Superlensing properties of one-dimensional dielectric photonic crystals

We present the experimental observation of the superlensing effect in a slab of a one-dimensional photonic crystal made of tilted dielectric elements. We show that this flat lens can achieve subwavelength resolution in different frequency bands. We also demonstrate that the introduction of a proper corrugation on the lens surface can dramatically improve both the transmission and the resolution of the imaged signal.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure

Shin, Cin, and Jinn in far east Asian, central east Asian, and middle eastern cultures : case studies in transethnic communication by exchange of terminology for elementary spiritual concepts of ethic groups

Methodology and Objects: Methodologically, from a diachronic linguistics perspective regarding the concept of the shin, spirits in folk belief in China and neighbouring cultures, we compare texts that comprise meanings a) historically in the local language and b) compared to the meanings of equivalent terms in languages of other cultures. Comparing sources of this belief, we examine if and how the shin belief can serve as an example of communication across cultural borders including practical forms of worshipping. Argumentation: We argue that the concept of the shin is across cultural and national borders a result from folk culture transcending political or cultural borders transmitted via migration of ethnic groups. Although similar, mind concepts of different cultures and groups never melted; evidence for this independence gives the Islamic distinctive separation between shin and jinn in this area in the Chinese Quran and other spiritual Chinese writings. On the other hand, the practice of worshipping is similar. Conclusions: A spiritual concept like shin varies in practice in different areas. Central Asia as the melting pot of Chinese and Middle East culture shows the cultural practice of Shamanism with shin belief, complex mind concepts like in Daoism, and religions incorporating shin belief (Islam). Observed changes in the particular local languages show the continuity of the local set of meanings. Multilingual and multicultural areas such as Central Asia rather integrate new words to increase their thesaurus with new meanings than to change the set of previous existing meanings in the languages. Arabic as a language of conquerors in Central Asia is a typical example for such a language that serves as a tool to set up new meanings

USING SHIN LENGTH TO DETERMINE KICK PLATE POSITION OPTIMIZES SELECT SWIM START MECHANICS IN ELITE SWIMMERS

    Get PDF
The track start kick plate position is often decided by the level of comfort of the swimmer. The purpose of this study was to use shin length as a measure to determine kick plate position and effects on performance. 20 elite swimmers performed 3 starts at 3 kick plate distances (\u3c shin length, shin length, and \u3e shin length). Differences in reaction time, block phase time (BT), flight phase time, flight distance, underwater phase time, time to the 15 m mark, knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion angles were examined between the positions. BT was significantly different, (F(2,38)=4.264, p=.026). BT was lower when the kick plate distance was one shin’s length versus \u3c shin length (0.691+0.055 vs 0.715+0.056 sec) and \u3e shin length (0.691+0.055 vs 0.698+0.056 sec), p\u3c.05. Shin length is a quick and individualized measure that can be used by coaches to set the kick plate position without compromising performance

Slim Disk Model for Soft X-Ray Excess and Variability of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies

    Get PDF
Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) exhibit extreme soft X-ray excess and large variability. We argue that both features can be basically accounted for by the slim disk model. We assume that a central black-hole mass in NLS1 is relatively small, M1057MM \sim 10^{5-7}M_\odot, and that a disk shines nearly at the Eddington luminosity, LEL_{\rm E}. Then, the disk becomes a slim disk and exhibits the following distinctive signatures: (1) The disk luminosity (particularly of X-rays) is insensitive to mass-flow rates, M˙\dot M, since the generated energy is partly carried away to the black hole by trapped photons in accretion flow. (2) The spectra are multi-color blackbody. The maximum blackbody temperature is Tbb0.2(M/105M)1/4T_{\rm bb} \simeq 0.2(M/10^5 M_\odot)^{-1/4} keV, and the size of the blackbody emitting region is small, r_{\rm bb} \lsim 3 r_{\rm S} (with rSr_{\rm S} being Schwarzschild radius) even for a Schwarzschild black hole. (3) All the ASCA observation data of NLS1s fall onto the region of M˙/(LE/c2)>10\dot M/(L_{\rm E}/c^2)>10 (with LEL_{\rm E} being the Eddington luminosity) on the (rbb,Tbbr_{\rm bb},T_{\rm bb}) plane, supporting our view that a slim disk emits soft X-rays at LE\sim L_{\rm E} in NLS1s. (4) Magnetic energy can be amplified, at most, up to the equipartition value with the trapped radiation energy which greatly exceeds radiation energy emitted from the disk. Hence, energy release by consecutive magnetic reconnection will give rise to substantial variability in soft X-ray emission.Comment: 9 pages LaTeX including 4 figures, accepted to PASJ. e-mail to [email protected]

EFFECTS OF STANDARDIZING KICK PLATE POSITION ON TRACK START BIOMECHANICS IN ELITE SWIMMERS

Kick plate position in the track start is arbitrary but may influence performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of standardizing kick plate position based on shin length. 15 elite swimmers performed 3 starts at 3 kick plate positions (\u3c shin length, shin length, and \u3e shin length). Differences in reaction time (RT), block phase time, flight phase time, flight distance, underwater phase time, and time to the 15 m mark were examined between kick plate positions. Only RT was significantly different, (F(2,28)=4.713, p=.017). RT was lower when the kick plate distance was one shin’s length versus \u3c shin length (0.173+0.034vs 0.194+0.061 sec) and \u3e shin length (0.173+0.034 vs 0.195+0.047 sec),
