    Peritumoral cystic meningioma

    A case of 39 years old male is described who presented with headache, right-sided focal fits and decreased power in the right hand. CT scan brain showed a left fronto-parietal cystic lesion with centrolateral intramural nodule with homogenous enhancement. At surgery, the extra-axial lesion with cyst containing xanthochromic fluid had a well-defined capsule that could easily be separated from the peri-lesional cortical surface. The dural-based nodule with its cyst wall was resected in toto. The histopathology of mural nodule was reported as meningioma while the cyst wall histology revealed meningothelial cells

    Is COVID-19 impacting cancer screening in Pakistan? An observational study of cancer screening test requests during the pandemic

    Background: The purpose of this study is to assess how the COVID-19 pandemic affected cancer screening at a large tertiary care setting in the city of Karachi, the third largest city in the world, and to identify if there has been any decrease in cancer screening during the ongoing pandemic.Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted at the clinical chemistry laboratory at the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), Karachi Pakistan. Data for test volumes was extracted from the Integrated Laboratory Management System (ILMS) for the following tumor markers: CA19 Carbohydrate Antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9), Calcitonin, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), from 2017 to 2020. Data from January 1st, 2017 till December 31st, 2019 was recorded and compared with the test volume data from January 1st, 2020 till December 31st, 2020. Number of tests performed in the prior 3 years were compared with tests performed in 2020, specifically looking at changes during the lockdown period in 2020 (1st March - 9 th April) and compared with the same period in preceding years.Results: During the four-year period, a total of 6,530 tests were performed for CA19-9, 893 for Calcitonin, and 54,769 for PSA. Year 2019 recorded the highest volume for all 3 tests with test volumes increasing continuously from 2017 to 2019. Number of tests performed decreased throughout the year 2020 for Calcitonin and PSA, whereas volume of tests for CA19-9 only reduced during the lockdown period while increased in the non-lockdown period as compared to previous years. Highest percent decline during the 2020 lockdown period was seen for Calcitonin (-62.5%), followed by PSA (-51.8%) and CA19-9 (-19%).Conclusion: In conclusion, the amount of CA19-9, Calcitonin, and PSA tests performed in Karachi, Pakistan has drastically reduced due to the lockdown that was mandated due to the COVID-19 outbreak. It is crucial that despite an imposed lockdown, regular cancer screening must continue

    Burn injury characteristics: findings from Pakistan national emergency department surveillance study

    Background: Burn injury is an important yet under-researched area in Pakistan. The objective of this study was to determine the characteristics and associated outcomes of burn injury patients presenting to major emergency departments in Pakistan. Methods: Pakistan National Emergency Department Surveillance (Pak-NEDS) was a pilot active surveillance conducted between November 2010 and March 2011. Information related to patient demographics, mode of arrival, cause of burn injury, and outcomes was analyzed for this paper. Data were entered using Epi Info and analyzed using SPSS v.20. Ethical approval was obtained from all participating sites. Results: There were 403 burn injury patients in Pak-NEDS, with a male to female ratio 2:1. About 48.9% of the burn injury patients (n = 199) were between 10 - 29 years of age. There was no statistically significant difference between unintentional and intentional burn injury patients except for body part injured (p-value 0.004) and ED disposition (p-value 0.025). Among 21 patients who died, most were between 40 - 49 years of age (61.9%) and suffered from fire burns (81%). Conclusion: Burn injuries are a burden on emergency rooms in Pakistan. We were able to demonstrate the significant burden of burn injuries that is not addressed by specialized burn centers

    Molecular characterization and functional analysis of cytochrome P450-mediated detoxification CYP302A1 gene involved in host plant adaptation in Spodoptera frugieprda

    The fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda is a destructive and polyphagous pest of many essential food crops including maize and rice. The FAW is hard to manage, control, or eradicate, due to its polyphagous nature and voracity of feeding. Here, we report the characterization and functional analysis of the detoxification gene CYP302A1 and how S. frugieprda larvae use a detoxification mechanism to adapt host plants. Results demonstrated that CYP302A1 expression levels were much higher in midgut tissue and the older S. frugiperda larvae. Our current studies revealed the enhanced P450 activity in the midguts of S. frugiperda larvae after exposure to rice plants as compared to corn plants and an artificial diet. Furthermore, higher mortality was observed in PBO treated larvae followed by the exposure of rice plants as compared to the corn plant. The dsRNA-fed larvae showed downregulation of CYP302A1 gene in the midgut. At the same time, higher mortality, reduced larval weight and shorter developmental time was observed in the dsRNA-fed larvae followed by the exposure of rice plant as compared to the corn plant and DEPC-water treated plants as a control. These results concluded that the inducible P450 enzyme system and related genes could provide herbivores with an ecological opportunity to adapt to diverse host plants by utilizing secondary compounds present in their host plants

