    Widespread subsonic turbulence in Ophiuchus North 1

    Supersonic motions are common in molecular clouds. (Sub)sonic turbulence is usually detected toward dense cores and filaments. However, it remains unknown whether (sub)sonic motions at larger scales (\gtrsim1~pc) can be present in different environments or not. Located at a distance of about 110 pc, Ophiuchus North 1 (Oph N1) is one of the nearest molecular clouds that allows in-depth investigation of its turbulence properties by large-scale mapping observations of single-dish telescopes. We carried out the 12^{12}CO (J=10J=1-0) and C18^{18}O (J=10J=1-0) imaging observations toward Oph N1 with the Purple Mountain Observatory 13.7 m telescope. The observations have an angular resolution of \sim55\arcsec (i.e., 0.03~pc). Most of the whole C18^{18}O emitting regions have Mach numbers of \lesssim1, demonstrating the large-scale (sub)sonic turbulence across Oph N1. Based on the polarization measurements, we estimate the magnetic field strength of the plane-of-sky component to be \gtrsim9~μ\muG. We infer that Oph N1 is globally sub-Alfv{\'e}nic, and is supported against gravity mainly by the magnetic field. The steep velocity structure function can be caused by the expansion of the Sh~2-27 H{\scriptsize II} region or the dissipative range of incompressible turbulence. Our observations reveal a surprising case of clouds characterised by widespread subsonic turbulence and steep size-linewidth relationship.     Piercing Through Highly Obscured and Compton-thick AGNs in the Chandra Deep Fields: I. X-ray Spectral and Long-term Variability Analyses

    We present a detailed X-ray spectral analysis of 1152 AGNs selected in the Chandra Deep Fields (CDFs), in order to identify highly obscured AGNs (NH>1023 cm2N_{\rm H} > 10^{23}\ \rm cm^{-2}). By fitting spectra with physical models, 436 (38%) sources with LX>1042 erg s1L_{\rm X} > 10^{42}\ \rm erg\ s^{-1} are confirmed to be highly obscured, including 102 Compton-thick (CT) candidates. We propose a new hardness-ratio measure of the obscuration level which can be used to select highly obscured AGN candidates. The completeness and accuracy of applying this method to our AGNs are 88% and 80%, respectively. The observed logN-logS relation favors cosmic X-ray background models that predict moderate (i.e., between optimistic and pessimistic) CT number counts. 19% (6/31) of our highly obscured AGNs that have optical classifications are labeled as broad-line AGNs, suggesting that, at least for part of the AGN population, the heavy X-ray obscuration is largely a line-of-sight effect, i.e., some high-column-density clouds on various scales (but not necessarily a dust-enshrouded torus) along our sightline may obscure the compact X-ray emitter. After correcting for several observational biases, we obtain the intrinsic NH distribution and its evolution. The CT-to-highly-obscured fraction is roughly 52% and is consistent with no evident redshift evolution. We also perform long-term (~17 years in the observed frame) variability analyses for 31 sources with the largest number of counts available. Among them, 17 sources show flux variabilities: 31% (5/17) are caused by the change of NH, 53% (9/17) are caused by the intrinsic luminosity variability, 6% (1/17) are driven by both effects, and 2 are not classified due to large spectral fitting errors.Comment: 32 pages, 21 figures, 9 tables, accepted for publication in Ap

    Effects of rutin from leaves and flowers of buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench.) on angiotensin II-induced hypertrophy of cardiac myocytes and proliferation of fibroblasts

    Rutin was isolated from dried leaves and flowers of buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench.). The effects of rutin on angiotensin II-induced hypertrophy of cultured cardiac myocytes and proliferation of cardiac fibroblasts of neonatal rats were evaluated by analyzing the cell surface area, measuring the protein synthesis rate through 3H-leucine incorporation, and the MTT method. Rutin (0.8 to 8.0 mg/l) exhibited a strong inhibition on the hypertrophy and proliferation.     The Physiology Constant Database of Teen-Agers in Beijing

