    Intersubjectivity in the Fiction of Doris Lessing

    In this thesis, I will be examining selective works by the novelist Doris Lessing. The aim of the thesis is to examine Lessing’s oeuvre by approaching her fiction as an attempt to understand the subject as an effect of intersubjectivity. The thesis approaches the question of intersubjectivity through a broadly psychoanalytic framework, not only engaging with Lessing’s own particular interests in psychoanalysis, but also standing back and reframing her work through approaches to intersubjectivity available in work by Freud and Jung, Klein, and object relational and existential dynamic psychologies. The thesis will, throughout, endeavour to situate psychoanalytic approaches in specifically historical and political contexts, also drawing on phenomenology to examine Lessing’s depiction of a transcendental mode of experience which is reached through an ongoing evolutionary consciousness. Her dialectical positioning of the subject reveals a restless struggle towards a conciliation between self and others. The thesis reflects a trajectory of Lessing’s work from her earlier African novels to later writing, The Fifth Child and Ben, in the World. The thesis begins by examining the structure of the family and mother-daughter relationships in the context of the historically specific political milieu of post-war apartheid in South Africa; it ends by examining the question of the availability of an ethics of care in Thatcherite Britain as reflected in the Ben novels. Melanie Klein’s work and the later object-relations theory influenced by it, are adopted to provide a frame through which to try to illuminate Lessing’s concern with the possibility of motivating positive interactions between self and others, and as an alternative to the tragic liberal view of the self as an anxious isolate proposed by Freud. In each chapter, the thesis focuses on the variety of Lessing’s formal experiments in her attempt to develop a late ethics of care built on a foundation of intersubjectivity. This emergent vision of the self opens up the possibility of reconstituting new modes of interaction between the self and the outer world: Lessing uses her fictional worlds to posit visionary possibilities in the world outside the fiction. Often employing critical modes of the Utopian and Apocalyptic, Lessing envisions the possibility of a new and fluid community that is constituted on the foundation of a revised albeit fragile ethics of care. Her fiction suggests that the power of creation and imagination necessary to realise such a vision belongs not only to the artist, but is also available for development in the psychosocial journey towards a new democratic subjectivity that might realise a new public order

    High-Mobility Pentacene-Based Thin-Film Transistors With a Solution-Processed Barium Titanate Insulator

    Abstract—Pentacene-based organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) with solution-processed barium titanate (Ba1.2Ti0.8O3) as a gate insulator are demonstrated. The electrical properties of pentacene-based TFTs show a high field-effect mobility of 8.85 cm2 · V−1 · s−1, a low threshold voltage of −1.89 V, and a low subthreshold slope swing of 310 mV/decade. The chemical composition and binding energy of solution-processed barium titanate thin films are analyzed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The matching surface energy on the surface of the barium titanate thin film is 43.12 mJ · m−2, which leads to Stranski–Krastanov mode growth, and thus, high mobility is exhibited in pentacene-based TFTs.     Supported Zinc Oxide Photocatalyst for Decolorization and Mineralization of Orange G Dye Wastewater under UV365 Irradiation

    To solve the environmental challenge of textile wastewater, a UV/ZnO photocatalytic system was proposed. The objective of this study was to prepare a photocatalytic system by utilizing both cold cathode fluorescent light (CCFL) UV irradiation and steel mesh supported ZnO nanoparticles in a closed reactor for the degradation of azo dye C.I. Orange G (OG). Various operating parameters such as reaction time, preparation temperature, mixing speed, ZnO dosage, UV intensity, pH, initial dye concentration, and service duration were studied. Results presented efficient color and total organic carbon (TOC) removal of the OG azo dye by the designed photocatalytic system. The optimal ZnO dosage for color removal was 60 g m−2. An alkaline pH of 11.0 was sufficient for photocatalytic decolorization and mineralization. The rate of color removal decreased with the increase in the initial dye concentration. However, the rate of color removal increased with the increase in the UV intensity. The steel mesh supported ZnO can be used repeatedly over 10 times without losing the color removal efficiency for 120 min reaction time. Results of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and ion chromatography (IC) indicated the breakage of N=N bonds and formation of sulfate, nitrate, and nitrite as the major and minor products.     Clinical significance of erythromycin-resistant Campylobacter jejuni in children

