    Maximum Entropy Inferences on the Axion Mass in Models with Axion-Neutrino Interaction

    In this work we use the Maximum Entropy Principle (MEP) to infer the mass of an axion which interacts to photons and neutrinos in an effective low energy theory. The Shannon entropy function to be maximized is suitably defined in terms of the axion branching ratios. We show that MEP strongly constrains the axion mass taking into account the current experimental bounds on the neutrinos masses. Assuming that the axion is massive enough to decay into all the three neutrinos and that MEP fixes all the free parameters of the model, the inferred axion mass is in the interval 0.1 0.1\ eV <mA<0.2\ <m_{A}<0.2 eV, which can be tested by forthcoming experiments such as IAXO. However, even in the case where MEP fixes just the axion mass and no other parameter, we found that 0.10.1 eV <mA<6.3< m_A < 6.3 eV in the DFSZ model with right-handed neutrinos. Moreover, a light axion, allowed to decay to photons and the lightest neutrino only, is determined by MEP as a viable dark matter candidate.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, typos corrected, figures update

    Inferences on the Higgs Boson and Axion Masses through a Maximum Entropy Principle

    The Maximum Entropy Principle (MEP) is a method that can be used to infer the value of an unknown quantity in a set of probability functions. In this work we review two applications of MEP: one giving a precise inference of the Higgs boson mass value; and the other one allowing to infer the mass of the axion. In particular, for the axion we assume that it has a decay channel into pairs of neutrinos, in addition to the decay into two photons.     Pollination ecology of the tropical weed Triumfetta semitriloba Jacq. ( tiliaceae), in the south- eastern Brazil

    This work aimed to study the pollination ecology of the tropical weed Triumfetta semitriloba Jacq. (Tiliaceae), in Viçosa, South-eastern Brazil, during the flowering season of 1993 and 1994. Two patches located in pasture (P1 and P2) and one patch in a forest trail (P3) were chosen and ten plants on each patch were sorted. The number of opened flowers were counted during one day, in each flowering month and patch. All observed flower visitors were identified and their behavior while visiting flowers was recorded. Frequency of visits to flowered branches was obtained and some pollinator individuals were captured for analysis of pollen load. Flowers are conspicuously yellow and actinomorphic, with five nectaries around the ovary base, and opened sequentially in the afternoon. Flower phenology followed a modified steady-state Gentry's pattern. The number of opened flowers was higher in P2, but differences between months were not homogeneous between patches. Considering behaviour when collecting pollen or nectar, which permitted impregnation of stigma with pollen, visiting frequency and percent of T. semitriloba pollen on pollen load (100% for all of them, except for Augochlorella michaelis which was 81%) the following species were the mainly pollinators: Augochloropsis cupreola, Augochlorella michaelis, Cressomiella aff. sussurans, Cressomiella sussurans, Cressomiella sp., Pseudocentron paulistana, Ceratinula sp1, Ceratinula sp2 and Ceratinula sp3, Melissodes sexcincta, Apis mellifera, Plebeia cf. nigriceps, Plebeia droryana. Frequency of pollinators visitation was not different between patches and not uniform during anthesis. There was a higher pollinator activity between 15:00 and 17:00 hr.Este trabalho tem por objetivo estudar a ecologia da polinização da planta invasora Triumfetta semitriloba Jacq. (Tiliaceae), em Viçosa, MG, Brasil, durante a estação de floração de 1993 e 1994. Foram escolhidas duas manchas de plantas localizadas em pastos abandonados (P1 e P2) e uma mancha em clareira de mata (P3). Dez plantas, em cada mancha, foram sorteadas. Durante um dia de cada mês de floração foi contado o número de flores abertas por planta. Todos os visitantes florais foram identificados e registrado o comportamento. Foi obtida a freqüência de visitas aos ramos floridos e alguns polinizadores foram coletados para análise da carga de pólen. As flores de T. semitriloba são actinomórficas com cinco nectários em torno da base do ovário, e abrem, seqüencialmente, no período da tarde. A fenologia floral seguiu o padrão "steady-state" modificado de Gentry. O número de flores abertas foi maior em P2, mas as diferenças entre meses não foram homogêneas entre as manchas. Considerando o comportamento enquanto coletavam pólen ou néctar, a freqüência de visita e a porcentagem de pólen de T. semitriloba na carga polínica (100% para todas as espécies de abelhas, exceto para Augochlorella michaelis que foi igual a 81%) as seguintes abelhas foram consideradas como principais polinizadoras: Augochloropsis cupreola, Augochlorella michaelis, Cressomiella aff. sussurans, Cressomiella sussurans, Cressomiella sp., Pseudocentron paulistana, Ceratinula sp1, Ceratinula sp2 e Ceratinula sp3, Melissodes sexcincta, Apis mellifera, Plebeia cf. nigriceps, Plebeia droryana.     Same-Sign Taus Signatures of Maximally Flavor-Violating Scalars at the LHC

