ObjectivesTo describe and evaluate disposable saliva collection kit for rapid, reliable, and reproducible collection of saliva samples.MethodsThe saliva collection kit comprised of a saliva absorbent swab and an extractor unit was used to retrieve whole saliva samples from 10 subjects. The accuracy and precision of the extracted volumes (3, 10, and 30 μl) were compared to similar volumes drawn from control samples obtained by passive drool. Additionally, the impact of kit collection method on subsequent immunoassay results was verified by assessing salivary cortisol levels in the samples and comparing them to controls.ResultsThe recovered volumes for the whole saliva samples were 3.85 ± 0.28, 10.79 ± 0.95, and 31.18 ± 1.72 μl, respectively (CV = 8.76%) and 2.91 ± 0.19, 9.75 ± 0.43, and 29.64 ± 0.91 μl, respectively, (CV = 6.36%) for the controls. There was a close correspondence between the salivary cortisol levels from the saliva samples obtained by the collection kit and the controls (R(2)  > 0.96).ConclusionsThe disposable saliva collection kit allows accurate and repeatable collection of fixed amounts of whole saliva and does not interfere with subsequent measurements of salivary cortisol. The simple collection process, lack of elaborate specimen recovery steps, and the short turnaround time (<3 min) should render the kit attractive to test subjects and researchers alike

Bilateral simultaneous neck femur fracture following domestic fall in an elderly patient: a rare case report

AbstractSimultaneous bilateral neck femur fracture is a rare entity that has been associated with underlying bone disease, various metabolic diseases, high-energy trauma, and seizure disorders. Its occurrence following minimal trauma is very rare. This article presents the case of a 66-year-old female who sustained bilateral intracapsular fracture neck femur following a slip and fall at home. Single-stage bilateral cemented total hip replacement was done using a direct lateral approach with alternate right and left lateral positions. The authors report a satisfactory outcome, with Harris hip score of 98 at one year, which persisted until her last follow-up at 30 months

Objective: To study the edema causing factors in hypertensive, amlodipine-induced pedal edema patients. Methods: The present was a prospective, observational study. A total of one hundred and twenty-four essential hypertensive patients, of either gender attending the outpatient department of cardiology and medicine, were recruited for this study. Out of the 124 patients, 62 were of the amlodipine-induced pedal edema [AIPE] group and other 62 patients were amlodipine-treated non-edema [ATNE] group. All the patients were receiving a dosage of amlodipine 5 mg/day. All recruited patients completed the study. The present study conducted at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. Results: The vanillyl mandelic acid (VMA) (mean±SD) 7.08±2.3 mg/24 h and 4.9±1.7 mg/24 h in AIPE and ATNE groups respectively. Blood pressure (BP) and VMA was higher in AIPE group than the ATNE group (p<0.001). Pulse rate (PR), serum proteins, creatinine, sodium, osmolality, did not show any significant difference between the two study groups. Conclusion: In essential hypertensive patients with AIPE group presented with a higher VMA level than the ATNE group. The elevated catecholamine's possibly the causative factor for AIPE

OPTIMIZED AND CONVERGED PACKET CORE GATEWAY SELECTION FOR 5G USER IN E-UTRAN COVERAGE

Mobile service providers are deploying 5G technology with network slicing to enable different business use cases. Presented herein are techniques to implement network slicing. In a first technique, a 1:1 mapping is made between the s-Network Slice Selection Assistance Information (NSSAI) subscribed by the User Equipment (UE) in the 5G network to the UE usage type (UUT) in the Home Subscriber Server (HSS), along with the subscribed priority of the slices per UE. This is sent to the Mobility Management Entity (MME). In a second technique, an N:1 mapping between is made between the s-NSSAI\u27s subscribed by the UE in the 5G network to the UUT in the HSS, along with the subscribed priority of the slices per UE. The same is sent to the MME as a unique UUT value which is an operator specific value

Dosage, gender, and genetic susceptibility to the effects of alcohol remained only partially elucidated. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge of the mechanisms underlying the role of alcohol in liver and gastrointestinal cancers. In addition, two recent pathways- DNA repair and TGF-β signaling which provide new insights into alcohol in the regulation of cancers and stem cells are also discussed here

Next-generation Paclitaxel-nanoparticle formulation for pancreatic cancer treatment

Pancreatic cancer (PanCa) is a major cause of cancer-related death due to limited therapeutic options. As pancreatic tumors are highly desmoplastic, they prevent appropriate uptake of therapeutic payloads. Thus, our objective is to develop a next-generation nanoparticle system for treating PanCa. We generated a multi-layered Pluronic F127 and polyvinyl alcohol stabilized and poly-L-lysine coated paclitaxel loaded poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticle formulation (PPNPs). This formulation exhibited optimal size (~160 nm) and negative Zeta potential (−6.02 mV), efficient lipid raft mediated internalization, pronounced inhibition in growth and metastasis in vitro, and in chemo-naive and chemo-exposed orthotopic xenograft mouse models. Additionally, PPNPs altered nanomechanical properties of PanCa cells as suggested by the increased elastic modulus in nanoindentation analyses. Immunohistochemistry of orthotopic tumors demonstrated decreased expression of tumorigenic and metastasis associated proteins (ki67, vimentin and slug) in PPNPs treated mice. These results suggest that PPNPs represent a viable and robust platform for (PanCa)
