    NEURAL NETWORK USED FOR THE PREDICTION OF JOINT TORQUE FROM GROUND REACTION FORCE DURING COUNTER·MOVEMENT JUMP AND SQUAT JUMP

    The purpose of this study was to develop an artificial neural network (ANN) for predicting the joint torque of lower limb using solely the ground reaction force (GRF) parameters for counter-movement jump (CMJ) and squat jump (SJ). Ten sport students performed CMJ and SJ on force plate, meanwhile the kinematic data were recorded and the joint torque were calculated as experimental data by inverse dynamics. We used a fully-connected, feed-forward network comprised of one input layer, one hidden layer and one output layer trained by back propagation using Steepest Descent Method. The input parameters of ANN were relevant time variables of GRF measurement and the output parameters were joint torque. The results revealed that the ANN model fitted the experimental data well indicating that the model developed in this study is feasible in the assessment of joint torque for CMJ and SJ

    Position Control of a Serial Manipulator Using Fuzzy-PID Controllers

    This paper presents the position control of a six-axis serial manipulator by using a fuzzy-PID controller. The manipulator has six joints, and each joint is driven by a motor with an encoder for sensing the joint angle. To complete a position movement of the end-effector of the manipulator, the position coordinate first needs to be converted to a sets of joint angles by using the inverse kinematics of the manipulator, and each joint rotation is executed by a feedback control of a motor. To demonstrate the performance the fuzzy-PID controller, a PID controller and two fuzzy controllers are also applied. The results show that the fuzzy-PID controller provides a better performance with a smaller steady-state error

    Examining How Middle School Science Teachers Implement a Multimedia-enriched Problem-based Learning Environment

    This study examined how a group of ten middle school teachers implemented a technology enriched problem-based learning (PBL) environment. The goal was to understand their motivation, document their implementation techniques, and identify factors that teachers considered important in using technology-based PBL tools in their teaching. The analysis identified four factors that provided the impetus for teachers to consider the adoption of technology-based PBL instruction. These factors are (1) the PBL program addresses the teachers’ curricular needs and implementing it has campus administrative and technical support, (2) the method is aligned with teachers’ pedagogical beliefs, (3) the PBL program offers a new way of teaching and promotes the development of higher-order thinking skills, and (4) the PBL program challenges students in a captivating manner and supports the learning needs of all students. Teachers’ implementation techniques with over 1,000 sixth graders were documented in detail with regard to: 1) the teacher’s roles, 2) the student’s role, and 3) the classroom interactions during the implementation of the PBL program. In addition, a detailed description of contrasting narratives of two pairs of teachers is provided, illustrating the range of implementation techniques that can occur using the same PBL program to allow for individualized instruction to meet different students’ needs. The goal of providing detailed implementation practices is to address the lack of “how to” in PBL implementation in K-12 classrooms as indicated in the literature and offer insights and ideas to those interested in adopting and implementing PBL. Findings are discussed within the theoretical framework and implications are provided

    A protein interaction based model for schizophrenia study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Schizophrenia is a complex disease with multiple factors contributing to its pathogenesis. In addition to environmental factors, genetic factors may also increase susceptibility. In other words, schizophrenia is a highly heritable disease. Some candidate genes have been deduced on the basis of their known function with others found on the basis of chromosomal location. Individuals with multiple candidate genes may have increased risk. However it is not clear what kind of gene combinations may produce the disease phenotype. Their collective effect remains to be studied.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Most pathways except metabolic pathways are rich in protein-protein interactions (PPIs). Thus, the PPI network contains pathway information, even though the upstream-downstream relation of PPI is yet to be explored. Here we have constructed a PPI sub-network by extracting the nearest neighbour of the 36 reported candidate genes described in the literature. Although these candidate genes were discovered by different approaches, most of the proteins formed a cluster. Two major protein interaction modules were identified on the basis of the pairwise distance among the proteins in this sub-network. The large and small clusters might play roles in synaptic transmission and signal transduction, respectively, based on gene ontology annotation. The protein interactions in the synaptic transmission cluster were used to explain the interaction between the NRG1 and CACNG2 genes, which was found by both linkage and association studies. This working hypothesis is supported by the co-expression analysis based on public microarray gene expression.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>On the basis of the protein interaction network, it appears that the NRG1-triggered NMDAR protein internalization and the CACNG2 mediated AMPA receptor recruiting may act together in the glutamatergic signalling process. Since both the NMDA and AMPA receptors are calcium channels, this process may regulate the influx of Ca<sup>2+</sup>. Reducing the cation influx might be one of the disease mechanisms for schizophrenia. This PPI network analysis approach combined with the support from co-expression analysis may provide an efficient way to propose pathogenetic mechanisms for various highly heritable diseases.</p