    We explore single and double flavor-violating scalars (flavons) production at the 13 and 14 TeV LHC in an effective field theory formulation where flavons always change the flavor of Standard Model fermions. When those scalars couple to mass, their flavor-changing couplings to top quarks and tau leptons are favored. Focusing on the mass region below the top quark mass, we find couplings that fit the muon and electron (g−2)(g-2) discrepancies and avoid several current experimental constraints. We determine the potential of the LHC to exclude or discover such a new physics scenario with clean signatures consisting of same-sign tau leptons and the simultaneous observation of resonances in the tau plus electron or muon invariant mass. We found that in the double production mode, effective couplings down to order 10−210^{-2} TeV−1^{-1} can be probed for flavon masses in the 10-170 GeV range at the HL-LHC at 14 TeV, but couplings down to 0.1 TeV−1^{-1} can be excluded at 95\% confidence level with data collected by the 13 TeV LHC in the same mass interval.Comment: 32 pages, 12 figures, 2 table

    Resíduo desidratado de vitivinícolas do Vale do São Francisco associado a diferentes fontes energéticas na alimentação de ovinos: desempenho animal.

    Objetivou-se com a realização deste trabalho avaliar o ganho de peso e conversão alimentar em ovinos confinados recebendo dietas contendo resíduo de vitivinícolas associado a diferentes fontes energéticas. Foram utilizados 18 ovinos sem padrão racial definido, não castrados, com peso médio de 23 kg e oito meses de idade. O período experimental constou de 63 dias, sendo as dietas compostas de 50% de resíduo de vitivinícolas e 50% de concentrados energéticos: grão de milho moído (Zea mays), raspa de mandioca (Manihot esculenta) enriquecida com 1,8% de uréia e farelo de palma forrageira (Opuntia ficus) enriquecido com 1,1% de uréia. Para determinação do ganho de peso os animais foram pesados no início do experimento e a cada sete dias e, para coversão alimentar foi feita a relação entre o consumo de matéria seca e ganho de peso total num período de 63 dias. Os ganhos de peso médio diários foram de 117, 71 e 132g; a conversão alimentar 9,50, 13,28 e 11,30, respectivamente para as combinações resíduo e grão de milho moído, raspa de mandioca e farelo de palma. As médias diárias de ganho de peso vivo obtido pelos ovinos ao longo do período de engorda revelaram um bom potencial forrageiro do resíduo de vitivinícolas combinado as diferentes fontes energéticas

    Contact dynamics in a gently vibrated granular pile

    We use multi-speckle diffusive wave spectroscopy (MSDWS) to probe the micron-scale dynamics of a granular pile submitted to discrete gentle taps. The typical time-scale between plastic events is found to increase dramatically with the number of applied taps. Furthermore, this microscopic dynamics weakly depends on the solid fraction of the sample. This process is strongly analogous to the aging phenomenon observed in thermal glassy systems. We propose a heuristic model where this slowing down mechanism is associated with a slow evolution of the distribution of the contact forces between particles.     Enterotype May Drive the Dietary-Associated Cardiometabolic Risk Factors

