Global Symmetries and D-Terms in Supersymmetric Field Theories
We study the role of D-terms in supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking. By carefully
analyzing the SUSY multiplets containing various conserved currents in theories
with global symmetries, we obtain a number of constraints on the
renormalization group flow in supersymmetric field theories. Under broad
assumptions, these results imply that there are no SUSY-breaking vacua, not
even metastable ones, with parametrically large D-terms. This explains the
absence of such D-terms in models of dynamical SUSY-breaking. There is,
however, a rich class of calculable models which generate comparable D-terms
and F-terms through a variety of non-perturbative effects; these D-terms can be
non-abelian. We give several explicit examples of such models, one of which is
a new calculable limit of the 3-2 model.Comment: 34 pages, 2 figures; reference added, minor change
Association between the c.*229C>T polymorphism of the topoisomerase IIb binding protein 1 (TopBP1) gene and breast cancer
Topoisomerase IIb binding protein 1 (TopBP1)
is involved in cell survival, DNA replication, DNA damage
repair and cell cycle checkpoint control. The biological
function of TopBP1 and its close relation with BRCA1
prompted us to investigate whether alterations in the
TopBP1 gene can influence the risk of breast cancer.
The aim of this study was to examine the association
between five polymorphisms (rs185903567, rs116645643,
rs115160714, rs116195487, and rs112843513) located in
the 30UTR region of the TopBP1 gene and breast cancer
risk as well as allele-specific gene expression. Five hundred
thirty-four breast cancer patients and 556 population controls
were genotyped for these SNPs. Allele-specific Top-
BP1 mRNA and protein expressions were determined by
using real time PCR and western blotting methods,
respectively. Only one SNP (rs115160714) showed an
association with breast cancer. Compared to homozygous
common allele carriers, heterozygous and homozygous for
the T variant had significantly increased risk of breast
cancer (adjusted odds ratio = 3.81, 95 % confidence
interval: 1.63β8.34, p = 0.001). Mean TopBP1 mRNA and
protein expression were higher in the individuals with the
CT or TT genotype. There was a significant association
between the rs115160714 and tumor grade and stage. Most
carriers of minor allele had a high grade (G3) tumors
classified as T2-T4N1M0. Our study raises a possibility
that a genetic variation of TopBP1 may be implicated in
the etiology of breast cancer
Mirror Energy Differences at Large Isospin Studied through Direct Two-Nucleon Knockout
The first spectroscopy of excited states in 52Ni (Tz=-2) and 51Co (Tz=-3/2) has been obtained using the highly selective two-neutron knockout reaction. Mirror energy differences between isobaric analogue states in these nuclei and their mirror partners are interpreted in terms of isospin nonconserving effects. A comparison between large-scale shell-model calculations and data provides the most compelling evidence to date that both electromagnetic and an additional isospin nonconserving interactions for J=2 couplings, of unknown origin, are required to obtain good agreement
The Reform of Employee Compensation in Chinaβs Industrial Enterprises
Although employee compensation reform in Chinese industrial sector has been discussed in the literature, the real changes in compensation system and pay practices have received insufficient attention and warrant further examination. This paper briefly reviews the pre- and post-reform compensation system, and reports the results of a survey of pay practices in the four major types of industrial enterprises in China. The research findings indicate that the type of enterprise ownership has little influence on general compensation practices, adoption of profit-sharing plans, and subsidy and allowance packages. In general, pay is linked more to individual performance and has become an important incentive to Chinese employees. However, differences are found across the enterprise types with regard to performance-related pay. Current pay practices are positively correlated to overall effectiveness of the enterprise
The Relationship Between Anthropometric Measures, Blood Gases, and Lung Function in Morbidly Obese White Subjects
# The Author(s) 2010. This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Background Obesity may cause adverse effects on the respiratory system. The main purpose of this study was to investigate how various measures of obesity are related to arterial blood gases and pulmonary function. Methods This is a cross-sectional study of consecutive morbidly obese patients with normal lung function. Blood gas samples were taken from the radial artery after 5 min of rest with subjects sitting upright. Lung function measurements included dynamic spirometry, static lung volumes, and gas diffusing capacity. Results The 149 patients (77 % women) had a mean (SD) age of 43 years (11 years) and BMI of 45.0 kg/m 2 (6.3 kg/m 2). The mean expiratory reserve volume (ERV) was less than half (49%) of predicted value, whilst most other lung function values were within predicted range. Forty-two patients had an abnormally low pO2 value (<10.7 kPa [80 mmHg]), while eight patients had a high pCO2 value (>6.0 kPa [45 mmHg])
Acoustic Overexposure Increases the Expression of VGLUT-2 Mediated Projections from the Lateral Vestibular Nucleus to the Dorsal Cochlear Nucleus
The dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) is a first relay of the central auditory system as well as a site for integration of multimodal information. Vesicular glutamate transporters VGLUT-1 and VGLUT-2 selectively package glutamate into synaptic vesicles and are found to have different patterns of organization in the DCN. Whereas auditory nerve fibers predominantly co-label with VGLUT-1, somatosensory inputs predominantly co-label with VGLUT-2. Here, we used retrograde and anterograde transport of fluorescent conjugated dextran amine (DA) to demonstrate that the lateral vestibular nucleus (LVN) exhibits ipsilateral projections to both fusiform and deep layers of the rat DCN. Stimulating the LVN induced glutamatergic synaptic currents in fusiform cells and granule cell interneurones. We combined the dextran amine neuronal tracing method with immunohistochemistry and showed that labeled projections from the LVN are co-labeled with VGLUT-2 by contrast to VGLUT-1. Wistar rats were exposed to a loud single tone (15 kHz, 110 dB SPL) for 6 hours. Five days after acoustic overexposure, the level of expression of VGLUT-1 in the DCN was decreased whereas the level of expression of VGLUT-2 in the DCN was increased including terminals originating from the LVN. VGLUT-2 mediated projections from the LVN to the DCN are likely to play a role in the head position in response to sound. Amplification of VGLUT-2 expression after acoustic overexposure could be a compensatory mechanism from vestibular inputs in response to hearing loss and to a decrease of VGLUT-1 expression from auditory nerve fibers
Trace metals and micronutrients in bone tissues of the red fox Vulpes vulpes (L., 1758)
In this study we determined the levels of trace elements (zinc, copper, lead, cadmium and mercury) in three layers of bones of the hip joint (cartilage, compact bone and spongy bone) of 30 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from north-western Poland. Concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (ICP-AES) in inductively coupled argon plasma using a Perkin-Elmer Optima 2000 DV. Determination of Hg concentration was performed by atomic absorption spectroscopy. In cartilage, compact bone and spongy bone samples from the red fox, median concentrations of the metals studied could be arranged in the following descending series: Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd > Hg, the values ranging from 142 to 0.002Β mg/kg dw. There was a significant difference in Cu concentrations, among all the materials analyzed, with much more Cu found in spongy bone than in compact bone. Significant differences were also noted in the case of Hg concentrations in cartilage with compact bone and the spongy bone, and between concentrations of this metal in compact bone and spongy bone. In males, the concentration of Hg in spongy bone was greater than in females. Younger foxes had a higher concentration of this metal in cartilage than adults. The strongest synergistic relationships were observed in spongy bone between the Zn and Cu, Zn and Cd, as well as between Cu and Cd. Statistically significant antagonistic relationships were detected between zinc and lead in compact bone. In addition to monitoring studies conducted on the abiotic environment, an urgent need exists for long-term monitoring of concentrations of heavy metals with long-term effects on living organisms. An important addition is provided by biomonitoring studies on domesticated and free-living mammals, including Canidae
