The Importance of Education for the Relationship between Economic Integration and Female Labor Market Outcomes: A Developing Country Analysis
Women in developing countries have been and are still suffering from various disadvantages on the labor market. We use a fixed effects model with a hierarchical structure to assess the empirical relationship between economic integration, measured by trade, exports and imports, and the female labor force participation rate (FLFPR). The relationship between economic integration and the female employment shares in the agriculture, industry and service sector is also analyzed. Additionally, this investigation is extended by looking at how these relationships are affected by the level of various measures of female education. The research is conducted for 87 developing countries between the years 1980 and 2010. Contrary to most previous research that has used aggregate country-level data for FLFPR, the hierarchical structure of our model allows our data to vary across time, countries as well as age-cohorts. The results show that trade has a positive effect on FLFPR but this effect only appears when average years of education for women is included together with trade as an interaction term in our regression analysis. When disaggregating trade into exports and imports, these measures of economic integration have a significant effect on FLFPR. Likewise there is an effect of export and imports when different measures of education are included as part in the interaction term, indicating the importance of female education for the relationship. While exports have a positive effect, imports have a negative effect on FLFPR. For the female employment shares an effect of trade as well as exports and imports can be seen in some cases, mostly when education is part of the regressions in the interaction term
3D architecture of cyclic-step and antidune deposits in glacigenic subaqueous fan and delta settings: Integrating outcrop and ground-penetrating radar data
Bedforms related to supercritical flows are increasingly recognised as important constituents of many depositional environments, but outcrop studies are commonly hampered by long bedform wavelengths and complex three-dimensional geometries. We combined outcrop-based facies analysis with ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys to analyse the 3D facies architecture of subaqueous ice-contact fan and glacifluvial delta deposits. The studied sedimentary systems were deposited at the margins of the Middle Pleistocene Scandinavian ice sheets in Northern Germany.
Glacifluvial Gilbert-type deltas are characterised by steeply dipping foreset beds, comprising cyclic-step deposits, which alternate with antidune deposits. Deposits of cyclic steps consist of lenticular scours infilled by backset cross-stratified pebbly sand and gravel. The GPR sections show that the scour fills form trains along the delta foresets, which can locally be traced for up to 15 m. Perpendicular and oblique to palaeoflow direction, these deposits appear as troughs with concentric or low-angle cross-stratified infills. Downflow transitions from scour fills into sheet-like low-angle cross-stratified or sinusoidally stratified pebbly sand, deposited by antidunes, are common. Cyclic steps and antidunes were deposited by sustained and surge-type supercritical density flows, which were related to hyperpycnal flows, triggered by major meltwater discharge or slope-failure events.
Subaqueous ice-contact fan deposits include deposits of progradational scour fills, isolated hydraulic jumps, antidunes and (humpback) dunes. The gravel-rich fan succession consists of vertical stacks of laterally amalgamated pseudo-sheets, indicating deposition by pulses of waning supercritical flows under high aggradation rates. The GPR sections reveal the large-scale architecture of the sand-rich fan succession, which is characterised by lobe elements with basal erosional surfaces associated with scours filled with backsets related to hydraulic jumps, passing upwards and downflow into deposits of antidunes and (humpback) dunes. The recurrent facies architecture of the lobe elements and their prograding and retrograding stacking pattern are interpreted as related to autogenic flow morphodynamics

Mapping Cosmic Dawn and Reionization: Challenges and Synergies
Cosmic dawn and the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) are among the least explored
observational eras in cosmology: a time at which the first galaxies and
supermassive black holes formed and reionized the cold, neutral Universe of the
post-recombination era. With current instruments, only a handful of the
brightest galaxies and quasars from that time are detectable as individual
objects, due to their extreme distances. Fortunately, a multitude of
multi-wavelength intensity mapping measurements, ranging from the redshifted 21
cm background in the radio to the unresolved X-ray background, contain a
plethora of synergistic information about this elusive era. The coming decade
will likely see direct detections of inhomogenous reionization with CMB and 21
cm observations, and a slew of other probes covering overlapping areas and
complementary physical processes will provide crucial additional information
and cross-validation. To maximize scientific discovery and return on
investment, coordinated survey planning and joint data analysis should be a
high priority, closely coupled to computational models and theoretical
predictions.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey Science

Cosmology with the Highly Redshifted 21cm Line
In addition to being a probe of Cosmic Dawn and Epoch of Reionization
astrophysics, the 21cm line at is also a powerful way to constrain
cosmology. Its power derives from several unique capabilities. First, the 21cm
line is sensitive to energy injections into the intergalactic medium at high
redshifts. It also increases the number of measurable modes compared to
existing cosmological probes by orders of magnitude. Many of these modes are on
smaller scales than are accessible via the CMB, and moreover have the advantage
of being firmly in the linear regime (making them easy to model theoretically).
Finally, the 21cm line provides access to redshifts prior to the formation of
luminous objects. Together, these features of 21cm cosmology at provide
multiple pathways toward precise cosmological constraints. These include the
"marginalizing out" of astrophysical effects, the utilization of redshift space
distortions, the breaking of CMB degeneracies, the identification of signatures
of relative velocities between baryons and dark matter, and the discovery of
unexpected signs of physics beyond the CDM paradigm at high redshifts.Comment: Science white paper submitted to Decadal 2020 surve
