Antioxidant mechanisms to counteract TiO2-nanoparticles toxicity in wheat leaves and roots are organ dependent
Nanoparticles (NP) bioactivity is under deep scrutiny. In this work, the antioxidant response to TiO2-NP in wheat (Triticum aestivum) was determined. For that, enzymatic and the non-enzymatic antioxidants were evaluated in plants exposed to the P25 anatase:rutile material composed of TiO2-NP and under environmentally realistic doses (0; 5; 50; 150 mg/L for 20 days). Shoot but not root growth was reduced. In leaves, thiol metabolism and ascorbate accumulation were the preferred route whereas in roots the pre-existing antioxidant capacity was preferentially utilized. Both leaves and roots showed increased glutathione reductase and dehydroascorbate reductase activities and decreased ascorbate peroxidase activity. Roots, nevertheless, presented higher enzymatic basal levels than leaves. On the other hand, when examining non-enzymatic antioxidants, the ratio of reduced-to-oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) increased in leaves and decreased in roots. Exposed leaves also presented higher total ascorbate accumulation compared to roots. TiO2-NP exposure down regulated, with more prominence in roots, antioxidant enzyme genes encoding catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, monodehydroascorbate reductase and dehydroascorbate reductase. In leaves, superoxide dismutase gene expression was increased. All data pinpoint to TiO2-NP toxicity above 5 mg/L, with aerial parts being more susceptible, which draws concerns on the safety doses for the use of these NPs in agricultural practices.publishe
Seroprevalence of Chikungunya Virus after Its Emergence in Brazil.
Chikungunya has had a substantial impact on public health because of the magnitude of its epidemics and its highly debilitating symptoms. We estimated the seroprevalence, proportion of symptomatic cases, and proportion of chronic form of disease after introduction of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) in 2 cities in Brazil. We conducted the population-based study through household interviews and serologic surveys during October-December 2015. In Feira de Santana, we conducted a serologic survey of 385 persons; 57.1% were CHIKV-positive. Among them, 32.7% reported symptoms, and 68.1% contracted chronic chikungunya disease. A similar survey in Riachão do Jacuípe included 446 persons; 45.7% were CHIKV-positive, 41.2% reported symptoms, and 75.0% contracted the chronic form. Our data confirm intense CHIKV transmission during the continuing epidemic. Chronic pain developed in a high proportion of patients. We recommend training health professionals in management of chronic pain, which will improve the quality of life of chikungunya-affected persons
Effect of a gel containing pilocarpine on vaginal atrophy in castrated rats
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of Carbopol gel formulations containing pilocarpine on the morphology and morphometry of the vaginal epithelium of castrated rats. METHODS: Thirty-one female Wistar-Hannover rats were randomly divided into four groups: the control Groups I (n=7, rats in persistent estrus; positive controls) and II (n=7, castrated rats, negative controls) and the experimental Groups, III (n=8) and IV (n=9). Persistent estrus (Group I) was achieved with a subcutaneous injection of testosterone propionate on the second postnatal day. At 90 days postnatal, rats in Groups II, III and IV were castrated and treated vaginally for 14 days with Carbopol gel (vehicle alone) or Carbopol gel containing 5% and 15% pilocarpine, respectively. Next, all of the animals were euthanized and their vaginas were removed for histological evaluation. A non-parametric test with a weighted linear regression model was used for data analysis (
Attitudes of nurses towards families: validation of the scale Families' Importance in Nursing Care - Nurses Attitudes
The attitudes of nurses towards families determine the care process. With this study, we aimed to obtain an instrument that would allow us to learn about this variable. Hence, our purpose was to perform the cross-cultural adaptation and evaluate the psychometric features of the Portuguese version of the instrument Families' Importance in Nursing Care - Nurses Attitudes (FINC-NA), which aims to evaluate the attitudes of nurses towards the importance of involving the patient's family in the nursing care. The method recommended by the literature was followed. The sample consisted of 136 nurses working in primary health care. The results obtained in the reliability tests showed good internal consistency (Cronbach's Alpha=0.87). The psychometric study permits us to state that the Portuguese version of the FINC-NA, which in Portuguese is referred to as A importância das famílias nos cuidados de enfermagem - atitudes dos enfermeiros (IFCE-AE), is a reliable and valid tool.
