    Equilibrium or Simple Rule at Wimbledon? An Empirical Study

    We follow Walker and Wooders’(2001) empirical analysis to collect and study a broader data set in tennis, including male, female and junior matches. We find that there is mixed evidence in support of the minimax hypothesis. Granted, the plays in our data pass all the tests in Walker and Wooders (2001). However, we argue that not only the test on equal winning probabilities may lack power, but also the current serve choices may depend on past serve choices, the performance of past serve choices, or the time that the game has elapsed. We therefore examine the role that simple rules may play in determining the plays. For a significant number of top tennis players, some simple low-information rules outperform the minimax hypothesis. By comparing junior players with adult players, we find that the former tend to adopt simpler rules.     Patterns and Trends Among Intimate Partner Homicide Cases: An Analysis by Victim’s Sex and Race/ethnicity

    Data suggest sex and race/ethnicity disparities in intimate partner homicide (IPH) and different trends in the IPH rates over time by sex and racial/ethnic groups. It is, however, less clear how to explain the disparities using the existing literature. This dissertation investigates the patterns and trends among IPH cases with a focus on differences within and between victims’ sex and race/ethnicity subgroups using the National Violent Death Reporting System, Restricted Access Database (NVDRS-RAD). Data were linked to Census and policy data using the geographic indicator in the NVDRS-RAD. Latent class analysis (LCA) and mixed-effects modeling were performed to identify patterns of case characteristics of IPHs and to investigate the differential impacts of policies on subgroups over time. The findings suggest heterogeneity in IPHs and distinct factors of the IPH rate by victim’s identity markers, underscoring the utility of intersectionality frame in analyzing social policies.     Septic Shock after Conservative Management for Placenta Accreta

    SummaryObjectiveThe rate of placenta accreta has risen in the last three decades due to the increasing rate of cesarean section. Placenta accreta usually results in severe postpartum hemorrhage requiring massive blood transfusion and postpartum hysterectomy. Conservative treatment is an alternative in selected patients to preserve fertility and decrease postpartum hemorrhage, but the risks of conservative treatment have seldom been described.Case ReportA 39-year-old woman with placenta accreta diagnosed during cesarean section was treated conservatively. Persistent puerperal fever with leukocytosis developed during the postpartum period in spite of long-term antibiotic treatment. Evacuation of the retained placenta resulted in septic shock, which occurred immediately after dilatation and curettage. An uneventful recovery was achieved after use of strong antibiotics and fluid challenge.ConclusionAt present, there is no consensus about the optimal treatment for placenta accreta. Conservative treatment appears to be an alternative in selected patients, but the complications such as sepsis should be carefully identified and appropriately managed

    We study structural symmetries of two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals with anisotropic unit cells, including square- and rectangular-lattices with orientationally modulated elliptic motifs, and a compound structure consisting of circles with sixfold rotational symmetry and elliptical lines with twofold symmetry, which are created through elastic deformation of a single elastomeric membrane with circular pores. We then investigate the photonic bandgap (PBG) properties of the corresponding 2D Si posts and their tolerance to the structural deviation. We find that in the compound structure the overall PBGs are dominated by the sublattice with a higher symmetry, while the total symmetry is determined by the one with a lower symmetry

    Exploring the value co-destruction model for on-line deviant behaviors of hotel customers

    © 2019 Elsevier Ltd This study aims to build a value co-destruction model by exploring the online deviant behavior of hotel customers. Desire for revenge and desire for recovery are considered mediators. Hotel guests in notable Taiwan locations were surveyed via the Internet (no. = 601 valid responses). This study finds that negative emotion indirectly impacts negative electronic word of mouth (eWOM) with desire for revenge as a mediator. Furthermore, desire for recovery has the potential to mitigate the impact of negative emotion on negative eWOM. However, the desire for recovery is less intense than the desire for revenge. Based on these findings, this study concludes that emotion, by itself, does not result in action. Respondents only commit negative eWOM because they want to hurt the firm that wronged them. Respondents are also willing to entertain the idea of service recovery. However, desire for revenge is a stronger mediating factor

    The genome sequence of Salmonella enterica serovar Choleraesuis, a highly invasive and resistant zoonotic pathogen

