Seasonal Occurrence of the Sod Webworm Moths (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) of Ohio

While nearly 100 species of sod webworms are known to occur in North America, the species complex and seasonal occurrence of these moths has been documented in relatively few states. For Ohio, there is little published record of the sod webworm species complex, and the seasonal occurrence of only a few economically important species has been documented. Using black light traps, sod web worm adult flight activity was monitored over the course of three to five years at four different locations throughout Ohio. In this paper we report the seasonal occurrence of sod web worms species captured at these locations. These data provide a historical benchmark of sod webworm species diversity, local abundance, and seasonal occurrence in Ohio

Trapping \u3ci\u3ePhyllophaga \u3c/i\u3espp. (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) in the United States and Canada using sex attractants.

The sex pheromone of the scarab beetle, Phyllophaga anxia, is a blend of the methyl esters of two amino acids, L-valine and L-isoleucine. A field trapping study was conducted, deploying different blends of the two compounds at 59 locations in the United States and Canada. More than 57,000 males of 61 Phyllophaga species (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) were captured and identified. Three major findings included: (1) widespread use of the two compounds [of the 147 Phyllophaga (sensu stricto) species found in the United States and Canada, males of nearly 40% were captured]; (2) in most species intraspecific male response to the pheromone blends was stable between years and over geography; and (3) an unusual pheromone polymorphism was described from P. anxia. Populations at some locations were captured with L-valine methyl ester alone, whereas populations at other locations were captured with L-isoleucine methyl ester alone. At additional locations, the L-valine methyl ester-responding populations and the L-isoleucine methyl ester-responding populations were both present, producing a bimodal capture curve. In southeastern Massachusetts and in Rhode Island, in the United States, P. anxia males were captured with blends of L-valine methyl ester and L-isoleucine methyl ester

    Mealybugs

Common Names. Turfgrass mealybugs, Rhodesgrass mealybug, buffalograss mealybugs, etc. Scientific Classification. (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae). Origin and Distribution. Mealybugs occur worldwide and are widely distributed throughout the United States. In 1967, McKenzie recognized 46 genera of mealybugs in North America. Thirty-seven species within these genera were associated with grasses. Description. Mealybugs are small, oval insects that are closely related to scale insects. Nymphs and adult females range in color from dark pink to light yellow and are usually covered with a white, waxy secretion. Some species have a series of short, waxy filaments projecting from the sides of the body. Individuals range in length from 0.008 in (0.2 mm) for early instar nymphs to over 0.20 in (5.0 mm) for adult females of certain species

First Report of Annual Bluegrass Weevil, \u3ci\u3eListronotus maculicollis\u3c/i\u3e, Damage in Ohio

    Get PDF
Annual bluegrass weevil [Listronotus maculicollis (Kirby) (1)] larvae, pupae, and adults were recovered and identified in a sample received by the C. Wayne Ellett Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic (CWEPPDC) at Ohio State University on 19 June 2007. Damage to the approaches and collars of four golf course putting greens was detected by the superintendent of Stonewater Golf Club, Highland Heights, OH (a suburb of Cleveland) during the week of 11 June 2007. The superintendent suspected damage from the larvae of the black turfgrass ataenius, Ataenius spretulus (1). Insecticide applications applied to suppress black turfgrass ataenius did not provide adequate levels of control. A sample was sent to the CWEPPDC for analysis where it was determined that the symptoms were not caused by a pathogen. Adult annual bluegrass weevils were observed in the samples. Mature larvae, pupae, callow adults, and adults of L. maculicollis were subsequently identified at the golf course during a site visit on 20 June 2007

Abondance saisonnière des espèces de pyrales des prés (Lepidoptera : Crambidae) associées aux graminées à gazon au Québec

    No full text
Fifteen lawns in Quebec City and Montreal, Quebec, Canada, were sampled in 1998 and 1999 to establish the sod webworm species complex associated with turfgrass and to determine the damaging species at the larval stage. Sod webworm adults were captured with light traps from June to September. A golf cup cutter served to monitor larvae in sod with webworm damage. Eleven sod webworm species were captured with light traps in 1998 and four in 1999. Three of these species were dominant: Crambus preafectellus (silver-striped webworm), Pediasia trisecta (larger sod webworm) and Chrysoteuchia topiaria (cranberry girdler). The seasonal abundance of these species at the adult stage was established during the summer of 1998 and 1999. The cranberry girdler was the only species that caused damages to the turf
