Polymorphisms in base excision repair genes and thyroid cancer risk

Pingarilho (SFRH/BD/22612/2005) from FCT are also acknowledgedThyroid cancer (TC) is the most frequent endocrine malignancy, accounting however for only 1-2\% of all human cancers, and tilt: best-established risk factor for TC is radiation exposure, particularly during childhood. Since the BER pathway seems to play an important role in the repair of DNA damage induced by IR and other genotoxicants, we carried out a hospital-based case-control study in order to evaluate the potential modifying role of 6 BER polymorphisms on the individual susceptibility to non-familial TC in 109 TC patients receiving iodine-131, and 217 controls matched for age ( 2 years), gender and ethnicity. Our results do not reveal a significant involvement of XRCCI Arg194Trp and Arg399Gln, OGGI Ser326Cys, APEXI Asp148Glu, MUTYH Gln335His and,PARPI Val762Ala polymorphisms on the individual susceptibility towards TC, mostly in aggreement with the limited available evidence. By histological stratification analyis, we observed that the association between the presence of heterozygozity in the MUTYH Gln335His polymorphism and TC risk almost reached significance for the papillary subtype of TC. This was the first time that the putative association between this polymorphism and TC susceptibility was evaluated. However, since the sample size was modest, the possibility of a type I error should not be excluded and this result should, therefore, be interpreted with caution. More in depth studies involving larger populations should be pursued in order to further clarify the potential usefulness of the MUTYH Gln335His genotype as a predictive biomarker of susceptibility to TC and the role of the remaining BER polymorphisms on TC susceptibility.publishersversionpublishe

Quintessential inflation from 5D warped product spaces on a dynamical foliation

Assuming the existence of a 5D purely kinetic scalar field on the class of warped product spaces we investigate the possibility of mimic both an inflationary and a quintessential scenarios on 4D hypersurfaces, by implementing a dynamical foliation on the fifth coordinate instead of a constant one. We obtain that an induced chaotic inflationary scenario with a geometrically induced scalar potential and an induced quasi-vacuum equation of state on 4D dynamical hypersurfaces is possible. While on a constant foliation the universe can be considered as matter dominated today, in a family of 4D dynamical hypersurfaces the universe can be passing for a period of accelerated expansion with a deceleration parameter nearly -1. This effect of the dynamical foliation results negligible at the inflationary epoch allowing for a chaotic scenario and becomes considerable at the present epoch allowing a quintessential scenario.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure Accepted for publication in Modern Physics Letters

ALGUMAS NOTAS ÀS POLÍTICAS PÚBLICAS: HISTORICIDADE E POPULAÇÕES

Abstract: the objective of this article is to problematize the historical construction of public policies from Brazil, considering its recent historicity and two specific populations: the homeless people and the LGBT+. We understand that the historicity and the population issue that we have highlighted provide us with analytical questions to think about governability and the historical relationships established between the Brazilian State and the lives under its government. We will be situated in the field of problematization that brings together the theoretical construction and the political-social struggle of militancy in the academy and in social movements, from the social control and the scientific production. We highlight how the current dismantling put the populations we mentioned at risk, while also referring to structural issues of the historical relations between the State and lives in the country, considering the different populations served by Brazilian public policies.Resumen: El objetivo de este artículo es problematizar la construcción histórica de las políticas públicas en Brasil, considerando su historicidad reciente y dos poblaciones específicas: la población callejera y la LGBT+. Entendemos que la historicidad y la cuestión de la población que hemos destacado nos brindan preguntas analíticas para pensar la gobernabilidad y las relaciones históricas establecidas entre el Estado brasileño y las vidas bajo su gobierno. Nos situaremos en el campo de la problematización que conjuga la construcción teórica y la lucha político-social de la militancia en la academia y en los movimientos sociales, a partir del control social y la producción científica. Destacamos cómo el desmantelamiento actual pone en riesgo a las poblaciones mencionadas, al mismo tiempo que también se refieren a cuestiones estructurales de las relaciones históricas entre el Estado y la vida en el país, considerando las diferentes poblaciones atendidas por las políticas públicas brasileñas.O objetivo deste artigo é problematizar a construção histórica das políticas públicas no país, considerando sua historicidade recente e duas populações específicas: a população de rua e a LGBT+. Genetic divergence in popcorn genotypes using microsatellites in bulk genomic DNA