    Physiology constants of adolescents are important to understand growing living systems and are a useful reference in clinical and epidemiological research. Until recently, physiology constants were not available in China and therefore most physiologists, physicians, and nutritionists had to use data from abroad for reference. However, the very difference between the Eastern and Western races casts doubt on the usefulness of overseas data. We have therefore created a database system to provide a repository for the storage of physiology constants of teen-agers in Beijing. The several thousands of pieces of data are now divided into hematological biochemistry, lung function, and cardiac function with all data manually checked before being transferred into the database. The database was accomplished through the development of a web interface, scripts, and a relational database. The physiology data were integrated into the relational database system to provide flexible facilities by using combinations of various terms and parameters. A web browser interface was designed for the users to facilitate their searching. The database is available on the web. The statistical table, scatter diagram, and histogram of the data are available for both anonym and user according to queries, while only the user can achieve detail, including download data and advanced search

    Long-term prednisone treatment causes fungal microbiota dysbiosis and alters the ecological interaction between gut mycobiome and bacteriome in rats

    Glucocorticoids (GCs) are widely used in the treatment of immune-mediated diseases due to their anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. Prednisone is one of the most commonly used GCs. However, it is still unknown whether prednisone affects gut fungi in rats. Herein we investigated whether prednisone changed the composition of gut fungi and the interactions between gut mycobiome and bacteriome/fecal metabolome in rats. Twelve male Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly assigned to a control group and a prednisone group which received prednisone daily by gavage for 6 weeks. ITS2 rRNA gene sequencing of fecal samples was performed to identify differentially abundant gut fungi. The associations between gut mycobiome and bacterial genera/fecal metabolites obtained from our previously published study were explored by using Spearman correlation analysis. Our data showed that there were no changes in the richness of gut mycobiome in rats after prednisone treatment, but the diversity increased significantly. The relative abundance of genera Triangularia and Ciliophora decreased significantly. At the species level, the relative abundance of Aspergillus glabripes increased significantly, while Triangularia mangenotii and Ciliophora sp. decreased. In addition, prednisone altered the gut fungi-bacteria interkingdom interactions in rats after prednisone treatment. Additionally, the genus Triangularia was negatively correlated with m-aminobenzoic acid, but positively correlated with hydrocinnamic acid and valeric acid. Ciliophora was negatively correlated with phenylalanine and homovanillic acid, but positively correlated with 2-Phenylpropionate, hydrocinnamic acid, propionic acid, valeric acid, isobutyric acid, and isovaleric acid. In conclusion, long-term prednisone treatment caused fungal microbiota dysbiosis and might alter the ecological interaction between gut mycobiome and bacteriome in rats

    RNA-Seq based phylogeny recapitulates previous phylogeny of the genus Flaveria (Asteraceae) with some modifications.

    BACKGROUND: The genus Flaveria has been extensively used as a model to study the evolution of C4 photosynthesis as it contains C3 and C4 species as well as a number of species that exhibit intermediate types of photosynthesis. The current phylogenetic tree of the genus Flaveria contains 21 of the 23 known Flaveria species and has been previously constructed using a combination of morphological data and three non-coding DNA sequences (nuclear encoded ETS, ITS and chloroplast encoded trnL-F). RESULTS: Here we developed a new strategy to update the phylogenetic tree of 16 Flaveria species based on RNA-Seq data. The updated phylogeny is largely congruent with the previously published tree but with some modifications. We propose that the data collection method provided in this study can be used as a generic method for phylogenetic tree reconstruction if the target species has no genomic information. We also showed that a "F. pringlei" genotype recently used in a number of labs may be a hybrid between F. pringlei (C3) and F. angustifolia (C3-C4). CONCLUSIONS: We propose that the new strategy of obtaining phylogenetic sequences outlined in this study can be used to construct robust trees in a larger number of taxa. The updated Flaveria phylogenetic tree also supports a hypothesis of stepwise and parallel evolution of C4 photosynthesis in the Flavaria clade