    Ecotoxicological impacts associated with the interplay between micro(nano)plastics and pesticides in aquatic and terrestrial environments

    Microplastics (size 1 μm–5 mm) and nanoplastics (size 1–1000 nm), commonly referred to as micro(nano)plastics (MNPs), are ubiquitously present in aquatic and terrestrial environments, where they imminently interact with persistent organic pollutants, such as pesticides, inducing adverse toxicological effects in exposed organisms. MNPs interact with pesticides through adsorption and desorption processes, which require additional consideration due to the prospective role this nexus plays in changing the environmental transportation, fate, bioavailability, and ecotoxicity of both plastic particles and pesticides. Therefore, this review summarizes studies on the adsorption of pesticides on MNPs and factors affecting that adsorption process, including MNP properties (particle size, surface area, shape, dose), characteristics of pesticides (ionic properties, hydrophobicity), and environmental factors (temperature, pH, ionic strength). Furthermore, the bioaccumulation and associated combined toxicological impacts of pesticides and MNPs in freshwater, marine water, and terrestrial organisms are highlighted. Reviewed studies revealed that MNPs and pesticides undergo bioaccumulation in aquatic and terrestrial organisms and can cause multifaceted impacts, including growth and reproduction impairments, oxidative stress, altered genetic and enzymatic responses, metabolism abnormalities, multigenerational effects, histopathological modifications, neurotoxicity, and hepatotoxicity, among others. Last but not least, research gaps and future perspectives for pesticide and MNP interactions and their interconnected ecological implications are offered

    Aeroelastic tailoring for aerospace applications

    This study presents a brief account of the seminal works on aeroelastic tailoring for aerospace applications. Tailoring using advanced composites is a revolutionary process in the ever-evolving realm of aerospace design. The rapid growth in scientific knowledge and research necessitates the consolidation of the latest research and technological advancements every few years. The current work is part of this process. The major portion of the study covers the latest developments and state-of-the-art research in this century, with a special focus on the last ten years. However, a brief account of the historical background, the theoretical foundation, and a few seminal works from the later part of the previous century and the early part of this century have also been included to form a comprehensive starting point for new researchers entering the field of aeroelastic tailoring and to assist them in identifying the directions of their future endeavours. A critical evaluation of different research contributions, including their advantages, limitations, and prospects for future work, has been presented. Emphasis has been laid on flutter mitigation and aeroelastic optimization for passive aeroelastic control. New material and structural technologies (like curvilinear fibres, tow steering, functional grading, thickness distributions, selective reinforcing, additive manufacturing, and unconventional structural configurations), and novel tailoring optimization techniques (like lamination parameters, blending constraints, active aeroelastic wing design, shape functions, surrogate modelling, reduced order modelling, uncertainty quantification, matrix perturbation theory, modal-strain-energy analyses, and multiple indigenous optimization algorithms) have been identified as active research areas and prospective enabling tools for future work. The challenges faced in the full-scale employment of aeroelastic tailoring include quick, robust, and cost-effective optimization to cater for all design variables and constraints, experimental validation of new methodologies, certification of new material and structural configurations through relevant bodies and standards and gaining the confidence of industrialists for investment in technologies with a few highly focused areas of applications

    DNA barcoding of aphid-associated ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) in a subtropical area of southern China

    As one of the most abundant and complex groups of terrestrial insects, ants have associations with many other organismal groups, such as hemipteran insects producing honeydew. With the aim of expanding the knowledge base of ant species associated with aphids, this study analyzed mitochondrial COI barcodes of 301 ant samples for 37 aphid-associated ant species in a subtropical area of southern China. Sequence analyses revealed that the intraspecific and interspecific distances ranged from zero to 7.7%% and 0.2 to 31.7%, respectively. Three barcoding approaches – Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery, Bayesian Poisson Tree Processes and Generalized Mixed Yule-coalescent – were used to help delimit ant species based on COI sequences, and their results corresponded well with most of the morphospecies. All three approaches indicate cryptic diversity may exist within Tetramorium bicarinatum and Technomyrmex albipes, with intraspecific genetic distances of 7.7% and 6.24%, respectively. Our analyses also reported five species for the first time from Fujian Province of China, and the COI sequences of nine species are newly added into the GenBank. This study provides information about species diversity of aphid-associated ants in subtropical China and compiles a DNA barcode reference library for future ant barcoding work
