Critical review of Ames Life Science participation in Spacelab Mission Development Test 3: The SMD 3 management study

    Get PDF
A management study was conducted to specify activities and problems encountered during the development of procedures for documentation and crew training on experiments, as well as during the design, integration, and delivery of a life sciences experiment payload to Johnson Space Center for a 7 day simulation of a Spacelab mission. Conclusions and recommendations to project management for current and future Ames' life sciences projects are included. Broader issues relevant to the conduct of future scientific missions under the constraints imposed by the environment of space are also addressed

A management study was initiated by ARC (Ames Research Center) to specify Spacelab Mission Development Test 3 activities and problems. This report documents the problems encountered and provides conclusions and recommendations to project management for current and future ARC life sciences projects. An executive summary of the conclusions and recommendations is provided. The report also addresses broader issues relevant to the conduct of future scientific missions under the constraints imposed by the space environment

Form factor for large quantum graphs: evaluating orbits with time-reversal

It has been shown that for a certain special type of quantum graphs the random-matrix form factor can be recovered to at least third order in the scaled time \tau using periodic-orbit theory. Two types of contributing pairs of orbits were identified, those which require time-reversal symmetry and those which do not. We present a new technique of dealing with contribution from the former type of orbits. The technique allows us to derive the third order term of the expansion for general graphs. Although the derivation is rather technical, the advantages of the technique are obvious: it makes the derivation tractable, it identifies explicitly the orbit configurations which give the correct contribution, it is more algorithmical and more system-independent, making possible future applications of the technique to systems other than quantum graphs.Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures, accepted to Waves in Random Media (special issue on Quantum Graphs and their Applications). Planning and managing future space facility projects

    Get PDF
To learn how ground-based personnel of a space project plan and organize their work and how such planning and organizing relate to work outcomes, longitudinal study of the management and execution of the Space Lab Mission Development Test 3 (SMD 3) was performed at NASA Ames Research Center. A view of the problems likely to arise in organizations and some methods of coping with these problems are presented as well as the conclusions and recommendations that pertain strictly to SMD 3 management. Emphasis is placed on the broader context of future space facility projects and additional problems that may be anticipated. A model of management that may be used to facilitate problem solving and communication - management by objectives (MBO) is presented. Some problems of communication and emotion management that MBO does not address directly are considered. Models for promoting mature, constructive and satisfying emotional relationships among group members are discussed

On the Form Factor for the Unitary Group

We study the combinatorics of the contributions to the form factor of the group U(N) in the large NN limit. This relates to questions about semiclassical contributions to the form factor of quantum systems described by the unitary ensemble.Comment: 35 page

The Scintillation Velocity of the Relativistic Binary Pulsar PSR J1141-6545

We report a dramatic orbital modulation in the scintillation timescale of the relativistic binary pulsar J1141--6545 that both confirms the validity of the scintillation speed methodology and enables us to derive important physical parameters. We have determined the space velocity, the orbital inclination and even the longitude of periastron of the binary system, which we find to be in good agreement with that obtained from pulse timing measurements. Our data permit two equally-significant physical interpretations of the system. The system is either an edge-on binary with a high space velocity (115\sim 115 km s1^{-1}) or is more face-on with a much slower velocity (45\sim 45 km s1^{-1}). We favor the former, as it is more consistent with pulse timing and the distribution of known neutron star masses. Under this assumption, the runaway velocity of 115 km s1^{-1} is much greater than is expected if pulsars do not receive a natal kick at birth. The derived inclination of the binary system is (76\pm 2.5^{\circ}) degrees, implying a companion mass of 1.01 (\pm )~0.02 M(_{\odot}) and a pulsar mass of 1.29 (\pm)~0.02 M(_{\odot}). Our derived physical parameters indicate that this pulsar should prove to be an excellent laboratory for tests of gravitational wave emission.Comment: Minor text and figure changes and corrections following referee's Comments. 14 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

Dynamics of Simple Balancing Models with State Dependent Switching Control

Time-delayed control in a balancing problem may be a nonsmooth function for a variety of reasons. In this paper we study a simple model of the control of an inverted pendulum by either a connected movable cart or an applied torque for which the control is turned off when the pendulum is located within certain regions of phase space. Without applying a small angle approximation for deviations about the vertical position, we see structurally stable periodic orbits which may be attracting or repelling. Due to the nonsmooth nature of the control, these periodic orbits are born in various discontinuity-induced bifurcations. Also we show that a coincidence of switching events can produce complicated periodic and aperiodic solutions.Comment: 36 pages, 12 figure

Semiclassical expansion of parametric correlation functions of the quantum time delay

We derive semiclassical periodic orbit expansions for a correlation function of the Wigner time delay. We consider the Fourier transform of the two-point correlation function, the form factor K(τ,x,y,M)K(\tau,x,y,M), that depends on the number of open channels MM, a non-symmetry breaking parameter xx, and a symmetry breaking parameter yy. Several terms in the Taylor expansion about τ=0\tau=0, which depend on all parameters, are shown to be identical to those obtained from Random Matrix Theory.Comment: 21 pages, no figure

Experimental Test of a Trace Formula for a Chaotic Three Dimensional Microwave Cavity

We have measured resonance spectra in a superconducting microwave cavity with the shape of a three-dimensional generalized Bunimovich stadium billiard and analyzed their spectral fluctuation properties. The experimental length spectrum exhibits contributions from periodic orbits of non-generic modes and from unstable periodic orbit of the underlying classical system. It is well reproduced by our theoretical calculations based on the trace formula derived by Balian and Duplantier for chaotic electromagnetic cavities.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures (reduced quality