    Campylobacter has been recognized as the common cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in many countries. Increasing erythromycin resistance in Campylobacter jejuni infection is noted recently, but severe case was rarely reported. In this study, we aimed to clarify the clinical significance of the resistant strain of C jejuni in children. We reviewed the charts of children who were diagnosed with C jejuni enteritis in our hospital from January 2000 to December 2005, including 326 patients (117 males and 209 females). All the cases had positive stool culture. We divided them into two groups, the sensitive group (a total of 306 cases) and resistant group (a total of 20 cases), according to the drug sensitivity. We analyzed the clinical manifestations and laboratory data between the two groups. The mean age was 3.79±3.24 years in the sensitive group and 3.03±2.84 years in the resistant group. There was no significant difference between the two groups in clinical presentations and laboratory examinations. No mortality was found, and one case was initially presented with colonic perforation. This report demonstrates that infection by erythromycin-resistant strains of C jejuni has no clinical significance in children, despite the probably increased emergence of erythromycin resistance

    Deep convolutional neural network for rib fracture recognition on chest radiographs

    IntroductionRib fractures are a prevalent injury among trauma patients, and accurate and timely diagnosis is crucial to mitigate associated risks. Unfortunately, missed rib fractures are common, leading to heightened morbidity and mortality rates. While more sensitive imaging modalities exist, their practicality is limited due to cost and radiation exposure. Point of care ultrasound offers an alternative but has drawbacks in terms of procedural time and operator expertise. Therefore, this study aims to explore the potential of deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) in identifying rib fractures on chest radiographs.MethodsWe assembled a comprehensive retrospective dataset of chest radiographs with formal image reports documenting rib fractures from a single medical center over the last five years. The DCNN models were trained using 2000 region-of-interest (ROI) slices for each category, which included fractured ribs, non-fractured ribs, and background regions. To optimize training of the deep learning models (DLMs), the images were segmented into pixel dimensions of 128 × 128.ResultsThe trained DCNN models demonstrated remarkable validation accuracies. Specifically, AlexNet achieved 92.6%, GoogLeNet achieved 92.2%, EfficientNetb3 achieved 92.3%, DenseNet201 achieved 92.4%, and MobileNetV2 achieved 91.2%.DiscussionBy integrating DCNN models capable of rib fracture recognition into clinical decision support systems, the incidence of missed rib fracture diagnoses can be significantly reduced, resulting in tangible decreases in morbidity and mortality rates among trauma patients. This innovative approach holds the potential to revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of chest trauma, ultimately leading to improved clinical outcomes for individuals affected by these injuries. The utilization of DCNNs in rib fracture detection on chest radiographs addresses the limitations of other imaging modalities, offering a promising and practical solution to improve patient care and management

    Prenatal Diagnosis of Pulmonary Sequestration by Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging

    A 36-year-old multigravida, G2P1, underwent routine ultrasound scan at 22+1 weeks of gestation, which revealed a single normally growing fetus with left intrathoracic mass and left displacement of the cardiac apex. The left intrathoracic wedge-shaped hyperechogenic mass, measuring 32 × 25 mm in size, was situated at the lower portion of the left lung. A combination of color and power Doppler ultrasound allowed visualization of a vessel arising from the descending aorta, which supplied the mass. The diagnosis of extralobar pulmonary sequestration was made. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was also performed and revealed a well-defined mass with homogeneous high-signal intensity when compared with normal lung tissue in the left upper lung field, which was compatible with pulmonary sequestration. The pulmonary mass was followed up by color and power Doppler every 2 weeks. The peak velocity of 11.85 cm/sec and the diameter of the feeding artery of 1.19 mm gradually decreased and disappeared 8 weeks later. The intrathoracic mass disappeared 10 weeks later at 32+1 gestational weeks. Repeat MRI also revealed spontaneous regression of the mass in favor of resorption of sequestration. The fetus was delivered at 38+1 gestational weeks. A male newborn weighing 2,520 g was spontaneously delivered with an Apgar score of 8 at 1 minute and 9 at 5 minutes. In our patient, it is suggested that progressive decreases in the peak velocity of the feeding vessel heralded the spontaneous regression of pulmonary sequestration not associated with hydrops/hydrothorax
