Spontaneous parity violation and minimal Higgs models

In this paper we present a model for the spontaneous breaking of parity with two Higgs doublets and two neutral Higgs singlets which are even and odd under D-parity. The condition $v_R >>v_L$ can be satisfied without introducing bidoublets and it is induced by the breaking of D-parity through the vacuum expectation value of the odd Higgs singlet. Examples of left-right symmetric and mirror fermions models in grand unified theories are presented.Comment: Revised version. Accepted in Eur. Phys. Journal

Spatial accessibility and social inclusion: The impact of Portugal's last health reform

Health policies seek to promote access to health care and should provide appropriate geographical accessibility to each demographical functional group. The dispersal demand of health‐careservices and the provision for such services atfixed locations contribute to the growth of inequality intheir access. Therefore, the optimal distribution of health facilities over the space/area can lead toaccessibility improvements and to the mitigation of the social exclusion of the groups considered mostvulnerable. Requiring for such, the use of planning practices joined with accessibility measures. However,the capacities of Geographic Information Systems in determining and evaluating spatial accessibility inhealth system planning have not yet been fully exploited. This paper focuses on health‐care services planningbased on accessibility measures grounded on the network analysis. The case study hinges on mainlandPortugal. Different scenarios were developed to measure and compare impact on the population'saccessibility. It distinguishes itself from other studies of accessibility measures by integrating network data ina spatial accessibility measure: the enhanced two‐stepfloating catchment area. The convenient location forhealth‐care facilities can increase the accessibility standards of the population and consequently reducethe economic and social costs incurred. Recently, the Portuguese government implemented a reform thataimed to improve, namely, the access and equity in meeting with the most urgent patients. It envisaged,in terms of equity, the allocation of 89 emergency network points that ensured more than 90% of thepopulation be within 30 min from any one point in the network. Consequently, several emergency serviceswere closed, namely, in rural areas. This reform highlighted the need to improve the quality of the emergencycare, accessibility to each care facility, and equity in their access. Hence, accessibility measures becomean efficient decision‐making tool, despite its absence in effective practice planning. According to anapplication of this type of measure, it was possible to verify which levels of accessibility were decreased,including the most disadvantaged people, with a larger time of dislocation of 12 min between 2001 and 2011

Respostas hematológicas e plasmáticas de matrinxãs Brycon amazonicus exercitados e submetidos ao transporte.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar as respostas hematológicas do transporte em matrinxãs exercitados à velocidade moderada pelo período de 60 dias

Micropropagação de inhame da costa (Dioscorea rotundata) em diferentes intensidades luminosa.

Microestacas de plantas de inhame da costa (Dioscorea rotundata) pré-estabelecidas in vitro foram utilizadas como fonte de explantes iniciais e cultivadas em meio MS, contendo 100 mg L-1 de inositol, 20 mg L-1 de cisteina, 0,20 mg L-1 de ANA, 0,15 mg L-1 de BAP e 0,08 mg L-1 de GA3 testando diferentes intensidade luminosa. Aos 30 dias, avaliaram-se as seguintes variáveis: número de brotos e de folhas e altura de planta. As melhores respostas para os números de brotos formados ocorreram com os explantes cultivados em sala de crescimento 100% iluminada. Contudo verificou-se que a maior média para a altura de planta e a maior número de folhas foi encontrada com 30 % de iluminação

Compostagem com aeração forçada como alternativa de aproveitamento dos resíduos gerados pela agroindústria conserveira.

A indústria de conservas tem grande importância na economia da região de Pelotas, RS, produzindo um grande volume de resíduos orgânicos que não possuem um fim adequado. O trabalho objetivou encontrar uma alternativa a esse problema através da compostagem dos produtos oriundos dessa atividade para que esses sejam reutilizados como adubo orgânico. O trabalho foi desenvolvido em uma agroindústria de Pelotas, onde montaram-se duas baterias de reatores de compostagem com um sistema de aeração forçada e controle de temperatura para a preparação do composto. Foram testadas combinações de materiais orgânicos, utilizando-se os resíduos originados da indústria conserveira, associados à material rico em carbono. Durante o processo foram avaliadas a evolução da temperatura interna, a evolução do pH, a determinação dos componentes químicos, a relação carbono/nitrogênio e a identificação de fungos presentes no composto. Foi possível constatar que o produto gerado é viável como substituto de parte da adubação química de um pomar, reduzindo-se com isso o custo de produção

Using blog-like documents to investigate software practice: Benefits, challenges, and research directions

Background An emerging body of research is using grey literature to investigate software practice. One frequently occurring type of grey literature is the blog post. Whilst there are prospective benefits to using grey literature and blog posts to investigate software practice, there are also concerns about the quality of such material. Objectives To identify and describe the benefits and challenges to using blog‐like content to investigate software practice, and to scope directions for further research. Methods We conduct a review of previous research, mainly within software engineering, to identify benefits, challenges, and directions and use that review to complement our experiences of using blog posts in research. Results and Conclusion We identify and organise benefits and challenges of using blog‐like documents in software engineering research. We develop a definition of the type of blog‐like document that should be of (more) value to software engineering researchers. We identify and scope several directions in which to progress research into and with blog‐like documents. We discuss similarities and differences in secondary and primary studies that use blog‐like documents and similarities and differences between the use of blog‐like documents and the use of already established research methods, eg, interview and survey
