    PREVALENCE OF CHAGAS DISEASE AMONG BLOOD DONOR CANDIDATES IN TRIANGULO MINEIRO, MINAS GERAIS STATE, BRAZIL

    Despite public health campaigns and epidemiological surveillance activities, Chagas disease remains a major health problem in Latin America. According to data from the World Health Organization, there are approximately 7-8 million people infected with Trypanosoma cruzi worldwide, a large percentage of which in Latin America. This study aims to examine the serological profile of blood donors in blood banks of Hemominas hematology center, in the town of Ituiutaba, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The study sample consisted of 53,941 blood donors, which were grouped according to gender and age. Sample collections were performed from January 1991 to December 2011, and 277 donors (0.5%) were considered serologically ineligible due to Chagas disease. Analysis of data showed no significant difference between genders. As for age, the highest proportion of ineligible donors was from 40 to 49 years (30%), and there was a positive correlation between increasing age and the percentage of patients seropositive for Chagas disease. Therefore, adopting strategies that allow the safe identification of donors with positive serology for Chagas disease is essential to reduce or eliminate indeterminate serological results

    Utilization of Glycerol from Biodiesel Industry By-Product into Several Higher Value Product

    Since the 1980s the energy demand has been increasing steadily, including diesel fuel. On the other hand the oil reserve in the world was increasingly limited because of being the product that could not be renewed. Therefore, effort was carried out to look for the alternative fuel that could be renewed and environment friendly. The alternative energy from new renewable energy is a solution to reduce the dependence of fossil energy. The renewable energy consists of the energy of water, wind, biomass or biofuels, solar energy, ocean energy, and geothermal energy. One of the biofuels is biodiesel. Biodiesel is diesel fuel which is made from vegetable oil by transesterification. The abundance of glycerol will result in declining sales value of glycerol as a by-product of the biodiesel plant. It should be anticipated to improve the usefulness of glycerol both in terms of quantity and its variants. The increasing usefulness of glycerol will result in the higher price of glycerol that will increase the profitability of biodiesel plants. Among the usefulness of glycerol investigated is as an ingredient in pharmaceutical products, polyether, emulsifiers, fabric softener, stabilizers, preservatives in bread, ice cream, cosmetic ingredients, a propellant binder, and others. This chapter explains the utilization of glycerol to produce triacetin as bioadditive and polyglycidyl nitrate (PGN) as a propellant binder. Triacetin is used to increase octane number of fuel and improve the biodiesel’s performance. Propellant binder consists of two kinds of non-energetic polymers and polymer energetic.     EFFECT OF ALUMINUM ON URINARY ACIDIFICATION IN THE RAT - INFLUENCE OF PARATHYROID-HORMONE

    1. The influence of thyroparathyroidectomy and/or acidosis on renal function and specifically on acid excretion was studied in rats treated with a cumulative dose of 2 mg of aluminium.2. Aluminium-treated and non-treated thyroparathyroidectomized rats showed a significant decrease in glomerular filtration rate and in the urinary/plasma inulin ratio without alteration in net acid excretion.3. Non-treated thyroparathyroidectomized acidotic rats showed a significant fall in the amount of ammonium excreted and in overall acid excretion, suggesting that parathyroid hormone participates in an important way in the defence against metabolic acidosis.4. The effects of acidosis, thyroparathyroidectomy and aluminium treatment on renal function parameters were not additive, suggesting a common final mechanism. In normal or acidotic aluminium-treated rats, thyroparathyroidectomy had no effect on renal acid excretion, suggesting that aluminium even in low doses inhibited the action of PTH on the renal tubule.5.