    Analyses of typical bacterial clusters in humans named enterotypes may facilitate understanding the host differences in the cardiometabolic profile. It stills unknown whether the three previously described enterotypes were present in populations living below the equator. We examined how the identification of enterotypes could be useful to explain the dietary associations with cardiometabolic risk factors in Brazilian subjects. In this cross-sectional study, a convenience sample of 268 adults (54.2% women) reported their dietary habits and had clinical and biological samples collected. In this study, we analyzed biochemical data and metagenomics of fecal microbiota (16SrRNA sequencing, V4 region). Continuous variables were compared using ANOVA, and categorical variables using chi-square test. Vsearch clustered the operational taxonomic units, and Silva Database provided the taxonomic signatures. Spearman coefficient was used to verify the correlation between bacteria abundances within each enterotype. One hundred subjects were classified as omnivore, 102 lacto-ovo-vegetarians, and 66 strict vegetarians. We found the same structure as the three previously described enterotypes: 111 participants were assigned to Bacteroides, 55 to Prevotella, and 102 to Ruminococcaceae enterotype. The Prevotella cluster contained higher amount of strict vegetarians individuals than the other enterotypes (40.0 vs. 20.7 and 20.6, p = 0.04). Subjects in this enterotype had a similar anthropometric profile but a lower mean LDL-c concentration than the Bacteroides enterotype (96 +/- 23 vs. 109 +/- 32 mg/dL, p = 0.04). We observed significant correlations between bacterial abundances and cardiometabolic risk factors, but coefficients differed depending on the enterotype. In Prevotella enterotype, Eubacterium ventriosum (r BMI = -0.33, p = 0.03, and r HDL-c = 0.33, p = 0.04), Akkermansia (r 2h glucose = -0.35, p = 0.02), Roseburia (r BMI = -0.36, p = 0.02 and r waist = -0.36, p = 0.02), and Faecalibacterium (r insulin = -0.35, p = 0.02) abundances were associated to better cardiometabolic profile. The three enterotypes previously described are present in Brazilians, supporting that those bacterial clusters are not population-specific. Diet-independent lower LDL-c levels in subjects from Prevotella than in other enterotypes suggest that a protective bacterial cluster in the former should be driving this association. Enterotypes seem to be useful to understand the impact of daily diet exposure on cardiometabolic risk factors.     Susceptibility of Mice to Trypanosoma evansi Treated with Human Plasma Containing Different Concentrations of Apolipoprotein L-1

    The aim of this study was to test the susceptibility of mice to Trypanosoma evansi treated with human plasma containing different concentrations of apolipoprotein L-1 (APOL1). For this experiment, a strain of T. evansi and human plasma (plasmas 1, 2, and 3) from 3 adult males clinically healthy were used. In vivo test used 50 mice divided in 5 groups (A to E) with 10 animals in each group. Animals of groups B to E were infected, and then treated with 0.2 ml of human plasma in the following outline: negative control (A), positive control (B), treatment with plasma 1 (C), treatment with plasma 2 (D), and treatment with plasma 3 (E). Mice treated with human plasma showed an increase in longevity of 40.9±0.3 (C), 20±9.0 (D) and 35.6±9.3 (E) days compared to the control group (B) which was 4.3±0.5 days. The number of surviving mice and free of the parasite (blood smear and PCR negative) at the end of the experiment was 90%, 0%, and 60% for groups C, D, and E, respectively. The quantification of APOL1 was performed due to the large difference in the treatments that differed in the source plasma. In plasmas 1, 2, and 3 was detected the concentration of 194, 99, and 115 mg/dl of APOL1, respectively. However, we believe that this difference in the treatment efficiency is related to the level of APOL1 in plasmas
