The t-J model on a semi-infinite lattice
The hole spectral function of the t-J model on a two-dimensional
semi-infinite lattice is calculated using the spin-wave and noncrossing
approximations. In the case of small hole concentration and strong
correlations, , several near-boundary site rows appear to be depleted
of holes. The reason for this depletion is a deformation of the magnon cloud,
which surrounds the hole, near the boundary. The hole depletion in the boundary
region leads to a more complicated spectral function in the boundary row in
comparison with its bulk shape.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
An atomic clock with instability
Atomic clocks have been transformational in science and technology, leading
to innovations such as global positioning, advanced communications, and tests
of fundamental constant variation. Next-generation optical atomic clocks can
extend the capability of these timekeepers, where researchers have long aspired
toward measurement precision at 1 part in . This milestone will
enable a second revolution of new timing applications such as relativistic
geodesy, enhanced Earth- and space-based navigation and telescopy, and new
tests on physics beyond the Standard Model. Here, we describe the development
and operation of two optical lattice clocks, both utilizing spin-polarized,
ultracold atomic ytterbium. A measurement comparing these systems demonstrates
an unprecedented atomic clock instability of after
only hours of averaging
Tyrosine kinase inhibitors for the therapy of anaplastic thyroid cancer
Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is often incurable so new therapeutic approaches are needed. Tyrosine kinases inhibitors (such as imanitib, sunitinib or sorafenib) are under evaluation for the treatment of ATC. Other vascular disrupting agents, such as combretastatin A4 phosphate, and antiangiogenic agents, such as aplidin, PTK787/ZK222584 and human VEGF monoclonal antibodies (bevacizumab, cetuximab), have been evaluated. Small-molecule adenosine triphosphate competitive inhibitors directed intracellularly at EGFRs tyrosine kinase, such as erlotinib or gefitinib, are also studied. Furthermore, new molecules have been shown to be active against ATC, such as CLM94 and CLM3. However, more research is needed to finally identify therapies able to control and to cure this disease

de-Broglie Wave-Front Engineering
We propose a simple method for the deterministic generation of an arbitrary
continuous quantum state of the center-of-mass of an atom. The method's spatial
resolution gradually increases with the interaction time with no apparent
fundamental limitations. Such de-Broglie Wave-Front Engineering of the atomic
density can find applications in Atom Lithography, and we discuss possible
implementations of our scheme in atomic beam experiments.Comment: The figures' quality was improved, the text remains intact. 5 pages,

Interaction of a Magnetic Impurity with Strongly Correlated Conduction Electrons
We consider a magnetic impurity which interacts by hybridization with a
system of strongly correlated conduction electrons. The latter are described by
a Hubbard Hamiltonian. By means of a canconical transformation the charge
degrees of freedom of the magnetic impurity are eliminated. The resulting
effective Hamiltonian is investigated and various limiting cases
are considered. If the Hubbard interaction between the conduction electrons
is neglected reduces to a form obtained by the Schrieffer-Wolff
transformation, which is essentially the Kondo Hamiltonian. If is large and
the correlations are strong is changed. One modification concerns
the coefficient of the dominant exchange coupling of the magnetic impurity with
the nearest lattice site. When the system is hole doped, there is also an
antiferromagnetic coupling to the nearest neighbors of that site involving
additionally a hole. Furthermore, it is found that the magnetic impurity
attracts a hole. In the case of electron doping, double occupancies are
repelled by the impurity. In contrast to the hole-doped case, we find no
magnetic coupling which additionally involves a doubly occupied site.Comment: 16 pages, Revtex 3.
