    Seguimiento de poblaciones con baja densidad: una perspectiva de qué nivel de declive poblacional podemos detectar con certeza

    Monitoring of mammal species is an important part in detecting changes in their status. Efforts are based on a variety of direct and indirect methods and many low density populations are monitored through field signs. We present data on the endangered European red squirrel from Kidland Forest in the UK. We used cone transects to both record changes in seed availability and to monitor population trends. We examined the difficulty of accurately detecting population change when populations are low and field signs are patchily distributed. Current efforts would be sufficient to detect significant population declines of 50–75% in years with a modest squirrel population but not when they fall below one squirrel for every 20 ha of forest. The findings emphasise that monitoring aims have to be clearly defined with an awareness and understanding of what level of change the adopted methodological approach can reliably detect. We propose that mammal monitoring schemes need to be based on a pilot scheme to determine effect size and planned accordingly. Los esfuerzos van dirigidos hacia diversos métodos directos e indirectos, y muchas poblaciones que presentan una densidad baja se monitorizan mediante rastros o signos de campo. En este trabajo presentamos datos de una especie en peligro, la ardilla roja, del bosque de Kidland en el Reino Unido. Se realizaron transectos de detección de piñas o conos para registrar tanto los cambios en la disponibilidad de semillas como para monitorizar las tendencias de la población. Examinamos la dificultad que presenta detectar con precisión los cambios poblacionales, cuando las poblaciones son pequeñas y los restos alimentarios de presencia están distribuidos de forma desigual. Los esfuerzos normales deberían ser suficientes para detectar disminuciones poblacionales significativas del 50–75% en años con una población de ardillas modesta, pero no cuando la densidad está por debajo de una ardilla cada 20 ha de bosque. Nuestros hallazgos enfatizan que los esfuerzos de seguimiento deben estar claramente definidos, con el conocimiento y la comprensión de qué nivel de cambio puede realmente detectar de forma fiable el enfoque metodológico adoptado. Proponemos que los seguimientos de mamíferos deben estar basados en un esquema piloto, con el fin de determinar el efecto del tamaño, y ser planificados consecuentemente.     Improved Drought Stress Tolerance of White Clover through Hybridisation with \u3cem\u3eTrifolium uniflorum\u3c/em\u3e L.

    The objective of this study was to determine the effect of hybridisation with Trifolium uniflorum L. on drought resistance of Trifolium repens L. (white clover). Shoot dry weight of backcross 1 (BC1) hybrids was reduced less by water stress than for backcross 2 (BC2) hybrids and white clover, as were key morphological traits such as leaf area. Under water stress, important differences for the BC1 generation compared to white clover also included lower senescence, higher stolon density, increased root dry weight, and a higher maximum nodal root diameter. Drought decreased the net photosynthetic rate by up to 48% in BC2 and white clover, but there was no significant effect on the BC1 generation. BC1 hybrids were therefore more resistant to water stress than white clover. Smaller effects on stolon morphology suggest BC1 hybrids were better able to maintain cell turgor and growth, and maintenance of photosynthesis under drought may have contributed to smaller reductions in productivity. The findings suggest that BC1 hybrids may be able to maintain higher water uptake during drought than white clover by increased allocation to root biomass

    Experimental investigation of elastic mode control on a model of a transport aircraft

    A 4.5 percent DC-10 derivative flexible model with active controls is fabricated, developed, and tested to investigate the ability to suppress flutter and reduce gust loads with active controlled surfaces. The model is analyzed and tested in both semispan and complete model configuration. Analytical methods are refined and control laws are developed and successfully tested on both versions of the model. A 15 to 25 percent increase in flutter speed due to the active system is demonstrated. The capability of an active control system to significantly reduce wing bending moments due to turbulence is demonstrated. Good correlation is obtained between test and analytical prediction

    Magnetic field symmetry of pump currents of adiabatically driven mesoscopic structures

    We examine the scattering properties of a slowly and periodically driven mesoscopic sample using the Floquet function approach. One might expect that at sufficiently low driving frequencies it is only the frozen scattering matrix which is important. The frozen scattering matrix reflects the properties of the sample at a given instant of time. Indeed many aspects of adiabatic scattering can be described in terms of the frozen scattering matrix. However, we demonstrate that the Floquet scattering matrix, to first order in the driving frequency, is determined by an additional matrix which reflects the fact that the scatterer is time-dependent. This low frequency irreducible part of the Floquet matrix has symmetry properties with respect to time and/or a magnetic field direction reversal opposite to that of the frozen scattering matrix. We investigate the quantum rectification properties of a pump which additionally is subject to an external dc voltage. We split the dc current flowing through the pump into several parts with well defined properties with respect to a magnetic field and/or an applied voltage inversion.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    Energetic and spatial bonding properties from angular distributions of ultraviolet photoelectrons: application to the GaAs(110) surface

    Angle-resolved ultraviolet photoemission spectra are interpreted by combining the energetics and spatial properties of the contributing states. One-step calculations are in excellent agreement with new azimuthal experimental data for GaAs(110). Strong variations caused by the dispersion of the surface bands permit an accurate mapping of the electronic structure. The delocalization of the valence states is discussed analogous to photoelectron diffraction. The spatial origin of the electrons is determined, and found to be strongly energy dependent, with uv excitation probing the bonding region.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted for publicatio

    Supervisor Cultural Responsiveness and Unresponsiveness in Cross-Cultural Supervision

    Thirteen supervisees’ of color and 13 European American supervisees’ experiences of culturally responsive and unresponsive cross-cultural supervision were studied using consensual qualitative research. In culturally responsive supervision, all supervisees felt supported for exploring cultural issues, which positively affected the supervisee, the supervision relationship, and client outcomes. In culturally unresponsive supervision, cultural issues were ignored, actively discounted, or dismissed by supervisors, which negatively affected the supervisee, the relationship, and/or client outcomes. European American supervisees’ and supervisees’ of color experiences diverged significantly, with supervisees of color experiencing unresponsiveness more frequently and with more negative effects than European American supervisees. Implications for research and supervision practice are discussed

    Strong Coupling Theory of Two Level Atoms in Periodic Fields

    We present a new convergent strong coupling expansion for two-level atoms in external periodic fields, free of secular terms. As a first application, we show that the coherent destruction of tunnelling is a third-order effect. We also present an exact treatment of the high-frequency region, and compare it with the theory of averaging. The qualitative frequency spectrum of the transition probability amplitude contains an effective Rabi frequency.Comment: 4 pages with 3 figure

    Integrating Emerging Areas of Nursing Science into PhD Programs

    The Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science aims to “facilitate and recognize life-long nursing science career development” as an important part of its mission. In light of fast-paced advances in science and technology that are inspiring new questions and methods of investigation in the health sciences, the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science convened the Idea Festival for Nursing Science Education and appointed the Idea Festival Advisory Committee to stimulate dialogue about linking PhD education with a renewed vision for preparation of the next generation of nursing scientists. Building on the 2010 American Association of Colleges of Nursing Position Statement “The Research-Focused Doctoral Program in Nursing: Pathways to Excellence,” Idea Festival Advisory Committee members focused on emerging areas of science and technology that impact the ability of research-focused doctoral programs to prepare graduates for competitive and sustained programs of nursing research using scientific advances in emerging areas of science and technology. The purpose of this article is to describe the educational and scientific contexts for the Idea Festival, which will serve as the foundation for recommendations for incorporating emerging areas of science and technology into research-focused doctoral programs in nursing
