    The level of self-directed learning among teacher training institute students – an early survey

    Current learning approaches have various structured learning activities as well more self-directed learning tasks guided through consultation with academics. The aim of this research is to determine students’ self-directed learning readiness (SDLRS) in a Teacher Training Institute. 266 students from the Kursus Perguruan Lepasan Ijazah (KPLI), Program Ijazah Sarjana Muda Perguruan (PISMP) and Program Persediaan Ijazah Sarjana Muda Perguruan (PPISMP) group took part in the research. The instrument is a questionnaire adopted from Guglielmino SDLRS questionnaire. Result from the data analysis showed that most of the students are on average or below average in term of SDLRS. Based on SDLRS, there is also significant difference between gender with respect to self directed learning readiness. In addition, there ia also significant difference of students’ SDLRS with respect to their courses

    Water assisted laser heat treatment of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride tool materials

    This thesis explores a new development in improving the surface properties to ultrahard material using a variety of laser systems, which are CO2 continuous wave laser water-jet system and Nd:YAG pulsed laser system. Two different types of cBN materials were used, which were bindered 82%cBN/18%AlN and 55%cBN/45%TiN. In the heat treatment using the CO2 continuous wave laser water-jet system, the effects of different types of gases, number of laser beam passes, and distribution of laser power were studied. In addition, in the heat treatment using the Nd:YAG pulsed laser system, the effects of quenching and number of laser beam passes were studied as well. In both studies, the hardness was investigated using Knoop hardness measurement, and the microstructures of the sample surfaces were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)

    Systemic endopolyploidy in Spathoglottis plicata (Orchidaceae) development

    BACKGROUND: Endopolyploidy is developmentally regulated. Presence of endopolyploidy as a result of endoreduplication has been characterized in insects, mammals and plants. The family Orchidaceae is the largest among the flowering plants. Many of the members of the orchid family are commercially micropropagated. Very little has been done to characterize the ploidy variation in different tissues of the orchid plants during development. RESULTS: The DNA contents and ploidy level of nuclei extracted from various tissues of a tropical terrestrial orchid Spathoglottis plicata were examined by flow cytometry. Sepals, petals and ovary tissues were found to have only a 2C (C, DNA content of the unreplicated haploid chromosome complement) peak. Columns, floral pedicels of newly open flowers and growing flower stems were observed to have an endopolyploid 8C peak in addition to 2C and 4C peaks. In developing floral pedicels, four peaks were observed for 2C, 4C, 8C and 16C. In root tips, there were 2C, 4C and 8C peaks. But in the root tissues at the region with root hairs, only a 2C peak was observed. Nuclei extracted from young leaves shown three peaks for 2C, 4C and 8C. A similar pattern was found in the vegetative tissues of both greenhouse-grown plants and tissue-cultured plantlets. In mature leaves, a different pattern of ploidy level was found at different parts of the leaves. In the leaf tips and middle parts, there were 2C and 4C peaks. Only at the basal part of the leaves, there were three peaks for 2C, 4C and 8C. CONCLUSIONS: Systemic variation of cellular endopolyploidy in different tissues during growth and development of Spathoglottis plicata from field-grown plants and in vitro cultures was identified.     The influence of destination personality on brand image evaluation among archaeological tourists

    Archaeological tourism is becoming increasingly important to the Malaysian tourism industry with the recognition of the Lenggong Valley as UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. This research focuses on the use of the Aaker’s (1997) brand personality concept, or in this context destination personality, in branding archaeological tourism destinations. Specifically, the objectives of this research are to identify the underlying personality dimensions that are applicable to an archaeological tourism destination such as the Lenggong Valley World Heritage Site and to determine the contribution of the brand personality dimensions towards the evaluation of the Lenggong Valley World Heritage Site’s brand image among tourists in Lenggong Valley World Heritage Site. A purposive sample of 320 tourists to the Archaeological Gallery of the Lenggong Valley was approached, and 300 usable questionnaires were analysed. The findings of the study indicate that there are six underlying personality dimensions held by the Lenggong Valley World Heritage Site, namely competence, sophistication, sincerity, ruggedness, demonstrative, and emotional. In addition, of the six dimensions, four dimensions namely sincerity, ruggedness, sophistication, and demonstrative have positive influence on brand image. The two newly emerged dimensions, demonstrative and emotional are considered a major contribution of the present research to the tourism marketing literature

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada korelasi antara pola asuh orang tua dengan kedisiplinan belajar siswa kelas XI di SMK Mudita Singkawang. Penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain koefisien korelasi. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI SMK Mudita Singkawang, sebanyak 207 siswa. Pengambilan sampel menggunakan teknik simple random sampling, sebanyak 60 sampel. Metode pengumpulan data menggunakan angket pola asuh orang tua dan angket kedisiplinan belajar. Uji hipotesis dengan bantuan SPSS 24 teknik korelasi Pearsons dengan taraf signifikansi 0,05 dengan nilai korelasional -,268 dan nilai sig. (2-tailed) ,038. Hasil penelitian menyatakan terdapat korelasi antara pola asuh orang tua dengan kedisiplinan belajar siswa kelas XI di SMK Mudita Singkawang, maka Ha diterima dan H0 ditolak
