The spectral energy distribution of NGC 1275
An analysis of absolute spectral energy distributions of interstellar gas for a galaxy (NGC 1275) is presented. Infrared spectra data shows heavy reddening. It is proposed that the interstellar gas may be ionized by shock waves or by nonthermal or stellar radiation. It is suggested, that high velocity, emission-line knots are H2 regions in a Perseus cluster galaxy or intergalactic gas cloud seen in projection against NGC 1275
A review of melt and vapor growth techniques for polydiacetylene thin films for nonlinear optical applications
Methods for the growth of polydiacetylene thin films by melt and vapor growth and their subsequent polymerization are summarized. Films with random orientations were obtained when glass or quartz were used as substrates in the vapor growth process. Oriented polydiacetylene films were fabricated by the vapor deposition of diacetylene monomer onto oriented polydiacetylene on a glass substrate and its subsequent polymerization by UV light. A method for the growth of oriented thin films by a melt-shear growth process as well as a method of film growth by seeded recrstallization from the melt between glass plates, that may be applied to the growth of polydiacetylene films, are described. Moreover, a method is presented for the fabrication of single crystal thin films of polyacetylenes by irradiation of the surface of diacetylene single crystals to a depth between 100 and 2000 angstroms
A preliminary review of organic materials single crystal growth by the Czochralski technique
The growth of single crystals of organic compounds by the Czochralski method is reviewed. From the literature it is found that single crystals of benzil, a nonlinear optical material with a d sub 11 value of 11.2 + or - 1.5 x d sub 11 value of alpha quartz, has fewer dislocations than generally contained in Bridgman crystals. More perfect crystals were grown by repeated Czochralski growth. This consists of etching away the defect-containing portion of a Czochralski grown crystal and using it as a seed for further growth. Other compounds used to grow single crystals are benzophenone, 12-tricosanone (laurone), and salol. The physical properties, growth apparatus, and processing conditions presented in the literature are discussed. Moreover, some of the possible advantages of growing single crystals of organic compounds in microgravity to obtain more perfect crystals than on Earth are reviewed
The Black Hole Mass - Galaxy Bulge Relationship for QSOs in the SDSS DR3
We investigate the relationship between black hole mass and host galaxy
velocity dispersion for QSOs in Data Release 3 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
We derive black hole mass from the broad Hbeta line width and continuum
luminosity, and the bulge stellar velocity dispersion from the [OIII] narrow
line width. At higher redshifts, we use MgII and [OII] in place of Hbeta and
[OIII]. For redshifts z < 0.5, our results agree with the black hole mass -
bulge velocity dispersion relationship for nearby galaxies. For 0.5 < z < 1.2,
this relationship appears to show evolution with redshift in the sense that the
bulges are too small for their black holes. However, we find that part of this
apparent trend can be attributed to observational biases, including a Malmquist
bias involving the QSO luminosity. Accounting for these biases, we find ~0.2
dex evolution in the black hole mass-bulge velocity dispersion relationship
between now and redshift z ~ 1.Comment: Accepted by ApJ, 15 pages, 9 figure
A Laser-Guided Spinal Cord Displacement Injury in Adult Mice
Mouse models are unique for studying molecular mechanisms of neurotrauma because of the availability of various genetic modified mouse lines. For spinal cord injury (SCI) research, producing an accurate injury is essential, but it is challenging because of the small size of the mouse cord and the inconsistency of injury production. The Louisville Injury System Apparatus (LISA) impactor has been shown to produce precise contusive SCI in adult rats. Here, we examined whether the LISA impactor could be used to create accurate and graded contusive SCIs in mice. Adult C57BL/6 mice received a T10 laminectomy followed by 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8 mm displacement injuries, guided by a laser, from the dorsal surface of the spinal cord using the LISA impactor. Basso Mouse Scale (BMS), grid-walking, TreadScan, and Hargreaves analyses were performed for up to 6 weeks post-injury. All mice were euthanized at the 7th week, and the spinal cords were collected for histological analysis. Our results showed that the LISA impactor produced accurate and consistent contusive SCIs corresponding to mild, moderate, and severe injuries to the cord. The degree of injury severities could be readily determined by the BMS locomotor, grid-walking, and TreadScan gait assessments. The cutaneous hyperalgesia threshold was also significantly increased as the injury severity increased. The terminal lesion area and the spared white matter of the injury epicenter were strongly correlated with the injury severities. We conclude that the LISA device, guided by a laser, can produce reliable graded contusive SCIs in mice, resulting in severity-dependent behavioral and histopathological deficits
Magnetic field dependence of the energy of negatively charged excitons in semiconductor quantum wells
A variational calculation of the spin-singlet and spin-triplet state of a
negatively charged exciton (trion) confined to a single quantum well and in the
presence of a perpendicular magnetic field is presented. We calculated the
probability density and the pair correlation function of the singlet and
triplet trion states. The dependence of the energy levels and of the binding
energy on the well width and on the magnetic field strength was investigated.
