities for Ge n-channel field effect transistors
Preliminary Test of Prescribed Burning for Control of Maple Leaf Cutter (Lepidoptera: Incurvariidae)
Leaf litter burning in the spring resulted in 87.5% mortality of maple leaf cutter pupae, Paraclemensia acerifoliella (Fitch). No apparent damage was observed on sugar maple or beech trees within the burn area
General solution of an exact correlation function factorization in conformal field theory
We discuss a correlation function factorization, which relates a three-point
function to the square root of three two-point functions. This factorization is
known to hold for certain scaling operators at the two-dimensional percolation
point and in a few other cases. The correlation functions are evaluated in the
upper half-plane (or any conformally equivalent region) with operators at two
arbitrary points on the real axis, and a third arbitrary point on either the
real axis or in the interior. This type of result is of interest because it is
both exact and universal, relates higher-order correlation functions to
lower-order ones, and has a simple interpretation in terms of cluster or loop
probabilities in several statistical models. This motivated us to use the
techniques of conformal field theory to determine the general conditions for
its validity.
Here, we discover a correlation function which factorizes in this way for any
central charge c, generalizing previous results. In particular, the
factorization holds for either FK (Fortuin-Kasteleyn) or spin clusters in the
Q-state Potts models; it also applies to either the dense or dilute phases of
the O(n) loop models. Further, only one other non-trivial set of highest-weight
operators (in an irreducible Verma module) factorizes in this way. In this case
the operators have negative dimension (for c < 1) and do not seem to have a
physical realization.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, v2 minor revision
Spin-dependent transport in a quasiballistic quantum wire
We describe the transport properties of a 5 m long one-dimensional (1D)
quantum wire. Reduction of conductance plateaux due to the introduction of
weakly disorder scattering are observed. In an in-plane magnetic field, we
observe spin-splitting of the reduced conductance steps. Our experimental
results provide evidence that deviation from conductance quantisation is very
small for electrons with spin parallel and is about 1/3 for electrons with spin
anti-parallel. Moreover, in a high in-plane magnetic field, a spin-polarised 1D
channel shows a plateau-like structure close to which
strengthens with {\em increasing} temperatures. It is suggested that these
results arise from the combination of disorder and the electron-electron
interactions in the 1D electron gas.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, latex to be published in Phys. Rev. B (15/3/2000
Combinatorial Bounds and Characterizations of Splitting Authentication Codes
We present several generalizations of results for splitting authentication
codes by studying the aspect of multi-fold security. As the two primary
results, we prove a combinatorial lower bound on the number of encoding rules
and a combinatorial characterization of optimal splitting authentication codes
that are multi-fold secure against spoofing attacks. The characterization is
based on a new type of combinatorial designs, which we introduce and for which
basic necessary conditions are given regarding their existence.Comment: 13 pages; to appear in "Cryptography and Communications
Spontaneous breaking of time reversal symmetry in strongly interacting two dimensional electron layers in silicon and germanium
We report experimental evidence of a remarkable spontaneous time reversal
symmetry breaking in two dimensional electron systems formed by atomically
confined doping of phosphorus (P) atoms inside bulk crystalline silicon (Si)
and germanium (Ge). Weak localization corrections to the conductivity and the
universal conductance fluctuations were both found to decrease rapidly with
decreasing doping in the Si:P and Ge:P layers, suggesting an effect
driven by Coulomb interactions. In-plane magnetotransport measurements indicate
the presence of intrinsic local spin fluctuations at low doping, providing a
microscopic mechanism for spontaneous lifting of the time reversal symmetry.
Our experiments suggest the emergence of a new many-body quantum state when two
dimensional electrons are confined to narrow half-filled impurity bands
