    Influence of dam reservoir on deep marine sedimentological environment : An example of the Kumano Trough, central Japan

    Sedimentation rate (mass accumulation rate; MAR) of surface hemipelagic sediments in the Kumano Trough, a forearc basin approximately 2000 m deep off the eastern Kii Peninsula, central Japan, was estimated from excess Pb-210 radioactivity profile and dry bulk density of the core sample. The estimated excess Pb-210 radioactivity profile was subdivided into three segments. The top segment was inferred to be affected by biological mixing in the surface mixing layer (SML). In contrast, a difference between segment-2 and segment-3 would reflect decease in MAR. With a simple model, the influence of the biological mixing and boundary age between segment-2 and segment-3 were estimated. The relationship between decreasing age of hemipelagic sediment MAR in the Kumano Trough (1950s) and dam construction age (1950s–1960s) was reasonable. Additionally, the relationship was supported by similarity in sediment grain size of dam reservoir and hemipelagic environment. Consequently, the construction of dams probably influences the deep marine hemipelagic environment of the forearc basin 2000 m below sea level

    Use of FDG-PET in Radiation Treatment Planning for Thoracic Cancers

    Radiotherapy plays an important role in the treatment for thoracic cancers. Accurate diagnosis is essential to correctly perform curative radiotherapy. Tumor delineation is also important to prevent geographic misses in radiotherapy planning. Currently, planning is based on computed tomography (CT) imaging when radiation oncologists manually contour the tumor, and this practice often induces interobserver variability. F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) has been reported to enable accurate staging and detect tumor extension in several thoracic cancers, such as lung cancer and esophageal cancer. FDG-PET imaging has many potential advantages in radiotherapy planning for these cancers, because it can add biological information to conventional anatomical images and decrease the inter-observer variability. FDG-PET improves radiotherapy volume and enables dose escalation without causing severe side effects, especially in lung cancer patients. The main advantage of FDG-PET for esophageal cancer patients is the detection of unrecognized lymph node or distal metastases. However, automatic delineation by FDG-PET is still controversial in these tumors, despite the initial expectations. We will review the role of FDG-PET in radiotherapy for thoracic cancers, including lung cancer and esophageal cancer

    In Situ Hybridization Analysis of the Expression of Futsch, Tau, and MESK2 Homologues in the Brain of the European Honeybee (Apis mellifera L.)

    BACKGROUND: The importance of visual sense in Hymenopteran social behavior is suggested by the existence of a Hymenopteran insect-specific neural circuit related to visual processing and the fact that worker honeybee brain changes morphologically according to its foraging experience. To analyze molecular and neural bases that underlie the visual abilities of the honeybees, we used a cDNA microarray to search for gene(s) expressed in a neural cell-type preferential manner in a visual center of the honeybee brain, the optic lobes (OLs). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Expression analysis of candidate genes using in situ hybridization revealed two genes expressed in a neural cell-type preferential manner in the OLs. One is a homologue of Drosophila futsch, which encodes a microtubule-associated protein and is preferentially expressed in the monopolar cells in the lamina of the OLs. The gene for another microtubule-associated protein, tau, which functionally overlaps with futsch, was also preferentially expressed in the monopolar cells, strongly suggesting the functional importance of these two microtubule-associated proteins in monopolar cells. The other gene encoded a homologue of Misexpression Suppressor of Dominant-negative Kinase Suppressor of Ras 2 (MESK2), which might activate Ras/MAPK-signaling in Drosophila. MESK2 was expressed preferentially in a subclass of neurons located in the ventral region between the lamina and medulla neuropil in the OLs, suggesting that this subclass is a novel OL neuron type characterized by MESK2-expression. These three genes exhibited similar expression patterns in the worker, drone, and queen brains, suggesting that they function similarly irrespective of the honeybee sex or caste. CONCLUSIONS: Here we identified genes that are expressed in a monopolar cell (Amfutsch and Amtau) or ventral medulla-preferential manner (AmMESK2) in insect OLs. These genes may aid in visualizing neurites of monopolar cells and ventral medulla cells, as well as in analyzing the function of these neurons