We compared our results with the available experimental data on GaAs/AlGaAs
quantum wells and find that in the low magnetic field region (B<18 T) the
observed transition are those of the singlet and the dark triplet trion (with
angular momentum ), while for high magnetic fields (B>25 T) the dark
trion becomes optically inactive and possibly a transition to a bright triplet
trion (angular momentum ) state is observed.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures submitted to Phys. Rev.

The Jet-Driven Outflow In The Radio Galaxy SDSS J1517+3353: Implications For Double-Peaked Narrow-Line Active Galactic Nucleus
We report on the study of an intriguing active galaxy that was selected as a potential multiple supermassive black hole merger in the early-type host SDSS J151709.20+335324.7 (z = 0.135) from a complete search for double-peaked [O III] lines from the SDSS spectroscopic quasi-stellar object (QSO) database. Ground-based SDSS imaging reveals two blue structures on either side of the photometric center of the host galaxy, separated from each other by about 5.7 kpc. From a combination of SDSS fiber and Keck/HIRES long-slit spectroscopy, it is demonstrated that, in addition to these two features, a third distinct structure surrounds the nucleus of the host galaxy. All three structures exhibit highly ionized line emission with line ratios characteristic of Seyfert II active galactic nuclei. The analysis of spatially resolved emission-line profiles from the HIRES spectrum reveal three distinct kinematic subcomponents, one at rest and the other two moving at -350 km s(-1) and 500 km s(-1) with respect to the systemic velocity of the host galaxy. A comparison of imaging and spectral data confirm a strong association between the kinematic components and the spatial knots, which implies a highly disturbed and complex active region in this object. A comparative analysis of the broadband positions, colors, kinematics, and spectral properties of the knots in this system lead to two plausible explanations: (1) a multiple active galactic nucleus (AGN) produced due to a massive dry merger, or (2) a very powerful radio jet-driven outflow. Subsequent VLA radio imaging reveals a clear jet aligned with the emission-line gas, confirming the latter explanation. We use the broadband radio measurements to examine the impact of the jet on the interstellar medium of the host galaxy, and find that the energy in the radio lobes can heat a significant fraction of the gas to the virial temperature. Finally, we discuss tests that may help future surveys distinguish between jet-driven kinematics and true black-hole binaries. J1517+3353 is a remarkable laboratory for AGN feedback and warrants deeper follow-up study. In the Appendix, we present high-resolution radio imaging of a second AGN with double-peaked [O III] lines, SDSS J112939.78+605742.6, which shows a sub-arcsecond radio jet. If the double-peaked nature of the narrow lines in radio-loud AGNs are generally due to radio jet interactions, we suggest that extended radio structure should be expected in most of such systems.NSF AST-0507483, AST-0808133University of Texas at AustinAlfred P. Desequilibrio del ciclo del azufre y cambio ambiental durante el Período Ediacárico
A different approach is proposed here to solve the problem of negative δ13C excursions during the Ediacaran, by viewing them in terms of a linked carbon-sulfur-oxygen system, whereby changes in oxidant dynamics caused an excess of organic carbon oxidation over burial, resulting in a smaller DOM reservoir. The amount of oxidant required to achieve a deep negative carbon isotope excursion through net organic carbon oxidation may reasonably result from basin-scale evaporite dissolution.
