    Asymptotic Analysis of Wave Propagation through Periodic Arrays and Layers

    In this thesis, we use asymptotic methods to solve problems of wave propagation through infinite and finite (only consider those that are finite in one direction) arrays of scatterers. Both two- and three-dimensional arrays are considered. We always assume the scatterer size is much smaller than both the wavelength and array periodicity. Therefore a small parameter is involved and then the method of matched asymptotic expansions is applicable. When the array is infinite, the elastic wave scattering in doubly-periodic arrays of cavity cylinders and acoustic wave scattering in triply-periodic arrays of arbitrary shape rigid scatterers are considered. In both cases, eigenvalue problems are obtained to give perturbed dispersion approximations explicitly. With the help of the computer-algebra package Mathematica, examples of explicit approximations to the dispersion relation for perturbed waves are given. In the case of finite arrays, we consider the multiple resonant wave scattering problems for both acoustic and elastic waves. We use the methods of multiple scales and matched asymptotic expansions to obtain envelope equations for infinite arrays and then apply them to a strip of doubly or triply periodic arrays of scatterers. Numerical results are given to compare the transmission wave intensity for different shape scatterers for acoustic case. For elastic case, where the strip is an elastic medium with arrays of cavity cylinders bounded by acoustic media on both sides, we first give numerical results when there is one dilatational and one shear wave in the array and then compare the transmission coefficients when one dilatational wave is resonated in the array for normal incidence.     Blind Inpainting with Object-aware Discrimination for Artificial Marker Removal

    Medical images often contain artificial markers added by doctors, which can negatively affect the accuracy of AI-based diagnosis. To address this issue and recover the missing visual contents, inpainting techniques are highly needed. However, existing inpainting methods require manual mask input, limiting their application scenarios. In this paper, we introduce a novel blind inpainting method that automatically completes visual contents without specifying masks for target areas in an image. Our proposed model includes a mask-free reconstruction network and an object-aware discriminator. The reconstruction network consists of two branches that predict the corrupted regions with artificial markers and simultaneously recover the missing visual contents. The object-aware discriminator relies on the powerful recognition capabilities of the dense object detector to ensure that the markers of reconstructed images cannot be detected in any local regions. As a result, the reconstructed image can be close to the clean one as much as possible. Our proposed method is evaluated on different medical image datasets, covering multiple imaging modalities such as ultrasound (US), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and electron microscopy (EM), demonstrating that our method is effective and robust against various unknown missing region patterns

    PARP inhibitor-related haemorrhages: What does the real-world study say?

    BackgroundPARP inhibitors (PARPis) are novel molecular targeted therapeutics for inhibition of DNA repair in tumor cells, which are commonly used in ovarian cancer. Recent case reports have indicated that haemorrhages-related adverse events may be associated with PARPis. However, little is known about the characteristics and signal strength factors of this kind of adverse event.MethodsA pharmacovigilance study from January 2004 to March 2022 based on the FDA adverse event reporting system (FAERS) database was conducted by adopting the proportional imbalance method based on the four algorithms, including the reporting odds ratio (ROR), proportional reporting ratio (PRR), Bayesian confidence propagation neural networks (BCPNN) and multi-item gamma Poisson shrinker (MGPS).Results725 cases of PARPi-haemorrhages-related adverse events were identified with a fatality rate of 4.72% (30/725) and a median age of 67 years. About 88% of the adverse events occurred within 6 months, and the median duration (IQR) was 68 days. Most adverse events (n=477, 75.11%) were related to the treatment of niraparib. Importantly, niraparib exposure was associated with a significant increase in haemorrhages-related adverse events (ROR (95% CI), 1.13(1.03,1.23), PRR (χ2), 1.12(7.32), IC (IC 025), 0.17(0.15). In addition, petechiae, gingival bleeding, bloody urine, as well as rectal haemorrhage should be monitored when using niraparib.ConclusionRecognition and management of PARPi-haemorrhages-related adverse events is of significance to clinical practice. In this study, we provided a safety signal that haemorrhage-related adverse events should be monitored for when using niraparib. However, larger and more robust post-market safety studies are needed to improve the quality of this evidence

    Anomalous Dome-like Superconductivity in RE2(Cu1-xNix)5As3O2(RE=La, Pr, Nd)

    Significant manifestation of interplay of superconductivity and charge density wave, spin density wave or magnetism is dome-like variation in superconducting critical temperature (Tc) for cuprate, iron-based and heavy Fermion superconductors. Overall behavior is that the ordered temperature is gradually suppressed and the Tc is enhanced under external control parameters. Many phenomena like pesudogap, quantum critical point and strange metal emerge in the different doping range. Exploring dome-shaped Tc in new superconductors is of importance to detect emergent effects. Here, we report that the observation of superconductivity in new layered Cu-based compound RE2Cu5As3O2 (RE=La, Pr, Nd), in which the Tc exhibits dome-like variation with maximum Tc of 2.5 K, 1.2 K and 1.0 K as substituting Cu by large amount of Ni ions. The transitions of T* in former two compounds can be suppressed by either Ni doping or rare earth replacement. Simultaneously, the structural parameters like As-As bond length and c/a ratio exhibit unusual variations as Ni-doping level goes through the optimal value. The robustness of superconductivity, up to 60% of Ni doping, reveals the unexpected impurity effect on inducing and enhancing superconductivity in this novel layered materialsComment: 16 pages, 5 figures.     Formation and Identification of Unresolved Complex Mixtures in Lacustrine Biodegraded Oil from Nanxiang Basin, China

