We demonstrate a small foot print (600 nm wide) 1D silicon photonic crystal electro-optic modulator operating with only a 50 mV swing voltage and 0.1 fJ/bit switching energy at GHz speeds, which are the lowest values ever reported for a silicon electro-optic modulator. A 3 dB extinction ratio is demonstrated with an ultra-low 50 mV swing voltage with a total device energy consumption of 42.8 fJ/bit, which is dominated by the state holding energy. The total energy consumption is reduced to 14.65 fJ/bit for a 300 mV swing voltage while still keeping the switching energy at less than 2 fJ/bit. Under optimum voltage conditions, the device operates with a maximum speed of 3 Gbps with 8 dB extinction ratio, which rises to 11 dB for a 1 Gbps modulation speed

Sequence of the Gonium pectorale mating locus reveals a complex and dynamic history of changes in volvocine algal mating haplotypes. G3: Genes, Genomes, Genetics, 6(5), 1179-1189. doi:10.1534/g3.115.026229Additional Authors: Nozaki, H.Sex-determining regions (SDRs) or mating-type (MT) loci in two sequenced volvocine algal species, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Volvox carteri, exhibit major differences in size, structure, gene content, and gametolog differentiation. Understanding the origin of these differences requires investigation of MT loci from related species. Here, we determined the sequences of the minus and plus MT haplotypes of the isogamous 16-celled volvocine alga, Gonium pectorale, which is more closely related to the multicellular V. carteri than to C. reinhardtii. Compared to C. reinhardtiiMT, G. pectoraleMT is moderately larger in size, and has a less complex structure, with only two major syntenic blocs of collinear gametologs. However, the gametolog content of G. pectoraleMT has more overlap with that of V. carteriMT than with C. reinhardtiiMT, while the allelic divergence between gametologs in G. pectorale is even lower than that in C. reinhardtii. Three key sex-related genes are conserved in G. pectorale MT: GpMID and GpMTD1 in MT-, and GpFUS1 in MT+. GpFUS1 protein exhibited specific localization at the plus-gametic mating structure, indicating a conserved function in fertilization. Our results suggest that the G. pectorale-V. carteri common ancestral MT experienced at least one major reformation after the split from C. reinhardtii, and that the V. carteri ancestral MT underwent a subsequent expansion and loss of recombination after the divergence from G. pectorale. These data begin to polarize important changes that occurred in volvocine MT loci, and highlight the potential for discontinuous and dynamic evolution in SDRs. © 2016 Hamaji et al

Periodontal disease in a patient with Prader-Willi syndrome: a case report

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Prader-Willi syndrome is a complex genetic disease caused by lack of expression of paternally inherited genes on chromosome 15q11-q13. The prevalence of Prader-Willi syndrome is estimated to be one in 10,000 to 25,000. However, descriptions of the oral and dental phenotype are rare.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We describe the clinical presentation and periodontal findings in a 20-year-old Japanese man with previously diagnosed Prader-Willi syndrome. Clinical and radiographic findings confirmed the diagnosis of periodontitis. The most striking oral findings were anterior open bite, and crowding and attrition of the lower first molars. Periodontal treatment consisted of tooth-brushing instruction and scaling. Home care involved recommended use of adjunctive chlorhexidine gel for tooth brushing twice a week and chlorhexidine mouthwash twice daily. Gingival swelling improved, but further treatment will be required and our patient's oral hygiene remains poor. The present treatment of tooth-brushing instruction and scaling every three weeks therefore only represents a temporary solution.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Rather than being a direct result of genetic defects, periodontal diseases in Prader-Willi syndrome may largely result from a loss of cuspid guidance leading to traumatic occlusion, which in turn leads to the development of periodontal diseases and dental plaque because of poor oral hygiene. These could be avoided by early interventions to improve occlusion and regular follow-up to monitor oral hygiene. This report emphasizes the importance of long-term follow-up of oral health care by dental practitioners, especially pediatric dentists, to prevent periodontal disease and dental caries in patients with Prader-Willi syndrome, who appear to have problems maintaining their own oral health.</p

