An Induction Principle for the Weighted p-Energy Minimality of x/|x|

In this paper, we investigate minimizing properties of the map x/xx/\|x\| from the Euclidean unit ball Bn\mathbf{B}^{n} to its boundary Sn1\mathbb{S}^{n-1}, for the weighted energy functionals En_p,α(u)=_BnxαupdxE^n\_{p,\alpha}(u)=\int\_{\mathbf{B}^{n}} \|x\|^{\alpha}\|\nabla u\|^p dx. We establish the following induction principle: if the map xx:Bn+1Sn\frac{x}{\|x\|}:\mathbf{B}^{n+1}\to \mathbb{S}^n minimizes En+1_p,αE^{n+1}\_{p,\alpha} among the maps u:Bn+1Snu: \mathbf{B}^{n+1}\to \mathbb{S}^n satisfying u(x)=xu(x)=x on Sn\mathbb{S}^n, then the map yy:BnSn1\frac{y}{\|y\|}:\mathbf{B}^n\to\mathbb{S}^{n-1} minimizes En_p,α+1E^{n}\_{p,\alpha+1} among the maps v:BnSn1v: \mathbf{B}^n\to\mathbb{S}^{n-1} satisfying v(y)=yv(y)=y on Sn1\mathbb{S}^{n-1}. This result enables us to enlarge the range of values of pp and α\alpha for which x/xx/\|x\| minimizes En_p,αE^n\_{p,\alpha}.Comment: 8 page

Digital picaresque studies and the Academia Picaresca

This dissertation contributes to the Digital Humanities in general and to the study of the picaresque novel in particular. Its immediate goal is to coordinate and enhance the dialogue of scholars and readers of the picaresque. In order to accomplish this objective, I created an extensive digital bibliography and textual archive whose search capacity and structure were designed to host and foster dialogue among critics and lay readers alike. The bibliography and archive are presented in the form of a Zotero Group Library. Zotero is a free, downloadable software application that allows for the crowd-sourcing and collaborative annotation of primary and secondary references and texts by scholarly communities. The group library I have developed and begun to annotate (and which contains over 1900 works to date) represents a living medium of exchange and will always maintain its essential status as a collective work in progress. The dissertation’s objective is to cultivate order within the field, such that all who use the library will have a progressively better reading and research experience and thus feel empowered to make their own contributions to the ongoing dialogue. The technological infrastructure provided by this project will contribute to our shared endeavor as students, readers, and scholars of the picaresque. The dissertation’s Introduction discusses digital technology within a specialized scholarly community and attempts to demonstrate how digital tools can be successfully employed in traditional literary research and criticism. It is followed by two appendices: the first, a “user’s manual” for the library (its “Readme” file); the second, an automatically generated bibliography of the library’s current contents. This document is accompanied by two supplemental files, both of which represent exports of the Zotero library—one RDF (with notes but without files) and one CSV (with notes, in UTF-8 without BOM)

Molecular cloning and expression profile of Xenopus calcineurin A subunit11The nucleotide sequence of XCnA has been deposited in DDBJ/DMBL/GenBank DNA database under the accession number AB037146.

AbstractWe have cloned a cDNA encoding a catalytic subunit of calcineurin (CnA) expressed in Xenopus oocytes. The deduced amino acid sequence indicates 96.3% and 96.8% identities with the mouse and human CnAα isoforms, respectively. Xenopus CnA (XCnA) RNA and protein are expressed as maternal and throughout development. Recombinant XCnA protein interacted with calmodulin in the presence of Ca2+. Deletion of calmodulin binding domain and auto-inhibitory domain revealed calcium independent phosphatase activity, thereby showing that XCnA is likely to be modulated by both calmodulin and calcium

    Supersymmetric Self-Gravitating Solitons

We show that the `instantonic' soliton of five-dimensional Yang-Mills theory and the closely related BPS monopole of four-dimensional Yang-Mills/Higgs theory continue to be exact static, and stable, solutions of these field theories even after the inclusion of gravitational, electromagnetic and, in the four-dimensional case, dilatonic interactions, provided that certain non-minimal interactions are included. With the inclusion of these interactions, which would be required by supersymmetry, these exact self-gravitating solitons saturate a gravitational version of the Bogomol'nyi bound on the energy of an arbitrary field configuration.Comment: 39 pages, DAMTP R-93/27, phyzz

An expression profile analysis of ES cell-derived definitive endodermal cells and Pdx1-expressing cells

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We developed an efficient <it>in vitro </it>method to differentiate mouse ES cells into the definitive endoderm (DE) and then Pdx1-expressing pancreatic lineages using mesodermal-derived supporting cells, M15. Using this method, resulting ES cell-derived DE and Pdx1-expressing cells were isolated by cell sorting, and their gene expression profiles were investigated with DNA microarray. Genes that were specifically expressed in DE and/or in Pdx1-expressing cells were extracted and their expression patterns in normal embryonic development were studied.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Genes whose expression increased in DE and Pdx1 positive cells compared to the undifferentiated ES cells were chosen and <it>in situ </it>hybridizations were performed. Out of 54 genes examined, 27 were expressed in the DE of E8.5 mouse embryos and 15 genes were expressed in distinct domains in the pancreatic buds of E14.5 embryos. Among those genes expressed were <it>Foxq1, CpM, Foxp4, Pcdh1, and Zmiz1</it>, which were previously reported in other endodermal tissues. Genes, such as <it>Parm1, Tmem184a, Hipk2 </it>and <it>Sox4 </it>were reported to be expressed during early pancreatic development. <it>Nptx2, C2cd4b, Tcf7l2 and Kiss1r </it>were reported to be associated with beta cell or pancreatic functions in the adult. <it>Akr1c19, Aebp2, Pbxip1 </it>and <it>Creb3l1</it>, were novel and have not been described as being expressed either in DE or the pancreas.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We identified 27 genes, including 4 novel genes expressed in DE and pancreatic progenitor cells during normal development using an ES cell <it>in vitro </it>differentiation system. These results showed that DE cells and Pdx1/GFP-expressing cells obtained from our M15 based differentiation method mimic cells during the normal developmental processes. Additionally, ES cells are an excellent model for studies of early developmental processes.</p

Rotating charged Black Holes in Einstein-Born-Infeld theories and their ADM mass

In this work, the solution of the Einstein equations for a slowly rotating black hole with Born-Infeld charge is obtained. Geometrical properties and horizons of this solution are analyzed. The conditions when the ADM mass (as in the nonlinear static cases) and the ADM angular momentum of the system have been modified by the non linear electromagnetic field of the black hole, are considered.Comment: Final version and figures in journal.
