    Enrichment and characterization of a bacteria consortium capable of heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification at low temperature

    Nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment plants is usually severely inhibited under cold temperature. The present study proposes bioaugmentation using psychrotolerant heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification consortium to enhance nitrogen removal at low temperature. A functional consortium has been successfully enriched by stepped increase in DO concentration. Using this consortium, the specific removal rates of ammonia and nitrate at 10 degrees C reached as high as 3.1 mg N/(g SS h) and 9.6 mg N/ (g SS h), respectively. PCR-DGGE and clone library analysis both indicated a significant reduction in bacterial diversity during enrichment. Phylogenetic analysis based on nearly full-length 16S rRNA genes showed that Alphaproteobacteria. Deltaproteobacteria and particularly Bacteroidetes declined while Gammaproteobacteria (all clustered into Pseudomonas sp.) and Betaproteobacteria (mainly Rhodoferax ferrireducens) became dominant in the enriched consortium. It is likely that Pseudomonas spp. played a major role in nitrification and denitrification, while R. ferrireducens and its relatives utilized nitrate as both electron acceptor and nitrogen source.     Motion Imitation Based on Sparsely Sampled Correspondence

    Existing techniques for motion imitation often suffer a certain level of latency due to their computational overhead or a large set of correspondence samples to search. To achieve real-time imitation with small latency, we present a framework in this paper to reconstruct motion on humanoids based on sparsely sampled correspondence. The imitation problem is formulated as finding the projection of a point from the configuration space of a human's poses into the configuration space of a humanoid. An optimal projection is defined as the one that minimizes a back-projected deviation among a group of candidates, which can be determined in a very efficient way. Benefited from this formulation, effective projections can be obtained by using sparse correspondence. Methods for generating these sparse correspondence samples have also been introduced. Our method is evaluated by applying the human's motion captured by a RGB-D sensor to a humanoid in real-time.     Computer-aided design of bevel gear tooth surfaces

    This paper presents a computer-aided design procedure for generating bevel gears. The development is based on examining a perfectly plastic, cone-shaped gear blank rolling over a cutting tooth on a plane crown rack. The resulting impression on the plastic gear blank is the envelope of the cutting tooth. This impression and envelope thus form a conjugate tooth surface. Equations are presented for the locus of points on the tooth surface. The same procedures are then extended to simulate the generation of a spiral bevel gear.     Resampling-Based Ensemble Methods for Online Class Imbalance Learning

    Online class imbalance learning is a new learning problem that combines the challenges of both online learning and class imbalance learning. It deals with data streams having very skewed class distributions. This type of problems commonly exists in real-world applications, such as fault diagnosis of real-time control monitoring systems and intrusion detection in computer networks. In our earlier work, we defined class imbalance online, and proposed two learning algorithms OOB and UOB that build an ensemble model overcoming class imbalance in real time through resampling and time-decayed metrics. In this paper, we further improve the resampling strategy inside OOB and UOB, and look into their performance in both static and dynamicdatastreams.Wegivethefirstcomprehensiveanalysisofclassimbalanceindatastreams,intermsofdatadistributions, imbalance rates and changes in class imbalance status. We find that UOB is better at recognizing minority-class examples in static data streams, and OOB is more robust against dynamic changes in class imbalance status. The data distribution is a major factor affecting their performance. Based on the insight gained, we then propose two new ensemble methods that maintain both OOB and UOB with adaptive weights for final predictions, called WEOB1 and WEOB2. They are shown to possess the strength of OOB and UOB with good accuracy and robustness

    Data-Driven Design-by-Analogy: State of the Art and Future Directions

    Design-by-Analogy (DbA) is a design methodology wherein new solutions, opportunities or designs are generated in a target domain based on inspiration drawn from a source domain; it can benefit designers in mitigating design fixation and improving design ideation outcomes. Recently, the increasingly available design databases and rapidly advancing data science and artificial intelligence technologies have presented new opportunities for developing data-driven methods and tools for DbA support. In this study, we survey existing data-driven DbA studies and categorize individual studies according to the data, methods, and applications in four categories, namely, analogy encoding, retrieval, mapping, and evaluation. Based on both nuanced organic review and structured analysis, this paper elucidates the state of the art of data-driven DbA research to date and benchmarks it with the frontier of data science and AI research to identify promising research opportunities and directions for the field.