Biochemical Studies of Mitochondrial Malate: Quinone Oxidoreductase from Toxoplasma gondii

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite that causes toxoplasmosis and infects almost one-third of the global human population. A lack of effective drugs and vaccines and the emergence of drug resistant parasites highlight the need for the development of new drugs. The mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) is an essential pathway for energy metabolism and the survival of T. gondii. In apicomplexan parasites, malate:quinone oxidoreductase (MQO) is a monotopic membrane protein belonging to the ETC and a key member of the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and has recently been suggested to play a role in the fumarate cycle, which is required for the cytosolic purine salvage pathway. In T. gondii, a putative MQO (TgMQO) is expressed in tachyzoite and bradyzoite stages and is considered to be a potential drug target since its orthologue is not conserved in mammalian hosts. As a first step towards the evaluation of TgMQO as a drug target candidate, in this study, we developed a new expression system for TgMQO in FN102(DE3)TAO, a strain deficient in respiratory cytochromes and dependent on an alternative oxidase. This system allowed, for the first time, the expression and purification of a mitochondrial MQO family enzyme, which was used for steady-state kinetics and substrate specificity analyses. Ferulenol, the only known MQO inhibitor, also inhibited TgMQO at IC50 of 0.822 μM, and displayed different inhibition kinetics compared to Plasmodium falciparum MQO. Furthermore, our analysis indicated the presence of a third binding site for ferulenol that is distinct from the ubiquinone and malate sites

金沢大学医薬保健研究域医学系From 1973 to 1998, we resected and reconstructed the great vessels in 44 patients with primary lung cancer or mediastinal tumor. Among them, 39 patients (28 with lung cancer and 11 with mediastinal tumor) and 5 patients (all with lung cancer) underwent reconstruction of the superior vena cava (SVC) and aorta, respectively. The SVC was repaired by expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (EPTFE) graft (n = 8), prosthetic patch (n = 5) or direct suture (n = 26). The aorta was repaired with temporary subclavian artery-descending aorta (n = 3), or left atrium-femoral artery bypass (n = 2). No complication or operative death occurred after surgery. The survival rate of the patients with lung cancer who underwent SVC reconstruction at 3 year and 5 year were 26.2% and 11.2%, respectively. Five of 11 (45.5%) patients with mediastinal tumor are alive at 5 years. We concluded that extended resection for primary lung cancer or mediastinal tumor invading the SVC is acceptable operation method for some patients

Measurements of Cosmic-ray Low-energy Antiproton and Proton Spectra in a Transient Period of the Solar Field Reversal

The energy spectra of cosmic-ray low-energy antiprotons and protons have been measured by BESS in 1999 and 2000, during a period covering the solar magnetic field reversal. Based on these measurements, a sudden increase of the antiproton to proton flux ratio following the solar magnetic field reversal was observed, and it generally agrees with a drift model of the solar modulation.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, revised version accepted for publication in Phys. Development of a Model based on Evaluation Considering Explicit and Implicit Element in Multiple Criteria Decision Making

    Get PDF
The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a decision-making method for smoothly managing problems, criteria, and alternatives. AHP can be used to respond to multiple criteria, and allows for the quantification of subjective human judgments, as well as objective evaluations. In a classical AHP, a decision-maker derives a list of priorities by consciously comparing criteria and alternatives in order to deriving a comprehensive evaluation. However, when the number of criteria increases, the problem also becomes complicated and the subjective judgment of the decision-maker tends to be clouded by ambiguity and inconsistency. As the solution, this study proposes a method whereby latent elements are extracted from the data given by the decision-maker, and an evaluation is made from a different aspect based on the extracted elements. This allows for the construction of a model in which a decision is made from both explicit and implicit elements by making a final synthesis of the results obtaine d using the conventional method as well as the evaluation obtained using the method proposed in this study. As a result, we can conclude that it is possible to make a decision that is not affected by the ambiguity or inconsistency of the decision-maker
