Dynamic Co-Existence of Company-Owned and Franchised Outlets Within a Company: A Framework of the Franchisor\u27s Perspective

    Get PDF
Why and how do company-owned and franchised outlets simultaneously exist within the same organization? The purpose of this article is to integrate a variety of theories on this interesting retail phenomenon into a broader theoretical framework based on the political-economy paradigm. This paper attempts to integrate the perspectives of several theories that previously have been considered competing models of a single reality--the access-to-capital viewpoint, transaction cost analysis, the population ecology perspective, and power-dependence-conflict arguments--into a broader perspective that utilizes intra-firmfactors and the internal and external economies and polities of the political-economy paradigm. A model depicting this integration is set forth and nineteen research propositions stemming from this model are proposed

Shifting Gears: Planning and Processing of a Large Gift Serials Collection

Mitchell Memorial Library recently received a sizable donation of gift journals and serials from the libraries of several agencies: Mississippi Geological Economic and Topographical Survey, Bureau of Geology in Jackson, Mississippi, and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). The impetus for the donations was the imminent move of the MDEQ. The agency library was being moved to a smaller facility, and there was no space to take everything. The core of the library is the geological library started by the Mississippi Geological Survey a century ago. The state geologist/director of the library was responsible for making decisions about what to give away or discard. The core geological library would be kept intact, including key journals, other state geological survey publications, USGS series and reference books. Reducing the volume of material was mandatory. MDEQ desired that the more valuable of these publications go to an institutional library where they would be incorporated into the collections and made available for use. This article provides a case study of how an academic library coordinated efforts among several departments to process a large donated collection. Specifically, it describes how Mississippi State University Libraries carried out the project

Distance Education And Learning Styles: Some Interesting Results

    Get PDF
The rush to offer web courses has left many questions as to what makes them effective and satisfactory. Important issues are: the perceived advantages of web-based courses; appropriate pedagogical tools (e.g., streaming media, PowerPoint presentations) to facilitate student-content interaction, media richness, and the influence of antecedent characteristics, such as gender, experience, motivation, and learning styles. Research here indicates support for media richness, web-based course advantages, some pedagogies, and minimal support for learning styles, at least Gardner’s multiple intelligences and Keirsey’s personality styles

Fluid structure in the immediate vicinity of an equilibrium three-phase contact line and assessment of disjoining pressure models using density functional theory

    Get PDF
We examine the nanoscale behavior of an equilibrium three-phase contact line in the presence of long-ranged intermolecular forces by employing a statistical mechanics of fluids approach, namely density functional theory (DFT) together with fundamental measure theory (FMT). This enables us to evaluate the predictive quality of effective Hamiltonian models in the vicinity of the contact line. In particular, we compare the results for mean field effective Hamiltonians with disjoining pressures defined through (I) the adsorption isotherm for a planar liquid film, and (II) the normal force balance at the contact line. We find that the height profile obtained using (I) shows good agreement with the adsorption film thickness of the DFT-FMT equilibrium density profile in terms of maximal curvature and the behavior at large film heights. In contrast, we observe that while the height profile obtained by using (II) satisfies basic sum rules, it shows little agreement with the adsorption film thickness of the DFT results. The results are verified for contact angles of 20, 40 and 60 degrees

Evaluating the impact of the internationalisation of urban planning on Saudi Arabian cities

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has experienced change in the development of urban planning codes, the most recent being the 2010 planning codes. Every urban planning regulation and code is devised to implement the overall urban design paradigm most suited to the city in question. For instance, the demand for modern urban facilities, coupled with the need for better transport networks around cities, has resulted in the shift from limited storey heights for buildings to more liberal, limitless storey heights. From the 1970s to date, the Saudi Arabian government has been engaging internationally acclaimed designers and planners, such as Forster and Partners International Designers, and Henning Larsen Architects of Denmark, to work with Saudi Arabian experts in respect of the ‘internationalisation’ of urban planning. The main driver for the paradigm shift in the urban planning processes has been the population growth and economic development. This entails an increase in the demand for a new generation of high-tech and knowledge-oriented industries in order to spread public services more evenly and broaden the scope and effectiveness of development policies among regions. Given the potential of such an urban planning strategy to influence both the current and future urban form, this research assesses the impact of internationalisation of urban planning on Saudi Arabian cities. It concludes that planners themselves are not sufficiently appreciative of the requirement for urban infrastructure that accompanies the new planning regulations.
