“[I]n a complex society and an era of pervasive governmental regulation, defining the proper realm for free exercise can be difficult.” Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., 134 S. Ct. 2751, 2781, 2785 (2014) (Kennedy, J., concurring). The Religious Freedom Restoration Act (“RFRA”)2 addresses that difficulty by harmonizing religious freedom and the interests of third parties. RFRA will not exempt free exercise from a law’s command simply because the law substantially burdens religion—nor will it deny a religious exemption simply because the exemption would affect a third party

Rocuronium vs Succinylcholine: Emergency Airway Management of the COVID-19 Patient

Tracheal Intubation is routinely performed in many settings.  Anesthesia providers are experts in this procedure.  Determination for the best possible approach for tracheal intubation include patient and provider specific considerations.  Severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS CoV-2) infection has led to the COVID-19 pandemic.  SARS CoV-2 is a highly contagious RNA virus that has caused widespread infections, severe respiratory disease, and deaths.  The purpose of this article is to describe the airway management currently recommended in Germany as well as the United States, the multi-systems pathophysiologic complications of these patients, and review the need for minimum airway manipulation prior to intubation of the trachea.  Further, this article discusses the pharmacologic options that are available for muscle relaxation during rapid sequence induction.  A review of the literature was performed.  Further, some authors of this article have actively participated in airway management of COVID-19 patients.  Available literature and guidelines suggest that rapid sequence induction with minimal airway manipulation is superior to standard induction. The article suggests that appropriate doses of rocuronium with an option of sugammadex reversal is a safer and superior choice to succinylcholine

Implications of Training in Incremental Theories of Intelligence for Undergraduate Statistics Students

This chapter documents the effects of training in incremental theories of intelligence on students in introductory statistics courses at a liberal arts university in the US. Incremental theories of intelligence examine the beliefs individuals hold of knowledge and how it is attained. An individual with an incremental theory of intelligence believes that intelligence can be developed. The research examined differences by gender in mastery of statistics and attitudes toward statistics for students who received growth mind-set training. A pre-test, post-test design utilised the Students’ Attitudes Toward Statistics© instrument and the Comprehensive Assessment of Outcomes in a first Statistics course. An ANCOVA revealed that females gained more than males on their value of statistics (F(1, 63) 9.40, MSE 3.79, p .003, η2 P 0.134) and decreased less for effort expended to learn statistics (F(1, 63) 4.41, MSE 4.07, p .040, η2 P 0.067). Females also gained mastery of statistical concepts at a greater rate (F(1, 63) 5.30, MSE 0.06, p .025, η2 P 0.080) indicating a possible path to alleviate the under-representation of females in STEM

Bringing People Back into Public Health Data: Community Feedback on a Set of Visualization Tools - Summary Report

This course-based study is a product of the University of Denver’s Spring 2022 The Social Determination of Health (ANTH 2424) class. The study aimed to understand how well a set of public health visualization tools tells the data stories about people in Colorado, and about important public health problems. For this, a team of almost sixty undergraduate students taking the class, coordinated by three graduate teaching assistants, and directed by the course instructor interviewed a total of fifty-six people from Colorado, qualitatively analyzed those interviews, and wrote reports that draw conclusions and recommendations

The effectiveness of ERAS guidelines in reducing postoperative pain

BACKGROUND: Poorly controlled acute postsurgical pain can promote chronic opioid use and misuse long after the initial surgical procedure. Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) guidelines have shown promise in reducing opioid exposure and minimizing opioid-related side effects. AIMS: The aims of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project were to assess the ERAS literature to guide postoperative pain management practice change at an adult colorectal surgical unit, evaluate the practice change outcomes, and disseminate the findings. METHODS: A Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Time (PICOT) question was established to guide an ERAS literature search. Found articles were critically appraised using the FULD Critical Appraisal Tool. Following the critical appraisal, the steps of EBP were utilized to implement an ERAS guideline for adult colorectal surgical patients in a 281-bed medical center. Outcomes of the practice change were evaluated by comparing multimodal analgesic, regional anesthesia, and opioid pain medication use before and after guideline implementation. RESULTS: Five articles were critically appraised for guideline development. After implementation, data demonstrated an increase in the use of multimodal analgesics and regional anesthesia and a decrease in the use of opioid pain medication. These findings were disseminated through multiple venues within the hospital, including a presentation to the stakeholders. LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION: Evidence-based strategies to reduce postoperative pain are achievable while reducing perioperative opioid consumption. Engagement of key stakeholders and timely rollout of EBP changes are important for successful implementation. ERAS guidelines with a multimodal analgesia pathway are an effective way to reduce postoperative pain and perioperative opioid consumption
