    Dissipative hydrodynamics of relativistic shock waves in a Quark Gluon Plasma: comparing and benchmarking alternate numerical methods

    This paper presents numerical cross-comparisons and benchmark results for two different kinetic numerical methods, capable of describing relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics in a wide range of kinematic regimes, typical of relevant physics applications, such as transport phenomena in quark-gluon plasmas. We refer to relativistic lattice Boltzmann versus Montecarlo Test-Particle methods. Lacking any realistic option for accurate validation vis-a-vis experimental data, we check the consistency of our results against established simulation packages available in the literature. We successfully cross-compare the results of the two aforementioned numerical approaches for momentum integrated quantities like the hydrostatic and dynamical pressure profiles, the collective flow and the heat flux. These results corroborate the confidence on the robustness and correctness of these computational methods and on the accurate calibration of their numerical parameters with respect to the physical transport coefficients. Our numerical results are made available as supplemental material, with the aim of establishing a reference benchmark for other numerical approaches

    Pseudogap temperature as a Widom line in doped Mott insulators

    The pseudogap refers to an enigmatic state of matter with unusual physical properties found below a characteristic temperature T∗T^* in hole-doped high-temperature superconductors. Determining T∗T^* is critical for understanding this state. Here we study the simplest model of correlated electron systems, the Hubbard model, with cluster dynamical mean-field theory to find out whether the pseudogap can occur solely because of strong coupling physics and short nonlocal correlations. We find that the pseudogap characteristic temperature T∗T^* is a sharp crossover between different dynamical regimes along a line of thermodynamic anomalies that appears above a first-order phase transition, the Widom line. The Widom line emanating from the critical endpoint of a first-order transition is thus the organizing principle for the pseudogap phase diagram of the cuprates. No additional broken symmetry is necessary to explain the phenomenon.     Lymphatic drainage mapping with indirect lymphography for canine mammary tumors

    Mammary gland tumors are the most common canine neoplasms. They account for 25– 50% of all tumors diagnosed in bitches. Metastases and recurrences develop in about 35–70% of bitches following excision. The presence of regional lymph node metastases is a relevant factor affecting prognosis and treatment in cases of mammary gland tumors. The sentinel lymph node (SLN) is the first lymph node (or nodes) in the regional lymphatic basin that receives lymphatic flow from the primary neoplasm. The aim of this study is to investigate the SLN with indirect lymphography for a mammary tumor in dogs. The knowledge of the precise drainage pattern and SLN of the neoplastic mammary glands would provide clinically relevant information to the surgeon and to the oncologist, and it would be of high importance for the surgeon not only for performing the most adequate surgical excision but also for determining an accurate post-surgical prognosis

    In this paper, we describe the development of a new and innovative tool of video mashup. This application is an easy to use tool of video editing integrated in a cross-media platform; it works taking the information from a repository of videos and puts into action a process of semi-automatic editing supporting users in the production of video mashup. Doing so it gives vent to their creative side without them being forced to learn how to use a complicated and unlikely new technology. The users will be further helped in building their own editing by the intelligent system working behind the tool: it combines semantic annotation (tags and comments by users), low level features (gradient of color, texture and movements) and high level features (general data distinguishing a movie: actors, director, year of production, etc.) to furnish a pre-elaborated editing users can modify in a very simple way

    Reducing Intrathecal Baclofen Related Infections: Service Evaluation and Best Practice Guidelines

    Objectives: Intrathecal baclofen (ITB) pumps are an effective treatment for spasticity; however infection rates have been reported in 3–26% of patients in the literature. The multidisciplinary ITB service has been established at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, UCLH, Queen Square, London for over 20 years. Our study was designed to clarify the rate of infection in our ITB patient cohort and secondly, to formulate and implement best practice guidelines and to determine prospectively, whether they effectively reduced infection rates. / Methods: Clinical record review of all patients receiving ITB pre‐intervention; January 2013–May 2015, and following practice changes; June 2016–June 2018. / Results: Four of 118 patients receiving ITB during the first time period (3.4%, annual incidence rate of infection 1.4%) developed an ITB‐related infection (three following ITB pump replacement surgery, one after initial implant). Infections were associated with 4.2% of ITB‐related surgical procedures. Three of four pumps required explantation. Following change in practice (pre‐operative chlorhexidine skin wash and intraoperative vancomycin wash of the fibrous pocket of the replacement site), only one of 160 ITB patients developed infection (pump not explanted) in the second time period (0.6%, annual incidence rate 0.3%). The infection rate related to ITB surgical procedures was 1.1%. In cases of ITB pump replacement, the infection rate was reduced to 3.3% from 17.6%. / Conclusions: This study suggests that a straightforward change in clinical practice may lower infection rates in patients undergoing ITB therapy

    Helper-dependent adenovirus vectors devoid of all viral genes cause less myocardial inflammation compared with first-generation adenovirus vectors

    BACKGROUND: First-generation, E1-deleted (deltaE1) adenovirus vectors currently used in cardiovascular gene therapy trials are limited by tissue inflammation, mainly due to immune responses to viral gene products. Recently, helper-dependent (HD; also referred to as "gutless") adenovirus vectors devoid of all viral coding sequences have been shown to cause low inflammation when injected intravenously or into skeletal muscles. However, HD vectors have not been evaluated in cardiovascular tissues. METHODS AND RESULTS: HD and deltaE1 vectors containing a cytomegalovirus-driven expression cassette for the green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene were administered intramyocardially to adult rats (n = 54). GFP expression was measured by ELISA at varying time intervals after gene transfer. HD and deltaE1 vectors were equally efficient at transducing the myocardium. Tissue inflammation was assessed by immunostaining for leukocytes and quantitative real-time RT-PCR for cytokine mRNA expression. Monocyte/macrophages, CD4(+) and CD8(+) lymphocytes infiltrating the myocardium were less abundant with HD than deltaE1 vectors. Transcripts levels for pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1beta, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and RANTES were decreased with HD vectors. However, both vectors were associated with a decline in GFP expression over time, although low-level expression was occasionally detectable 10 weeks after HD vector administration. The two vectors transduced endothelial cells in rat arteries (n = 11) with comparable efficiencies. Vascular GFP expression was not detectable at 10 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: HD vectors are as efficient as deltaE1 vectors at transducing the myocardium and vascular endothelium, while causing less myocardial inflammation. Thus, HD vectors may be superior to earlier-generation adenovirus vectors for cardiovascular gene therapy applications