The genetic diversity of 25 popcorn genotypes was estimated based on DNA bulks from 78 plants of eachvariety. The procedure involved 23 microsatellite loci distributed on 9 maize chromosomes. Clustering analysis according tothe Tocher method and the hierarchical clustering procedures (nearest neighbor, furthest neighbor and Unweighted Pair-Group Method Using Arithmetic Averages - UPGMA) were performed. The cophenetic correlation coefficients indicated theUPGMA method as adequate to distinguish the varieties. The clusters suggested by the molecular analysis generally groupedgenotypes with the same genealogy together. The genetic dissimilarity of the varieties Argentina, Chile, PA-091 and PR-023was higher than of the others. Therefore, higher heterozygosity is expected in progenies from crosses with the other genotypes

OISTRIBÜIÇÃO GEOGRÁFICA DE SEIS ESPÉCIES FLORESTAIS COMO SUBsíDIO PARA A ESCOLHA DE ÁREAS FUTURAS DE CONSERVAÇÃO "IN SITU"

As perdas de recursos fitogenéticos de valor econômico, social e científico, nos países tropicais, estão direta ou indiretamente relacionadas à ação antrópica. A literatura especializada recomenda estratégias que permitam conservar a diversidade genética de espéciesalvo. Dentre as listadas, optamos por trabalhar numa primeira aproximação com Astronium urundeuva, lIex paraguariensis, Ocotea pretiosa, Podocarpus lambertii, Schinopsis brasiliensis e Spondias tuberosa . Este trabalho restringiu-se ao exame da distribuição geográfica das espécies, como primeira etapa dos estudos que precedem a implementação da estratégia de conservação "in situ". Através de levantamentos em herbários e revisão de literatura foram obtidos os dados sobre os locais de ocorrência das espécies. As coordenadas geográficas desses locais foram migradas para um software de geoprocessamento (Arc-info) e plotadas em mapa na escala de 1:10.000.000. Para cada uma das espécies,tomou-se como parâmetro um raio de 20 km em torno dos pontosde ocorrência, prevendo a possibilidade de novas ocorrências. A partir desse parâmetro foram plotadas as respectivas manchas, delimitando-se as áreas objeto de estudos futuros

Guia curricular de saúde para o ensino de 1.º grau

There were presented the "Curricular Guide of Health for the First Grade School" which were oficially approved by Educational Department of S. Paulo State, Brazil, and which is to used for the First Grade School. There were emphasized the fundamental points which were used in the elaboration of the guide such as - the capacity of learning of the scholar; the situation of Education in Health in the context related to the Scholar Health; the bio-psycho-social view of Health - there were pointed out the general objectives which cover the education contents in four bascial items: Knowledge and development; Nutrition; Physical, Mental and Social Hygiene; Health damage. The content of each basical item is distributed for each year of the first grade school in order to cover specific objectives for each year.Apresenta-se o "Guia Curricular de Saúde para o Ensino do 1.° Grau" aprovado oficialmente pela Secretaria de Educação do Estado de São Paulo para ser utilizado nas Escolas de 1.° grau. Após salientar os pontos fundamentais que foram levados em conta na sua elaboração - capacidade de aprendizado do escolar; situação do ensino formalizado de Saúde dentro do conjunto que se relaciona com a Saúde do Escolar; visão bio-psico-social de Saúde - foram destacados os objetivos gerais do guia e englobados o conteúdo de ensino em quatro temas básicos: Crescimento e Desenvolvimento; Nutrição; Higiene Física, Mental e Social; Agravos à Saúde. O conteúdo de cada tema básico é, depois, distribuido por série escolar e, finalmente, detalhados os objetivos específicos para cada série
