Hemispheric asymmetry in the sunspot cycle as a nonextensive phenomenon
The appearance of dark sunspots over the solar photosphere is not considered
to be symmetric between the northern and southern hemispheres. Among the
different conclusions obtained by several authors, we can point out that the
North-South asymmetry is a real and systematic phenomenon and is not due to
random variability. In the present work, we selected the sunspot area data of a
sample of 13 solar cycles divided by hemisphere extracted from the Marshall
Space Flight Centre (MSFC) database to investigate the behavior of probability
distributions using an out-of-equilibrium statistical model a.k.a non-extensive
statistical mechanics. Based on this statistical framework, we obtained that
the non-extensive entropic parameter has a semi-sinusoidal variation with a
period of 22 year (Hale cycle). Among the most important results, we can
highlight that the asymmetry index revealed the dominance of the
northern hemisphere against the southern one. Thus, we concluded that the
parameter can be considered an effective measure for diagnosing
long-term variations of the solar dynamo. Finally, our study opens a new
approach to investigating solar variability from the nonextensive perspective.Comment: 17 pages, 2 tables and 5 figures. Submitted to Solar Physic
Involvement of Trichoderma harzianum Epl-1 Protein in the Regulation of Botrytis Virulence- and Tomato Defense-Related Genes
[EN] Several Trichoderma spp. are well known for their ability to: (i) act as important biocontrol agents against phytopathogenic fungi; (ii) function as biofertilizers; (iii) increase the tolerance of plants to biotic and abiotic stresses; and (iv) induce plant defense responses via the production and secretion of elicitor molecules. In this study, we analyzed the gene-regulation effects of Trichoderma harzianum Epl-1 protein during the interactions of mutant ∆epl-1 or wild-type T. harzianum strains with: (a) the phytopathogen Botrytis cinerea and (b) with tomato plants, on short (24 h hydroponic cultures) and long periods (4-weeks old plants) after Trichoderma inoculation. Our results indicate that T. harzianum Epl-1 protein affects the in vitro expression of B. cinerea virulence genes, especially those involved in the botrydial biosynthesis (BcBOT genes), during the mycoparasitism interaction. The tomato defense-related genes were also affected, indicating that Epl-1 is involved in the elicitation of the salicylic acid pathway. Moreover, Epl-1 also regulates the priming effect in host tomato plants and contributes to enhance the interaction with the host tomato plant during the early stage of root colonizationSIThis work was supported by the State of São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) (Proc. 2012/16895-4, Proc. 2013/24452-8, and Proc. 2016/04274-6). Characterization of the acetohydroxyacid synthase multigene family in the tetraploide plant Chenopodium quinoa
Background: Currently, the technology called Clearfield\uae is used
in the development of crops resistant to herbicides that inhibit the
enzyme acetohydroxy acid synthase (AHAS, EC 2.2.1.6). AHAS is the first
enzyme of the biosynthetic pathway that produces the branched-chain of
the essential amino acids valine, leucine, and isoleucine. Therefore,
multiple copies of the AHAS gene might be of interest for breeding
programs targeting herbicide resistance. In this work, the
characterization of the AHAS gene was accomplished for the Chenopodium
quinoa Regalona-Baer cultivar. Cloning, sequencing, and Southern
blotting were conducted to determine the number of gene copies.
Results: The presence of multiple copies of the AHAS gene as has been
shownpreviously in several other species is described. Six copies of
the AHAS gene were confirmed with Southern blot analyses. CqHAS1 and
CqAHAS2 variants showed the highest homology with AHAS mRNA sequences
found in the NR Database. A third copy, CqAHAS3, shared similar
fragments with both CqAHAS1 and CqAHAS2, suggesting duplication through
homeologous chromosomes pairing. Conclusions: The presence of
multiple copies of the gene AHAS shows that gene duplication is a
common feature in polyploid species during evolution. In addition, to
our knowledge, this is the first report of the interaction of
sub-genomes in quinoa
Towards Automated Semantic Segmentation in Mammography Images
Mammography images are widely used to detect non-palpable breast lesions or
nodules, preventing cancer and providing the opportunity to plan interventions
when necessary. The identification of some structures of interest is essential
to make a diagnosis and evaluate image adequacy. Thus, computer-aided detection
systems can be helpful in assisting medical interpretation by automatically
segmenting these landmark structures. In this paper, we propose a deep
learning-based framework for the segmentation of the nipple, the pectoral
muscle, the fibroglandular tissue, and the fatty tissue on standard-view
mammography images. We introduce a large private segmentation dataset and
extensive experiments considering different deep-learning model architectures.
Our experiments demonstrate accurate segmentation performance on variate and
challenging cases, showing that this framework can be integrated into clinical
practice.Comment: 6 page
