    A Review of Functional Safety Models for Public Safety Management Systems

    This paper reviews various models used for enterprise process management systems and public safety systems. These models include probabilistic functional safety models, accident models such as causal-sequential event-based models, systemic models such as failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), reliability models, systemic models such as systems-theoretic accident model and processes (STAMP) model and cognitive models, among others. These models, along with their advantages and disadvantages, are discussed in detail. Existing public safety management systems and enterprise process management systems are also compared. Functionally safe communication systems for public safety, including those using wireless telecommunications such as LTE for Public Safety, are also discussed. In addition, this paper also explains some of the evolving legislation regarding managed energy and managed safety for both process and public management systems

    Phonon runaway in nanotube quantum dots

    We explore electronic transport in a nanotube quantum dot strongly coupled with vibrations and weakly with leads and the thermal environment. We show that the recent observation of anomalous conductance signatures in single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) quantum dots can be understood quantitatively in terms of current driven `hot phonons' that are strongly correlated with electrons. Using rate equations in the many-body configuration space for the joint electron-phonon distribution, we argue that the variations are indicative of strong electron-phonon coupling requiring an analysis beyond the traditional uncorrelated phonon-assisted transport (Tien-Gordon) approach.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    Literacy for Life: Evaluating the National Literacy Trust’s bespoke programme for schools

    This paper presents an evaluation of ‘Literacy for Life’ (LfL) – a whole-school literacy programme, implemented in five secondary schools in England. The aims of LfL were to improve literacy attainment and to promote positive attitudes to reading and writing. However, when compared to other schools, there is little or no evidence that being in a LfL school, had any differential benefit for pupils’ attainment. In LfL schools, the gap for disadvantaged pupils and those with SEN grew in the early years of the intervention. There is also no evidence from repeated surveys that pupils’ attitudes to and enjoyment of reading showed any improvement. As such, LfL did not achieve its intended objectives. This matters because, despite limited evidence in its favour, schools continue to use it and programmes similar to it. We argue that programmes such as LfL, which are implemented on a whole-school level, need to be based upon evidence-informed approaches

    Mortality in Sepsis and its relationship with Gender.

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Sepsis remains a leading cause of death across the world, carrying a mortality rate of 20-50%. Women have been reported to be less likely to suffer from sepsis and to have a lower risk of mortality from sepsis compared to men. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between gender and mortality in sepsis, and compare cytokine profiles of male and female patients. METHODS: This was a prospective case series on 97 patients admitted with sepsis. Clinical and microbiological data was gathered, blood samples were collected for cytokine (IL-10, IL-6 and TNFα) levels and patients were followed up for clinical outcome. RESULTS: There were 54% males and 46% females, with no significant difference of age or comorbids between genders. Respiratory tract infection was the commonest source of sepsis, and was more common in females (60%) compared to males (39%) (p=0.034). Males had a higher mortality (p=0.048, RR 1.73) and plasma IL-6 level(p=0.040) compared to females. Mean IL-6 plasma level was significantly (p\u3c0.01) higher in patients who died vs. who recovered. CONCLUSION: Our study shows that males with sepsis have a 70% greater mortality rate, and mortality is associated with a higher IL-6 plasma level

    Non-Invasive Driver Drowsiness Detection System.

    Drowsiness when in command of a vehicle leads to a decline in cognitive performance that affects driver behavior, potentially causing accidents. Drowsiness-related road accidents lead to severe trauma, economic consequences, impact on others, physical injury and/or even death. Real-time and accurate driver drowsiness detection and warnings systems are necessary schemes to reduce tiredness-related driving accident rates. The research presented here aims at the classification of drowsy and non-drowsy driver states based on respiration rate detection by non-invasive, non-touch, impulsive radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar. Chest movements of 40 subjects were acquired for 5 m using a lab-placed IR-UWB radar system, and respiration per minute was extracted from the resulting signals. A structured dataset was obtained comprising respiration per minute, age and label (drowsy/non-drowsy). Different machine learning models, namely, Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, Logistic regression, Gradient Boosting Machine, Extra Tree Classifier and Multilayer Perceptron were trained on the dataset, amongst which the Support Vector Machine shows the best accuracy of 87%. This research provides a ground truth for verification and assessment of UWB to be used effectively for driver drowsiness detection based on respiration

Our project (GO-tickets) is more easy way to book /buy ticket for all categories of events which is held in our town which includes the movie, festivals, holiday tour, events, sports and much more. This project is based on Cloud computing and we implement the digitalized concept of ticket marketing in which person can buy tickets in digital form and use single platform for all types of events booking. We used angular JS, ionic for a front end and node.js, express.js for a back end and mongo DB for a database. Our application works on both OS platform (IOS and android).Our proposed system is totally softcopy and in digitalized. The project has been successfully in the developing process and the system performance is found satisfactory. The use of computers in this technology era is nonproductive tasks to helps the users to reduce the time and wait. User-friendly menu interface the users can then use the services of the application via to fill a registration form can register themselves for book the tickets. This research paper of Go-Ticket application deals with the modern technology development of mobile phone application which is more simple effective, easy way to use and we also introduce QR scanning bar code reader that contain information about ticket in the form of bar-code. Moreover, the authentication of the ticket is checking by another person through QR scanning bar code reader which verify, QR-code detail information with the database and reduces the burden of event manager
