    On the subalgebra lattice of a Leibniz algebra

    In this paper, we begin to study the subalgebra lattice of a Leibniz algebra. In particular, we deal with Leibniz algebras whose subalgebra lattice is modular, upper semi-modular, lower semi-modular, distributive, or dually atomistic. The fact that a non-Lie Leibniz algebra has fewer one-dimensional subalgebras in general results in a number of lattice conditions being weaker than in the Lie case

    Leveraging Kernelized Synergies on Shared Subspace for Precision Grasping and Dexterous Manipulation

    Manipulation in contrast to grasping is a trajectorial task that needs to use dexterous hands. Improving the dexterity of robot hands, increases the controller complexity and thus requires to use the concept of postural synergies. Inspired from postural synergies, this research proposes a new framework called kernelized synergies that focuses on the re-usability of same subspace for precision grasping and dexterous manipulation. In this work, the computed subspace of postural synergies is parameterized by kernelized movement primitives to preserve its grasping and manipulation characteristics and allows its reuse for new objects. The grasp stability of proposed framework is assessed with the force closure quality index, as a cost function. For performance evaluation, the proposed framework is initially tested on two different simulated robot hand models using the Syngrasp toolbox and experimentally, four complex grasping and manipulation tasks are performed and reported. Results confirm the hand agnostic approach of proposed framework and its generalization to distinct objects irrespective of their dimensions

    Mitochondria, Cognitive Impairment, and Alzheimer's Disease

    To date, the beta amyloid (Aβ) cascade hypothesis remains the main pathogenetic model of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but its role in the majority of sporadic AD cases is unclear. The “mitochondrial cascade hypothesis” could explain many of the biochemical, genetic, and pathological features of sporadic AD. Somatic mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) could cause energy failure, increased oxidative stress, and accumulation of Aβ, which in a vicious cycle reinforce the mtDNA damage and the oxidative stress. Despite the evidence of mitochondrial dysfunction in AD, no causative mutations in the mtDNA have been detected so far. Indeed, results of studies on the role of mtDNA haplogroups in AD are controversial.     Calibration of tactile/force sensors for grasping with the PRISMA Hand II

    The PRISMA Hand II is a mechanically robust anthropomorphic hand developed at PRISMA Lab, University of Naples Federico II. The hand is highly underactuated, three motors drive 19 joints via elastic tendons. Thanks to its particular mechanical design, the hand can perform not only adaptive grasps but also in-hand manipulation. Each fingertip integrates a tactile/force sensor, based on optoelectronic technology, to provide tactile/force feedback during grasping and manipulation, particularly useful with deformable objects. The paper briefly describes the mechanical design and sensor technology of the hand and proposes a calibration procedure for tactile/force sensors. A comparison between different models of Neural Networks architectures, suitable for sensors calibration, is shown. Experimental tests are provided to choose the optimal tactile sensing suite. Finally, experiments for the regulation of the forces are made to show the effectiveness of calibrated sensors

    Microscopic approach to pion-nucleus dynamics

    Elastic scattering of pions from finite nuclei is investigated utilizing a contemporary, momentum--space first--order optical potential combined with microscopic estimates of second--order corrections. The calculation of the first--order potential includes:\ \ (1)~full Fermi--averaging integration including both the delta propagation and the intrinsic nonlocalities in the π\pi-NN amplitude, (2)~fully covariant kinematics, (3)~use of invariant amplitudes which do not contain kinematic singularities, and (4)~a finite--range off--shell pion--nucleon model which contains the nucleon pole term. The effect of the delta--nucleus interaction is included via the mean spectral--energy approximation. It is demonstrated that this produces a convergent perturbation theory in which the Pauli corrections (here treated as a second--order term) cancel remarkably against the pion true absorption terms. Parameter--free results, including the delta--nucleus shell--model potential, Pauli corrections, pion true absorption, and short--range correlations are presented.     A puzzling Mule Coin from the Parabita Hoard: a Material Characterisation

    In this research, we report on the compositional, microstructural and crystallographic properties of a lead coin which has been regarded for many years as a genuine silver coin minted in the Southern Italy in the course of the 4th century BC. The material characterisation of this object allowed detecting an ancient forging technology, not previously reported, which was meant for the silvering of lead substrates The data collected have disclosed a contemporary counterfeiting procedure based on a metal coating process onto a Pb substrate. This coating has been identified as a bi-layer with a Cu innermost and an Ag outermost visible layer. As far as the coating application technique is concerned, the gathered evidence has clearly indicated that the original appearance of this artifact cannot be explained in terms of any of the established methods for the growth of an artificially silvered coating in classical antiquity. This technology is now being explained in terms of modern, fully non destructive scientific methods.Comment: 9 pages including 8 figures.