    Salmonella enterica serovar Choleraesuis (S.Choleraesuis), a highly invasive serovar among non-typhoidal Salmonella, usually causes sepsis or extra-intestinal focal infections in humans. S.Choleraesuis infections have now become particularly difficult to treat because of the emergence of resistance to multiple antimicrobial agents. The 4.7 Mb genome sequence of a multidrug-resistant S.Choleraesuis strain SC-B67 was determined. Genome wide comparison of three sequenced Salmonella genomes revealed that more deletion events occurred in S.Choleraesuis SC-B67 and S.Typhi CT18 relative to S.Typhimurium LT2. S.Choleraesuis has 151 pseudogenes, which, among the three Salmonella genomes, include the highest percentage of pseudogenes arising from the genes involved in bacterial chemotaxis signal-transduction pathways. Mutations in these genes may increase smooth swimming of the bacteria, potentially allowing more effective interactions with and invasion of host cells to occur. A key regulatory gene of TetR/AcrR family, acrR, was inactivated through the introduction of an internal stop codon resulting in overexpression of AcrAB that appears to be associated with ciprofloxacin resistance. While lateral gene transfer providing basic functions to allow niche expansion in the host and environment is maintained during the evolution of different serovars of Salmonella, genes providing little overall selective benefit may be lost rapidly. Our findings suggest that the formation of pseudogenes may provide a simple evolutionary pathway that complements gene acquisition to enhance virulence and antimicrobial resistance in S.Choleraesuis

    Epigallocatechin-3-gallate-mediated cardioprotection by Akt/GSK-3β/caveolin signalling in H9c2 rat cardiomyoblasts

    Background: Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCg) with its potent anti-oxidative capabilities is known for its beneficialeffects ameliorating oxidative injury to cardiac cells. Although studies have provided convincing evidence tosupport the cardioprotective effects of EGCg, it remains unclear whether EGCg affect trans-membrane signalling incardiac cells. Here, we have demonstrated the potential mechanism for cardioprotection of EGCg againstH2O2-induced oxidative stress in H9c2 cardiomyoblasts.Results: Exposing H9c2 cells to H2O2 suppressed cell viability and altered the expression of adherens and gapjunction proteins with increased levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species and cytosolic Ca2+. These detrimentaleffects were attenuated by pre-treating cells with EGCg for 30 min. EGCg also attenuated H2O2-mediated cell cyclearrest at the G1-S phase through the glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β)/β-catenin/cyclin D1 signalling pathway.To determine how EGCg targets H9c2 cells, enhanced green fluorescence protein (EGFP) was ectopically expressedin these cells. EGFP-emission fluorescence spectroscopy revealed that EGCg induced dose-dependent fluorescencechanges in EGFP expressing cells, suggesting that EGCg signalling events might trigger proximity changes of EGFPexpressed in these cells.Proteomics studies showed that EGFP formed complexes with the 67 kD laminin receptor, caveolin-1 and -3,β-actin, myosin 9, vimentin in EGFP expressing cells. Using in vitro oxidative stress and in vivo myocardial ischemiamodels, we also demonstrated the involvement of caveolin in EGCg-mediated cardioprotection. In addition,EGCg-mediated caveolin-1 activation was found to be modulated by Akt/GSK-3β signalling in H2O2-induced H9c2cell injury.Conclusions: Our data suggest that caveolin serves as a membrane raft that may help mediate cardioprotectiveEGCg transmembrane signalling

    A Study of Three Sectors Employment Effects Resulting from Foreign Direct Investment- Empirical Analysis on the Data from Shanghai

    With the development of China's reform policy, China's economy has integrating into the global economy. As a result, more and more foreign capital continues to flow into China. Since 1990, foreign direct investment (FDI) was mainly concentrated in the Yangtze River Delta region, and Shanghai enjoyed strong economic strength, thanks to its abundant human resources and convenient transportation network; as these are excellent qualities for attracting foreign investment, Shanghai became one of the major cities attracting FDI. FDI has had a tremendous impact on many aspects in Shanghai, including employment. Therefore, Shanghai was chosen as the research object of this paper. This paper is organized as follows. Firstly, a theoretical analysis of the employment effects of FDI is presented. Secondly, after combining the actual utilization of FDI and employment in Shanghai, an empirical analysis of the effects of FDI on employment's quantity, employment's distribution and employment quality is carried out by collecting relevant data and establishing regression models. This study finds that while FDI does exert a positive influence on the quantity of employment in Shanghai's tertiary industry, it is not conducive to primary and secondary industries. In addition, FDI has shown positive and negative impacts on the quality of employment. Lastly, some suggestions are proposed to enhance the positive role of FDI on employment
