protótipo, wizard of oz, especificamente implementado para permitir
desenvolvimento deste trabalho.Television underwent by many socio-technological changes since its beginning
in the fifties. Beyond some inherent technological factors like the transition from
black and white to color and the digitalization of both audio and video
components, the consolidation of the Internet with its high level of
customization of user experience and massive amount of available content,
helped television to be driven towards an interactive dimension.
Thus, the viewer happened to be able to enjoy from a viewing experience that
can, first, be more participatory as he can, for example, vote in TV shows or
express his opinion about the quality of a TV program and, second, be more
personalized allowing him, for instance, receiving TV contents appropriated to
his profile and context of use.
However, this more participatory and customizable experience lacks of an
automatic identification process of the person/s that is/are watching TV.
Despite significant advances in the area of interactive television (iTV), the
automatic identification of viewers, especially if a non-intrusive way is at stake,
is still a research area with many unsolved topics.
Elder people, in particular, are major consumers of television and represent a
very sizable chunk of viewers that can benefit from the potential offered by this
interactivity in many types of services. A growing number of these services are
designed with the aim to promote active aging and life support, thus seniors
can benefit in various aspects of their daily lives, if they use them.
In this age group, the automatic identification of viewers has a special role in a
personalized and targeted usage of these services, acting as an enhancer of
the user experience. However, due to a broad range of physical, sensorial,
cognitive and digital literacy characteristics inherent to the elderly, it was
envisaged that the definition of the most suitable viewer identification
technology would be dependent of the actual user/viewer profile. Actually, the
user identification method can be based in several technology options, e.g. a
fingerprint reader placed in the remote, a wearable tag, an RFID card, a facial
or a voice recognition system, making it necessary deciding on the best
approach for each possible viewer profile.
The research was carried out in order to leverage the design of a decision
matrix that, using the characteristics of the senior's profile, computes the most
suitable viewer identification method.
The methodology used to build the matrix was based on multiple sets of
interviews and evaluation sessions with elderly viewers in a longitudinal
prototyping process. We started with a set of exploratory interviews that
allowed a better understanding how seniors see iTV technology. After, it was
implemented a fully functional prototype (that allowed to test a particular set of
identification technologies), that was evaluated by seniors participants, to find a
clear trend about the preference of identification technologies. Despite these tests were a step forward (since they allow to understand that
viewer’s characteristics can influence their preferences about the identification
technology), they were not totally conclusive mainly due to the fact that they
only had allowed testing a particular set of technologies among all that are
referenced in this research.
The aforementioned characteristics became the inputs of the decision matrix,
leading to a new set of tests to start filling in its cells. These tests were based
on a wizard of oz prototype that allowed participants to experiment all
identification technologies referred in this research. All these tests with seniors
were made at their homes preceded of the evaluation of their functional
characteristics (the ones identified in previous test and that can influence
viewer's preferences).
The document ends reporting the main conclusions and examples of the matrix
usage and with some points to next steps of this work
Parking goes mobile: a research proposal
This paper presents a research proposal to study the
process to create a mobile application considering important
restrictions on the development schedule and on the team size.
The objective of the application is to help citizens to find parking
spots in urban context. A theoretical framework is presented,
based on several dimensions, such as the software development
approach, the different mobile application’s types and its
implications, the specific design issues for mobile applications,
the technological frameworks that could be used, and an analysis
of the existent applications that have similar objectives. The
research proposal is described: its objectives, the research
question, and a discussion on technical options related with the
dimensions of the theoretical framework. The following steps of
the project are outlined
Watch TV is a social activity
motivated by feelings of comfort,
happiness, social relationships and
leisure (McQuail, 1987). When seniors
are in front of TV set some of these
emotional states are enhanced most of
the times due to isolation and loneliness.
Considering this reality and the
technological developments in diffusion
networks, the TV operators are betting on
TV experience personalization. Despite
this fact, to boost the personalization,
it is necessary to integrate a user
identification system (sID) that allows
the development of interactive TV
services, which provides functionalities
perfectly tuned with the person in front
of TV set, using user identification
info. In this work we present the set of
variables and the measure techniques
for each one that the TV provider should
consider to select the user identification
system (sID) more suitable for a senior

No entanto,
For seniors Television is the primary means of
entertainment and information. In it they seek
sensations that enhance their well-being what motivates
them to long periods of television consumption. Backing
up this closeness between senior and technological
artifacts that provide television consumption, the
research described here seeks, through an interactive
television (iTV) application in the provision of health care
and welfare, to define the most suitable viewer
identification system (sID) in this context. This iTV
application has components related aspects of health
(such as medication monitoring, informative videos, communication with health professionals), with aspects
of community (communication, information) and also the
events of daily life such as transport information,
weather, among other. It was made a case study based
on a functional prototype to define the sID most suitable
to this target audience
Watching TV is changing and becoming more personalized as we witness a spread use of
interactive television, Personal Video Recorders (PVR) and Set-Top-Boxes (STB)
enabling access to time-shifted content and a large range of interactive services.
However, this technological mediation does not guarantee by itself an effective
personalization of content, since it relies on the STB identification being not appropriated
for a multi-viewer scenario. So, knowledge about who is in front of TV set becomes of
paramount importance, especially for TV operators’ they can provide services perfectly
targeted to the viewers.
In this context, elderly (avid consumers of television) are a specific type of users that can
benefit from services based on a non-intrusive identification system. This work aims to
study this issue and identify a layer of customizable services which can improve the
viewing experience of elderly.FCTiNeighbour TVPTDC/CCICOM/100824/200
Mobile applications for natural parks: guidelines study for the development of a mobile device application
Context aware mobile applications are being adopted as a premium solution to enhance and augment the user experience of
visitors of natural parks and other public and open spaces. Under this assumption, this paper reports on a selection of existent mobile park applications featuring a set of tests that helped electing their key features. The performed evaluation also allowed setting up a proposal for design guidelines aiming the development of such a kind of applications
Discovering TV contents in a second screen app: perspectives from Portuguese and Brazilian markets
The actual trends in the TV ecosystem present considerable social, organisational and technological challenges in the value-chain
of Pay-TV operators. Among these is the global increase in bandwidth, the shifting of the storage capacity in the cloud, and the
affordability of traditional content providers when facing the competitiveness of OTT content. In this framework, Pay-TV
operators are presenting their customers with a huge offer of contents available from linear-TV, Catch-up TV and VoD services.
However, this overloaded TV ecosystem is likely to lead viewers to get lost and face difficulties when deciding what to watch on
TV. To overcome these difficulties and be competitive, operators need to provide innovative and trustable solutions, alternative
to traditional EPGs, enabling users to discover the right content for a specific context.
To target this problem, a second screen application (GUIDER) was developed to offer an original user interface, based on a
multidimensional spatial representation of TV contents for those mindless zapping situations where viewers do not know, in
advance, what they are in the mood to watch.
This paper reports on the evaluation of the GUIDER App, aiming to determine the level of interest in the several features
implemented and in the filtering criteria available; identify usability issues; and predicting the future uses of the App in domestic
scenarios. The evaluation was made in Portugal and Brazil with a convenience sample of 20 participants in each country. Despite
the differences in the TV ecosystems, both countries appear to be promising markets for this new kind of second screen
applications, with Brazilians showing a higher perception of the added value of GUIDER
invisuais. The Internet had an enormous development in the last few years and its impact
