Is Media Coverage of Steroids On The Verge Of Striking Out Baseball Stars?
Over the last 150 years, baseball has been one of the most popular American sports. Ever since its inception in the 19th century, it has been known as our “Great American Past-Time”. As the sport of baseball has evolved and developed into the game it is today, there have been controversial scandals that have helped reshape our perceptions of baseball’s biggest stars
Magical Science: Chemistry Magic Tricks Just for Fun! (workshop)
Chemistry magic tricks are simply chemistry demonstrations cleverly performed, and are highly valuable for engaging and motivating students in the study of chemistry. Our agenda has been to adapt common chemistry demonstrations into presentations with clever twists, essentially turning them into magic tricks. This workshop will show how a science demonstration can be turned into a science magic trick simply by adapting the presentation. Science magic tricks provide a unique forum not only for expanding scientific knowledge, but moreover scientific interest. Our hope is that students will be engaged and motivated in the future study of chemistry

How Catastrophic Innovation Failure Affects Organizational and Industry Legitimacy: The 2014 Virgin Galactic Test Flight Crash
We examine how catastrophic innovation failure affects organizational and industry legitimacy in nascent sectors by analyzing the interactions between Virgin Galactic and stakeholders in the space community in the aftermath of the firm’s 2014 test flight crash. Following catastrophic innovation failure, we find that industry participants use their interpretations of the failure to either uphold or challenge the legitimacy of the firm while maintaining the legitimacy of the industry. These dynamics yield two interesting effects. First, we show that, in upholding the legitimacy of the industry, different industry participants rhetorically redraw the boundaries of the industry to selectively include players they consider legitimate and exclude those they view as illegitimate: detracting stakeholders constrain the boundaries of the industry by excluding the firm or excluding the firm and its segment, whereas the firm and supporting stakeholders amplify the boundaries of the industry by including firms in adjacent high-legitimacy sectors. Second, we show that, in assessing organizational legitimacy, the firm and its stakeholders differ in the way they approach distinctiveness between the identities of the industry and the firm. Detracting stakeholders differentiate the firm from the rest of the industry and isolate it, whereas the firm and supporting stakeholders reidentify the firm with the industry, embedding the firm within it. Overall, our findings illuminate the effects that catastrophic innovation failure has over high-order dynamics that affect the evolution of nascent industries

Developments in Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy of Polymer Systems
Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has long emerged as a valuable technique for characterizing the molecular structure, conformation, and dynamics of polymer chains in various polymer systems. The principles of the solid-state 13C NMR cross-polarization experiment are described along with corresponding relaxation measurements. The ensuing recent applications of these techniques to different polymer systems are reviewed, with selected examples that have appeared in the recent literature. All of these applications of solid-state NMR to polymers have one feature in common: the interpretation of spectroscopic observations as related to the structural features and physical properties of the polymer
How Firms Frame Catastrophic Innovation Failure
We examine how catastrophic innovation failure affects organizational and industry legitimacy in nascent
sectors by analyzing the interactions between Virgin Galactic and stakeholders in the space community in
the aftermath of the firm’s 2014 test flight crash. Following catastrophic innovation failure, we find that
industry participants use their interpretations of the failure to either uphold or challenge the legitimacy of
the firm, while maintaining the legitimacy of the industry. These dynamics yield two interesting effects.
First, we show that, in upholding the legitimacy of the industry, different industry participants rhetorically
re-draw the boundaries of the industry to selectively include players they consider ‘legitimate’ and
exclude those they view as ‘illegitimate:’ detracting stakeholders constrain the boundaries of the industry
by excluding the firm or excluding the firm and its segment, while the firm and supporting stakeholders
amplify the boundaries of the industry by including firms in adjacent high-legitimacy sectors. Second, we
show that, in assessing organizational legitimacy, the firm and its stakeholders differ in the way they
approach distinctiveness between the identities of the industry and the firm. Detracting stakeholders
differentiate the firm from the rest of the industry and isolate it, while the firm and supporting
stakeholders re-identify the firm with the industry, embedding the firm within it. Overall, our findings
illuminate the effects that catastrophic innovation failure has over high-order dynamics that affect the
evolution of nascent industries
Reflection confocal nanoscopy using a super-oscillatory lens
A Superoscillatory lens (SOL) is known to produce a sub-diffraction hotspot
which is useful for high-resolution imaging. However, high-energy rings called
sidelobes coexist with the central hotspot. Additionally, SOLs have not yet
been directly used to image reflective objects due to low efficiency and poor
imaging properties. We propose a novel reflection confocal nanoscope which
mitigates these issues by relaying the SOL intensity pattern onto the object
and use conventional optics for detection. We experimentally demonstrate
super-resolution by imaging double bars with 330 nm separation using a 632.8 nm
excitation and a 0.95 NA objective. We also discuss the enhanced contrast
properties of the SOL nanoscope against a laser confocal microscope, and the
degradation of performance while imaging large objects.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, supplementary include
