State-space self-tuner for on-line adaptive control
Dynamic systems, such as flight vehicles, satellites and space stations, operating in real environments, constantly face parameter and/or structural variations owing to nonlinear behavior of actuators, failure of sensors, changes in operating conditions, disturbances acting on the system, etc. In the past three decades, adaptive control has been shown to be effective in dealing with dynamic systems in the presence of parameter uncertainties, structural perturbations, random disturbances and environmental variations. Among the existing adaptive control methodologies, the state-space self-tuning control methods, initially proposed by us, are shown to be effective in designing advanced adaptive controllers for multivariable systems. In our approaches, we have embedded the standard Kalman state-estimation algorithm into an online parameter estimation algorithm. Thus, the advanced state-feedback controllers can be easily established for digital adaptive control of continuous-time stochastic multivariable systems. A state-space self-tuner for a general multivariable stochastic system has been developed and successfully applied to the space station for on-line adaptive control. Also, a technique for multistage design of an optimal momentum management controller for the space station has been developed and reported in. Moreover, we have successfully developed various digital redesign techniques which can convert a continuous-time controller to an equivalent digital controller. As a result, the expensive and unreliable continuous-time controller can be implemented using low-cost and high performance microprocessors. Recently, we have developed a new hybrid state-space self tuner using a new dual-rate sampling scheme for on-line adaptive control of continuous-time uncertain systems
Precise computer controlled positioning of robot end effectors using force sensors
A thorough study of combined position/force control using sensory feedback for a one-dimensional manipulator model, which may count for the spacecraft docking problem or be extended to the multi-joint robot manipulator problem, was performed. The additional degree of freedom introduced by the compliant force sensor is included in the system dynamics in the design of precise position control. State feedback based on the pole placement method and with integral control is used to design the position controller. A simple constant gain force controller is used as an example to illustrate the dependence of the stability and steady-state accuracy of the overall position/force control upon the design of the inner position controller. Supportive simulation results are also provided
Thermoelastic Damping in Micro- and Nano-Mechanical Systems
The importance of thermoelastic damping as a fundamental dissipation
mechanism for small-scale mechanical resonators is evaluated in light of recent
efforts to design high-Q micrometer- and nanometer-scale electro-mechanical
systems (MEMS and NEMS). The equations of linear thermoelasticity are used to
give a simple derivation for thermoelastic damping of small flexural vibrations
in thin beams. It is shown that Zener's well-known approximation by a
Lorentzian with a single thermal relaxation time slightly deviates from the

Nonlinear and conventional biosignal analyses applied to tilt table test for evaluating autonomic nervous system and autoregulation

Currently, the analytical method based on blood pressure (BP) or heart rate (HR) changes during the TTT is linear but normal physiological modulations of BP and HR are thought to be predominately nonlinear. Therefore, this study consists of two parts: the first part is analyzing the HR during TTT which is compared to three methods to distinguish normal controls and subjects with ANS dysfunction. The first method is power spectrum density (PSD), while the second method is detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), and the third method is multiscale entropy (MSE) to calculate the complexity of system. The second part of the study is to analyze BP and cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) changes during TTT. Two measures were used to compare the results, namely correlation coefficient analysis (nMxa) and MSE. The first part of this study has concluded that the ratio of the low frequency power to total power of PSD, and MSE methods are better than DFA to distinguish the difference between normal controls and patients groups. While in the second part, the nMxa of the three stages moving average window is better than the nMxa with all three stages together. Coarse-Graining the Lin-Maldacena Geometries
The Lin-Maldacena geometries are nonsingular gravity duals to degenerate
vacuum states of a family of field theories with SU(2|4) supersymmetry. In this
note, we show that at large N, where the number of vacuum states is large,
there is a natural `macroscopic' description of typical states, giving rise to
a set of coarse-grained geometries. For a given coarse-grained state, we can
associate an entropy related to the number of underlying microstates. We find a
simple formula for this entropy in terms of the data that specify the geometry.
We see that this entropy function is zero for the original microstate
geometries and maximized for a certain ``typical state'' geometry, which we
argue is the gravity dual to the zero-temperature limit of the thermal state of
the corresponding field theory. Finally, we note that the coarse-grained

Quantum geometry and gravitational entropy
Most quantum states have wavefunctions that are widely spread over the
accessible Hilbert space and hence do not have a good description in terms of a
single classical geometry. In order to understand when geometric descriptions
are possible, we exploit the AdS/CFT correspondence in the half-BPS sector of
asymptotically AdS_5 x S^5 universes. In this sector we devise a
"coarse-grained metric operator" whose eigenstates are well described by a
single spacetime topology and geometry. We show that such half-BPS universes
have a non-vanishing entropy if and only if the metric is singular, and that
the entropy arises from coarse-graining the geometry. Finally, we use our
entropy formula to find the most entropic spacetimes with fixed asymptotic

Pressure-induced structural and electronic transition in KTb(MoO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub> through Raman and optical studies
Raman and optical absorption studies under pressure have been conducted on KTb(MoO4)2 up to 35.5 GPa. A phase transformation occurs at 2.7 GPa when the crystal is pressurized at ambient temperature in a hydrostatic pressure medium. The sample changes to a deep yellow color at the transition and visibly contracts in theα-axis direction. The color shifts to red on further pressure increase. The Raman spectral features and the X-ray powder pattern change abruptly at the transition indicating a structural change. The pressure-induced transition appears to be a property of the layer-type alkali rare earth dimolybdates. However, the color change at the transition in KTb(MoO4)2 is rather unusual and is attributed to a valence change in Tb initiated by the structural transition and consequent intervalence charge transfer between Tb and Mo.In situ high pressure X-ray diffraction data suggest that phase II could be orthorhombic with a unit cell having 3 to 4% smaller volume than that of phase I
Magnetic Behavior of a Mixed Ising Ferrimagnetic Model in an Oscillating Magnetic Field
The magnetic behavior of a mixed Ising ferrimagnetic system on a square
lattice, in which the two interpenetrating square sublattices have spins +- 1/2
and spins +-1,0, in the presence of an oscillating magnetic field has been
studied with Monte Carlo techniques. The model includes nearest and
next-nearest neighbor interactions, a crystal field and the oscillating
external field. By studying the hysteretic response of this model to an
oscillating field we found that it qualitatively reproduces the increasing of
the coercive field at the compensation temperature observed in real
ferrimagnets, a crucial feature for magneto-optical applications. This behavior
is basically independent of the frequency of the field and the size of the
system. The magnetic response of the system is related to a dynamical
transition from a paramagnetic to a ferromagnetic phase and to the different
temperature dependence of the relaxation times of both sublattices.Comment: 10 figures. To be published in Phys.Rev
