    Family visits to libraries and bookshops: observations and implications for digital libraries

    This paper explores how families select books for leisure reading. We recruited 17 families (adults and children) for this study, and spent time with each in both bookshops and public libraries. Our research aims to add to understanding of how families interact with books and bookshelves in these places, and how digital libraries might best support the shared needs of these inter-generational users. Much of our understanding of how an eBook should look and feel comes from generalizations about books and assumptions about the needs of those individuals who read them. We explore how children and adults search and browse for books together, with specific focus on the type of information seeking tasks that families undertake and on the families’ shared search and browsing strategies. We further explore the implications of this study for the development of digital libraries for children and families

    Facilitating Pupil Thinking About Information Literacy

    Whilst information literacy is frequently taught through the imposition on learners of an established framework, this paper suggests a different approach by taking a lead from James Herring’s ideas. Specifically, it provides guidance to school-based information professionals who would like to encourage their pupils to devise their own flexible, information literacy models which are unique to them. Drawing on existing material in information science and wider thought, it proposes areas for coverage and considers how information professionals may support the dynamic process of model construction. It is recommended that those who are intent on facilitating the creation of personal information literacy models help pupils to identify the roles they take on in their lives, to reflect on the information needs that result, to ascertain the information they require in particular situations, to explore their information-seeking activities, to consider means by which information can be captured and to give thought as to how the information they have accessed may be used. This framework is, however, by no means rigid and readers are, of course, free to make their own adjustments

    Stochastic models in population biology and their deterministic analogs

    In this paper we introduce a class of stochastic population models based on "patch dynamics". The size of the patch may be varied, and this allows one to quantify the departures of these stochastic models from various mean field theories, which are generally valid as the patch size becomes very large. These models may be used to formulate a broad range of biological processes in both spatial and non-spatial contexts. Here, we concentrate on two-species competition. We present both a mathematical analysis of the patch model, in which we derive the precise form of the competition mean field equations (and their first order corrections in the non-spatial case), and simulation results. These mean field equations differ, in some important ways, from those which are normally written down on phenomenological grounds. Our general conclusion is that mean field theory is more robust for spatial models than for a single isolated patch. This is due to the dilution of stochastic effects in a spatial setting resulting from repeated rescue events mediated by inter-patch diffusion. However, discrete effects due to modest patch sizes lead to striking deviations from mean field theory even in a spatial setting.Comment: 47 pages, 9 figure

    Expression of chemokine receptors CXCR1 and CXCR2 during cardiopulmonary bypass

    AbstractObjective: This study investigated the effects of cardiopulmonary bypass on neutrophil expression of chemokine receptors, CXCR1 and CXCR2, and the β2 integrin CD11b. Methods: Ten patients undergoing coronary artery grafting with cardiopulmonary bypass were studied. Blood samples were collected preoperatively, before bypass, at termination of bypass, and 12 to 18 hours postoperatively. In vitro studies were performed on control subjects to determine changes in the surface expression of CXCR1, CXCR2, and CD11b on stimulation with interleukin 8. Receptor expression was measured by flow cytometry. Plasma levels of interleukin 8 from the patients were determined by enzyme-linked immunoassay. Results: After bypass, CXCR2 expression fell by 66% (P <.0001) and remained low postoperatively (P <.0001). CXCR1 expression persisted at preoperative levels. CD11b expression increased significantly after bypass (P <.0001), returning to prebypass levels postoperatively. In vitro studies showed a dose-related fall of both CXCR1 (P <.0001) and CXCR2 expression (P <.0001) and a significant rise in CD11b expression (P <.0001). Plasma interleukin 8 increased significantly after bypass (P <.0001), remaining elevated 12 to 18 hours postoperatively (P =.02). Correlations between interleukin 8 levels and CXCR2 expression (P <.0001) and CD11b expression (P <.03) were demonstrated. Conclusions: CXCR2 expression is significantly down-regulated after bypass; in contrast, CXCR1 expression remains unchanged. In addition, whereas interleukin 8 is an important determinant of both CXCR1 and CXCR2 expression in vitro, it only correlates with CXCR2 and CD11b expression in vivo.     Unsupervised domain adaptation in brain lesion segmentation with adversarial networks

    Significant advances have been made towards building accu- rate automatic segmentation systems for a variety of biomedical applica- tions using machine learning. However, the performance of these systems often degrades when they are applied on new data that differ from the training data, for example, due to variations in imaging protocols. Man- ually annotating new data for each test domain is not a feasible solution. In this work we investigate unsupervised domain adaptation using ad- versarial neural networks to train a segmentation method which is more invariant to differences in the input data, and which does not require any annotations on the test domain. Specifically, we learn domain-invariant features by learning to counter an adversarial network, which attempts to classify the domain of the input data by observing the activations of the segmentation network. Furthermore, we propose a multi-connected domain discriminator for improved adversarial training. Our system is evaluated using two MR databases of subjects with traumatic brain in- juries, acquired using different scanners and imaging protocols. Using our unsupervised approach, we obtain segmentation accuracies which are close to the upper bound of supervised domain adaptation

    'I just want to watch the match': a practitioner's reflective account of men's health themed match day events at an English Premier League football club

    This study reflects on the effectiveness and delivery of a series of health themed match day events at an English Premier League Football Club which aimed to create awareness and motivate men to adopt recommended health behaviours. A range of marketing techniques and activities were adopted within a targeted space and time to increase men's exposure to health information. The first author adopted a practitioner-cum-researcher role and was immersed in the planning and delivery of the events utilising the principles of ethnography. Data were predominately collated through observations and personal reflections logged via autobiographical field notes. Data were analysed through abductive reasoning. In general, men were reluctant to engage in health-related behaviours on match days. However, subtle, non-invasive approaches were deemed successful. Positive outcomes and case studies from the latter techniques are presented and suggestions for effective strategies that will better engage men in health information and behaviours are made. © 2014 © 2014 Taylor & Francis
