    Booms, busts and retirement timing

    Cyclical fluctuations - which affect both asset and labour markets - can have an ambiguous effect on retirement. We explore this empirically using data from the British Household Panel Survey, exploiting small area geographic identifers to match local house prices, earnings and unemployment to respondents. We match stock prices via the date of interview. Our results show little evidence of any positive wealth effects despite large spatial and temporal variations in asset prices over the period analysed. We find more response to local labour market conditions - increases in unemployment are associated with earlier retirement while increases in wages delay retirement

    Gliosarcoma with neuroaxis metastases.

    Gliosarcomas are rare tumours of the central nervous system, with a well-known capacity for metastasis. When they metastasise, the dissemination occurs more frequently via the haematogenous route to extraneural sites. Metastasis-spread through the cerebrospinal fluid is extremely rare. We present the case of a 58-year-old man who underwent a gross total resection of a lesion in the left temporal lobe. The histological findings revealed a gliosarcoma and the patient received radiotherapy followed by chemotherapy. Seven months after surgery, while the patient remained neurologically intact, brain and spinal cord MRI revealed tumour recurrence and neuroaxis metastases through the traffic routes of the cerebrospinal fluid. The patient died 8 months after the diagnosis. A PubMed search regarding metastatic gliosarcoma up to June 2015 was also carried out. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of gliosarcoma metastases to the brain and spinal cord leptomeninges

    Early pneumococcal clearance in mice induced by systemic immunization with recombinant BCG PspA-PdT prime and protein boost correlates with cellular and humoral immune response in bronchoalveolar fluids (BALF)

    © 2019 The Author(s) An effective immunological response in the lungs during a pneumococcal infection is a key factor to the bacteria clearance and prevention of sepsis. In order to develop broad-range pneumococcal vaccines several pneumococcal proteins and strong adjuvants have been investigated. Previously, we constructed a recombinant BCG (rBCG) strain expressing a fragment of PspA (Pneumococcal surface protein A) fused to PdT (detoxified form of pneumolysin). Immunization of mice with a priming dose of rBCG PspA-PdT followed by a booster dose of rPspA-PdT fused protein induced a high antibody response in the serum and protected mice against lethal challenge. Here, we investigated the humoral and cellular immune response in the Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Immunization of mice with rBCG PspA-PdT / rPspA-PdT induced rapid clearance of bacteria after challenge, an early control of the cellular influx and reduced inflammatory cytokine levels in the BALF. In addition, rBCG PspA-PdT / rPspA-PdT induced higher lymphocyte recruitment to the lungs at 48 h, showing an increased percentage of CD4+ T cells. Furthermore, BALF samples from mice immunized with rBCG PspA-PdT / PspA-PdT showed high binding of IgG2c and enhanced complement deposition on the pneumococcal surface; antibody binding was specific to PspA as no binding was observed to a PspA-knockout strain. Taken together, our results show that the immunization with rBCG PspA-PdT / rPspA-PdT induces humoral and cellular immune responses in the lungs, promotes an early clearance of pneumococci and protects against the systemic dissemination of pneumococci

    Ganglioglioma of the neurohypophysis

    The normal infundibulum and neurohypophysis consist entirely of neuronal processes, the neuronal cell bodies of which lie within the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus and supportive glial cells or pituicytes. The finding of neurons within the neurohypophysis is exceedingly rare, as are ganglion cell tumors at this site. In this paper, we report a ganglion cell tumor of the neurohypophysis found incidentally at autopsy. Despite chronic hypertension and the finding of some vasopressin immunoreactivity in lesional neurons, the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) was excluded on the basis of normal serum sodium levels.     The impact of users’ cognitive function on evaluator perceptions of usability

    To explore the association between the user’s cognitive function and usability reported by the evaluator. A cross-sectional study was conducted with a community-based sample. Data about participants’ age, sex, education, sleep quantity, subjective memory complaints, and cognitive function were collected. A usability session was conducted to evaluate a digital solution called Brain on Track. Independent linear-regression analyses were used to explore univariable and multivariable associations between evaluator-reported usability assessment and the users’ cognitive function, age, sex, education, sleep quantity, and subjective memory complaints. A total of 238 participants entered this study, of which 161 (67.6%) were females and the mean age was 42 (SD 12.9) years old. All variables (age, education, sleep quantity, subjective memory complaints and cognitive function) except sex were significantly associated with evaluator-reported usability in the univariable analysis (p < 0.05). Cognitive function, age, education, and subjective memory complaints remained significant in the multivariable model (F = 38.87, p < 0.001) with an adjusted R2 of 0.391. Cognition scores alone showed an adjusted R2 of 0.288. This work suggests that cognitive function impacts evaluator reported usability, alongside other users’ characteristics and needs to be considered in the usability evaluation. © 2022, The Author(s).This study was partially supported by the Águeda City Council as part of a community cognitive screening program

    Geoprivacy in Neighbourhoods and Health Research: A Mini-Review of the Challenges and Best Practices in Epidemiological Studies

    Neighbourhood and health research often relies on personal location data (e.g., home address, daily itineraries), despite the risks of geoprivacy breaches. Thus, geoprivacy is an important emerging topic, contemplated in international regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation. In this mini-review, we briefly assess the potential risks associated with the usage of personal location data and provide geoprivacy-preserving recommendations to be considered in epidemiological research. Risks include inference of personal information that the individual does not wish to disclose, reverse-identification and security breaches. Various measures should be implemented at different stages of a project (pre-data collection, data processing, data analysis/publication and data sharing) such as informed consent, pseudo-anonymization and geographical methods.     Ketogenic Diet and Drug-Induced Hepatotoxicity During Tuberculosis Treatment

    When therapy with hepatotoxic drugs is being considered, all other possible contributing agents of liver damage should be held to account. While not generally considered a risk factor, we present 2 cases in which ketogenic diet (KD) may have played a role in liver injury due to antituberculosis drugs. Ketogenic diet has been linked to liver injury, and while its pathophysiology remains obscure, carnitine depletion could play a role, as it is a mechanism of liver damage common to KD and antituberculosis drug regimens.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