    A comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC/TOFMS) method has been developed for the formation and identification of unresolved complex mixtures (UCMs) in lacustrine biodegraded oils that with the same source rock, similar maturity, and increasing degradation rank from Nanxiang Basin, China. Normal alkanes, light hydrocarbons, isoprenoids, steranes, and terpanes are degraded gradually from oil B330 to oil G574. The compounds in biodegraded oil (oil G574) have fewer types, the polarity difference of compounds in different types is minor, and the relative content of individual compounds is similar. All the features make the compounds in biodegraded oil coelute in GC analysis and form the raised “baseline hump” named UCMs. By injecting standard materials and analyzing mass spectrums of target compounds, it is shown that cyclic alkanes with one to five rings are the major components of UCMs. Furthermore, UCMs were divided into six classes. Classes I and II, composed of alkyl-cyclohexanes, alkyl-naphthanes, and their isomers, are originated from the enrichment of hydrocarbons resistant to degradation in normal oils. Classes III ~ VI, composed of sesquiterpenoids, tricyclic terpanes, low molecular steranes, diasteranes, norhopanes, and their isomers, are probably from some newly formed compounds during the microbial transformation of oil

    Unusual double-peak specific heat and spin freezing in a spin-2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet FeAl2_{2}Se4_{4}

    We report the properties of a triangular lattice iron-chalcogenide antiferromagnet FeAl2_{2}Se4_{4}. The spin susceptibility reveals a significant antiferromagnetic interaction with a Curie-Weiss temperature {\Theta}CW_{CW} ~ -200K and a spin-2 local moment. Despite a large spin and a large |{\Theta}CW_{CW}|, the low-temperature behaviors are incompatible with conventional classical magnets. No long-range order is detected down to 0.4K. Similar to the well-known spin-1 magnet NiGa2_{2}S4_{4}, the specific heat of FeAl2_{2}Se4_{4} exhibits an unusual double-peak structure and a T2^{2} power law at low temperatures, which are attributed to the underlying quadrupolar spin correlations and the Halperin-Saslow modes, respectively. The spin freezing occurs at ~ 14K, below which the relaxation dynamics is probed by the ac susceptibility. Our results are consistent with the early theory for the spin-1 system with Heisenberg and biquadratic spin interactions. We argue that the early proposal of the quadrupolar correlation and gauge glass dynamics may be well extended to FeAl2_{2}Se4_{4}. Our results provide useful insights about the magnetic properties of frustrated quantum magnets with high spins.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    IκBα polymorphism at promoter region (rs2233408) influences the susceptibility of gastric cancer in Chinese

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Nuclear factor of kappa B inhibitor alpha (IκBα) protein is implicated in regulating a variety of cellular process from inflammation to tumorigenesis. The objective of this study was to investigate the susceptibility of rs2233408 T/C genotype in the promoter region of <it>IκBα </it>to gastric cancer and the association of this polymorphism with clinicopathologic variables in gastric cancer patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A population-based case-control study was conducted between 1999 and 2006 in Guangdong Province, China. A total of 564 gastric cancer patients and 566 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. rs2233408 genotypes in <it>IκBα </it>were analyzed by TaqMan SNP genotyping assay.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Both rs2233408 T homozygote (TT) and T heterozygotes (TC and TT) had significantly reduced gastric cancer risk (TT: OR = 0.250, 95% CI = 0.069-0.909, <it>P </it>= 0.035; TC and TT: OR = 0.721, 95% CI = 0.530-0.981, <it>P </it>= 0.037), compared with rs2233408 C homozygote (CC). rs2233408 T heterozygotes were significantly associated with reduced risk of intestinal-type gastric cancer with ORs of 0.648 (95% CI = 0.459-0.916, <it>P </it>= 0.014), but not with the diffuse or mix type of gastric cancer. The association between rs2233408 T heterozygotes and gastric cancer appeared more apparent in the older patients (age>40) (OR = 0.674, 95% CI = 0.484-0.939, <it>P </it>= 0.02). rs2233408 T heterozygotes was associated with non-cardiac gastric cancer (OR = 0.594, 95% CI = 0.411-0.859, <it>P </it>= 0.006), but not with cardiac gastric cancer. However, rs2233408 polymorphism was not associated with the prognosis of gastric cancer patients.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p><it>IκBα </it>rs2233408 T heterozygotes were associated with reduced risk of gastric cancer, especially for the development of certain subtypes of gastric cancer in Chinese population.</p

    Exploring the Differences of Sustainable Urban Development Levels from the Perspective of Multivariate Functional Data Analysis: A Case Study of 33 Cities in China

    Sustainable urban development is a dynamic, continuous, and long-term process. However, only a few studies have considered the continuous changes in urban development levels over time. From a novel perspective of multivariate functional data, this study aims to analyze the sustainable development capability of cities through dynamic evaluation, and to explore the differences in the level of sustainable development of cities. Firstly, a sustainable urban development evaluation system with 18 indicators across the economic, social, and environmental indices is established. Secondly, based on the index system, an entropy weight method for functional data is developed to assign weights to the indicators. The time weight is used to consider the effects of missing values. Then, a new method of urban development level clustering is proposed. Thirdly, the differences in sustainable urban development levels among the 33 cities in China from 2005 to 2019 are analyzed, and the cities are separated into 5 categories. The results show that the coordinated development of the economy, society, and environment can promote the sustainable development of cities. The overall level of sustainable development in Chinese cities is not high, and significant differences are observed in sustainable urban development. Notable differences and significant imbalances are observed between the sustainable development level of the cities in the central and western regions of China and the cities in the eastern coastal areas. Finally, relevant conclusions and suggestions are proposed to improve sustainable urban development