    Childhood tuberculosis in southern Taiwan, with emphasis on central nervous system complications

    Background/PurposeChildhood tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a major public health problem in Taiwan. Taiwan remains a highly endemic area despite neonatal Bacillus Calmette–GuĂ©rin (BCG) vaccination and the availability of anti-TB therapy. The presentation is highly variable and it is often difficult to make an accurate diagnosis. This study was designed to evaluate the demographic, clinical, and laboratory findings and outcomes of TB in children with emphasis on central nervous system (CNS) complications.MethodsThe medical records of 80 children diagnosed with TB at a medical center in southern Taiwan over the past 24 years (1988–2012) were reviewed.ResultsAmong them, 48.8% (39/80) had pulmonary TB, 27.5% (22/80) had isolated extrapulmonary TB, and 23.7% (19/80) had disseminated TB. Most infected cases were aged either < 4 years or > 12 years. TB contact history was found in 42.5% (34/80) cases. Fourteen (17.5%) of the cases had CNS involvement. The most common presentations were fever (85.7%), signs of increased intracranial pressure (71.4%), drowsiness (64.3%), and focal neurological signs (57.1%). The major radiological findings were tuberculoma (50%), basilar enhancement (41.6%), infarction (41.6%), hydrocephalus (16.6%), and transverse myelitis (16.6%). The case fatality of CNS TB was 14.3% and 21.4% had neurologic sequelae.ConclusionFindings suggest that positive exposure history and suspicious clinical presentations are important clues for further confirmatory laboratory and image studies in childhood TB. CNS TB usually presented as part of disseminated TB in children. Early diagnosis and treatment may lead to favorable outcomes in CNS TB

    Anti-Fatigue Effect of Aqueous Extract of Anisomeles indica (L) Kuntze in Mice

    Purpose: To determine the anti-fatigue effect of Anisomeles indica (L.) Kuntze, an herb traditionally used for health improvement in Taiwan.Methods: Three groups (n = 10 per group) of Balb/c female mice were administered A. indica aqueous extract orally for 28 days at 125 (low dose A. indica, LA), 250 (medium dose A. indica, MA), and 500 (high dose A. indica, HA) mg/kg/day, respectively, while a control group received distilled water. After 28 days, a forced swimming test was performed, and biochemical parameters including plasma triglyceride (TG), glucose, lactate and ammonia levels related to fatigue were examined.Results: No mice died during the study period. Physical examinations did not reveal any treatmentrelated adverse effects after dosing, in terms of food and water consumption. Moreover, no obvious peptic ulcers, haemorrhage, or pathological changes in the liver or kidney were observed in A. indica treated mice, and there were no significant differences in body weight between the control and treatment groups (p &gt; 0.05). Mice treated with A. indica extract in the MA and HA groups showed significantly prolonged exhaustive swimming time (p &lt; 0.05), increased hepatic glycogen and muscle glycogen levels (p &lt; 0.05), and decreased triglyceride and plasma ammonia levels (p &lt; 0.05) in a dosedependent manner, compared with the controls. However, plasma glucose and lactic acid levels were not significantly changed (p &gt; 0.05).Conclusion: These results provide the first in vivo evidence supporting the anti-fatigue claims associated with A. indica treatment, indicating that this traditional herb may be of therapeutic use as an ergogenic and anti-fatigue agent.Keywords: Anisomeles indica, Exhaustive swimming test, Fatigue, Glycogen, Plasma ammonia, Lactic aci
