Taking Back the Trash: Comparing European Extended Producer Responsibility and Take-Back Liability to U.S. Environmental Policy and Attitudes

    Get PDF
This Note explores the mandates adopted by the European Union and individual European states and examines the feasibility of their implementation in the United States. Part II outlines the current extended producer responsibility schemes in Europe and the current waste disposal system in the United States. Part III examines the societal and cultural differences that account for varying environmental attitudes in Europe and the United States, with a focus on Germany. Part IV discusses the feasibility of developing national take-back requirements in the United States by examining legislative obstacles and other barriers. Part V offers a conclusion and recommendation for the United States that builds on the strengths of the European regimes\u27 schemes while recognizing the weaknesses of those plans

Phryssonotus novaehollandiae Silvestri, 1923 : the sole Australian representative of the millipede Family Synxenidae

Examination of synxenid millipedes from a number of collections confirms that Phryssonotus novaehollandiae is the sole representative of the genus and family in Australia. P. novaehollandiae was found to have the most widespread distribution of any native Australian millipede species. It occurs in a range of well-drained habitats including heathlands, woodlands and coastal scrub. Several thelytokous (female only) populations were found in coastal areas of south eastern Australia

New species of Polyxenida in Israel (Diplopoda, Penicillata)

The identification of 5 species from a recent collection of 23 specimens from two areas in Israel is given. Two new species of Polyxenida are recorded, including the first species in the family Synxenidae (Phryssonotus sp.) and the first species from the family Polyxenidae, subfamily Macroxeninae (Chilexenus sp.), from Israel. These spe-cies are identified only to genus due to the lack of undamaged adult material. Two species in the family Lophoprocti-dae are also identified, one previously recorded but not described, is now described as Lophoproctus israelensis sp. nov., and Lophoproctinus chichinii Condé, 1951is recorded from Israel for the first time. The fifth species is identified as possibly a new species in the genus Polyxenus and likely to be synonymous with the specimens identified as Polyx-enus lagurus Linnaeus, 1758 in a previous study. This is just the second collection from Israel to be identified and brings the total number of Polyxenida species found in Israel to 8. All 3 families of Polyxenida are represented in this list, together with all 3 subfamilies of the most numerous family, Polyxenidae

Trait perfectionism : an investigation of the mediating effects of negative repetitive thought and the role of mindfulness

Although perfectionism has been related to various maladaptive outcomes, several studies have demonstrated inconsistent relationships between the dimensions of trait perfectionism and psychological distress. Furthermore, little research has examined mechanisms underlying maladaptive trait perfectionism or potential intervention strategies. The aim of the current study was to investigate the mediating effects of worry and rumination on the relationships between maladaptive trait perfectionism and psychological distress, and to relate these multiple mediator models to a five-facet model of mindfulness. A battery of questionnaires was employed to examine these relationships in a sample of 213 undergraduate university students. Socially prescribed perfectionism was strongly related to psychological distress, including negative affect, depression, anxiety, and stress, while self-oriented perfectionism and other-oriented perfectionism appeared generally unrelated to psychological distress. In terms of mindfulness, the facets of acting with awareness, non-judging of inner experience, and to a lesser extent nonreactivity to inner experience, appeared to be the strongest independent contributors to the variables in the mediational models, namely, socially prescribed perfectionism, worry, rumination, and psychological distress. Furthermore, worry and rumination mediated the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and negative affect; however, in the presence of high levels of dispositional mindfulness, rumination was no longer a mediating mechanism in this model. Overall, socially prescribed perfectionism emerged as the most detrimental dimension of trait perfectionism and dispositional mindfulness appeared to play a role in decreased levels of related negative repetitive thoughts and psychological distress

The millipedes of Barrow Island, Western Australia (Diplopoda)

Six species of millipedes are recorded from Barrow Island, including three species of pin-cushion millipedes of the order Polyxenida, Lophoturus madecassus (Marquet and Condé, 1950) (Lophoproctidae), Unixenus mjoebergi (Verhoeff, 1924) (Polyxenidae) and Phryssonotus novaehollandiae (Silvestri, 1923) (Synxenidae), a single species of the order Spirobolida, Speleostrophus nesiotes Hoffman, 1994 (Trigoniulidae), and two species of the order Polydesmida, Boreohesperus dubitalis Car and Harvey, 2013 (Paradoxosomatidae) and one species of the family Haplodesmidae (genus and species indet.). Lophoturus madecassus is circum-tropical in distribution, Unixenus mjoebergi and Phryssonotus novaehollandiae are found also on mainland Australia, but the other three species are endemic to the island. Speleostrophus nesiotes is a highly modified troglobiotic species, currently listed as threatened by the Western Australian government. It is unclear at present whether the haplodesmid specimen is a troglobite

Four days of mindfulness meditation training for graduate students: A pilot study examining effects on mindfulness, self-regulation, and executive function

    Get PDF
Self-regulation facilitates coping with academic stress and demands. This pilot study examined the effects of four consecutive mindfulness meditation classes on self-regulation and executive function in graduate students. Self-report measures of mindfulness, self-regulation, and executive functions were completed before and after the mindfulness classes. Paired t-tests compared pre-post training scores and effect sizes were calculated using Cohen’s d. A sample of 8 psychology graduate students (7 female) volunteered to participate in the mindfulness training. The group classes were modeled after meditation practices in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. Each class involved a specific theme: (1) Stepping Out of Automatic Pilot, (2) Awareness of the Breath, Body, Sounds, and Thoughts, (3) Mindful Movement, and (4) Working with Difficulty. Students significantly improved in mindfulness and self-regulation skills. Large effects were obtained for increases in total mindfulness, and the mindfulness facets of acting with awareness and non-reactivity to inner experiences. Additionally, large effects were calculated for total self-regulation and the self-regulatory facet of self-reinforcement. The current pilot study provides preliminary support for cultivating mindfulness skills and enhancing self-regulatory capacity in graduate students through four consecutive days of mindfulness training
