Pilot based MMSE Channel Estimation for Spatial Modulated OFDM Systems
Due to the multifold growth in demands of multimedia services and mobile data, the request for increased channel capacity in mobile and wireless communication has been quickly increasing. Developing a wireless system with more spectral efficiency under varying channel condition is a key challenge to provide more bit rates with limited spectrum. Multiple Input Multiple Output(MIMO) system with Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) gives higher gain by using the direct and the reflected signals, thus facilitating the transmission at high data rate. An integration of Spatial Modulation (SM) with OFDM (SM OFDM) is a newly evolved transmission technique and has been suggested as a replacement for MIMO -OFDM transmission. In practical scenarios, channel estimation is significant for detecting transmitted data coherently. This paper proposes pilot based, Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) channel estimation for the SM OFDM communication system. We have focused on analyzing Symbol Error Rate (SER) and Mean Square error (MSE) under Rayleigh channel employing International Telecommunication Union (ITU) specified Vehicular model of Pilot based MMSE channel estimator using windowed Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and MMSE weighting function. Simulation output shows that proposed estimator’s SER performance lies close to that of the MMSE optimal estimator in minimizing aliasing error and suppressing channel noise by using frequency domain data windowing and time domain weighting function. Usage of the Hanning window eliminates error floor and has a compact side lobe level compared to Hamming window and Rectangular window. Hanning window has a larger MSE at low Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) values and decreases with high SNR values. It is concluded that data windowing technique can minimize the side lobe level and accordingly minimize channel estimation error when interpolation is done. MMSE weighting suppresses channel noise and improves estimation performance. Since Inverse Discrete Fourier Transform(IDFT)/DFT transforms can be implemented with fast algorithms Inverse Fast Fourier Transform( IFFT)/Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) computational complexity can be remarkably reduced
Evaluation of cephalosporins utilization and compliance with reference to the hospital antibiotic policy of an Indian tertiary care hospital
Background: Emergence of bacterial resistance in hospital settings due to the liberal use of antibiotics which led to an altered impact on its therapeutic efficacy and outcome, thereby increasing the treatment costs in patients. In this regard the study aims to evaluate the cephalosporins utilization and compliance to the hospital antibiotic policy in general medicine ward. Methods: A prospective observational study was carried out over an eleven-month period in patients prescribed with cephalosporins. Clinical data of inpatients were collected and evaluated by using World Health Organization (WHO) core prescribing indicators and defined daily dose per 100 bed-days. The comparison between the cephalosporins prescribed in the chart records to the recommendations mentioned in the institutional antibiotic policy v.2.0, help to determine the deviations in their usage pattern. Results: A total of 370 patients were enrolled in the study, of which 54.6% were females. Cephalosporins were empirically prescribed in 240 (64.9%) cases. The average number of total antibiotics and cephalosporins per encounter was 1.6 and 1 respectively. Among the total antibiotics, 63.7% were cephalosporins. Third generation cephalosporins (98.4%) were commonly prescribed, with ceftriaxone (93%) in parenteral form for respiratory tract infections (31.9%). Total parenteral antibiotics prescribed were found to be 68.8% of which 88.6% were cephalosporins. Utilization pattern of cephalosporins amounted to be 4.95 DDD/100 bed-days. Overall compliance was achieved in 191 (51.6%) prescriptions. Conclusions: The rate of prescribing of cephalosporins was marginally high. There was a low rate of compliance towards policy which reflects the urgent need for repetitive intervention to comply antibiotic policy

Tissue-Resident Macrophages Are Locally Programmed for Silent Clearance of Apoptotic Cells
Although apoptotic cells (ACs) contain nucleic acids that can be recognized by Toll-like receptors (TLRs), engulfment of ACs does not initiate inflammation in healthy organisms. Here we identified macrophage populations that continually engulf ACs in distinct tissues and found that these macrophages share characteristics compatible with immunologically silent clearance of ACs; such characteristics include high expression of AC recognition receptors, low expression of TLR9, and reduced TLR responsiveness to nucleic acids. Removal of the macrophages from tissues resulted in loss of many of these characteristics and the ability to generate inflammatory responses to AC-derived nucleic acids, suggesting that cues from the tissue microenvironment program macrophages for silent AC clearance. The transcription factors KLF2 and KLF4 control the expression of many genes within this AC clearance program. The coordinated expression of AC receptors with genes that limit responses to nucleic acids might ensure maintenance of homeostasis and thus represent a central feature of tissue macrophages
Sequential activation of two pathogen-sensing pathways required for type I interferon expression and resistance to an acute DNA virus infection
Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9), its adaptor MyD88, the downstream transcription factor interferon regulatory factor 7 (IRF7), and type I interferons (IFN-I) are all required for resistance to infection with ectromelia virus (ECTV). However, it is not known how or in which cells these effectors function to promote survival. Here, we showed that after infection with ECTV, the TLR9-MyD88-IRF7 pathway was necessary in CD11c(+) cells for the expression of proinflammatory cytokines and the recruitment of inflammatory monocytes (iMos) to the draining lymph node (dLN). In the dLN, the major producers of IFN-I were infected iMos, which used the DNA sensor-adaptor STING to activate IRF7 and nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) signaling to induce the expression of IFN-α and IFN-β, respectively. Thus, in vivo, two pathways of DNA pathogen sensing act sequentially in two distinct cell types to orchestrate resistance to a viral disease