    Labelling and optical erasure of synaptic memory traces in the motor cortex

    Dendritic spines are the major loci of synaptic plasticity and are considered as possible structural correlates of memory. Nonetheless, systematic manipulation of specific subsets of spines in the cortex has been unattainable, and thus, the link between spines and memory has been correlational. We developed a novel synaptic optoprobe, AS-PaRac1 (activated synapse targeting photoactivatable Rac1), which can label recently potentiated spines specifically, and induce the selective shrinkage of AS-PaRac1-containing spines. In vivo imaging of AS-PaRac1 revealed that a motor learning induced substantial synaptic remodelling in a small subset of neurons. The acquired motor learning was disrupted by the optical shrinkage of the potentiated spines, whereas it was not affected by the identical manipulation of spines evoked by a distinct motor task in the same cortical region. Taken together, our results demonstrate that a newly acquired motor skill depends on the formation of a task-specific dense synaptic ensemble

    A prospective cohort study of neighborhood stress and ischemic heart disease in Japan: a multilevel analysis using the JACC study data

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A body of research has shown that neighborhood environment may have an effect on a variety of health outcomes, including cardiovascular disease. One explanation for the mechanism of the effect of neighborhood on cardiovascular disease is psychosocial pathways. Direct evidence for an effect of neighborhood on cardiovascular disease with adjustment for perceived stress at the individual level has not been obtained, however. The Japan Collaborative Cohort Study for the Evaluation of Cancer Risk provides a unique dataset which has aggregated area-based cohorts from 45 areas throughout Japan. The purpose of the present study was to examine the contextual effect of area-level stress on ischemic heart disease using data from a large prospective cohort in Japan.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A baseline survey of 110,792 residents of 45 areas aged 40-79 years was conducted between 1988 and 1990. Analysis was restricted to subjects from the 33 of 45 areas providing information about self-rated stress (32183 men and 45896 women). Multilevel Poisson regression models were employed in a two-level structure of individuals nested within the 33 areas. Area-level stress was calculated by sex as the number of persons who rated their stress level as high divided by the total number of subjects in that area. Mortality rate ratios (MRRs) per 1 percentage point increase in area-level stress were estimated with adjustment for compositional individual factors.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>During 15 years of follow-up (1,116,895 person-years), 936 deaths due to ischemic heart disease were recorded. Area-level stress varied from 6% to 22%. In the multivariable models, MRRs of area-level stress were 1.06 (95% confidence interval: 1.00-1.12, p = 0.043) in men and 1.07 (95% confidence interval: 1.00-1.14, p = 0.057) in women.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Area-level stress affects the likelihood of death due to ischemic heart disease of individuals in men. The present findings may suggest that stress should be considered not only within the individual but also within the neighborhood context.</p

    On the origin and evolution of the asteroid Ryugu: A comprehensive geochemical perspective

    Presented here are the observations and interpretations from a comprehensive analysis of 16 representative particles returned from the C-type asteroid Ryugu by the Hayabusa2 mission. On average Ryugu particles consist of 50% phyllosilicate matrix, 41% porosity and 9% minor phases, including organic matter. The abundances of 70 elements from the particles are in close agreement with those of CI chondrites. Bulk Ryugu particles show higher δ18O, Δ17O, and ε54Cr values than CI chondrites. As such, Ryugu sampled the most primitive and least-thermally processed protosolar nebula reservoirs. Such a finding is consistent with multi-scale H-C-N isotopic compositions that are compatible with an origin for Ryugu organic matter within both the protosolar nebula and the interstellar medium. The analytical data obtained here, suggests that complex soluble organic matter formed during aqueous alteration on the Ryugu progenitor planetesimal (several 10’s of km), <2.6 Myr after CAI formation. Subsequently, the Ryugu progenitor planetesimal was fragmented and evolved into the current asteroid Ryugu through sublimation
