Suppression of local haze variations in MERIS images over turbid coastal waters for retrieval of suspended sediment concentration
Atmospheric correction over turbid waters can be problematic if atmospheric haze is spatially variable. In this case the retrieval of water quality is hampered by the fact that haze variations could be partly mistaken for variations in suspended sediment concentration (SSC). In this study we propose the suppression of local haze variations while leaving sediment variations intact. This is accomplished by a multispectral data projection (MDP) method based on a linear spectral mixing model, and applied prior to the actual standard atmospheric correction. In this linear model, the hazesediment spectral mixing was simulated by a coupled water-atmosphere radiative transfer (RT) model. As a result, local haze variations were largely suppressed and transformed into an approximately homogenous atmosphere over the MERIS top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiance scene. The suppression of local haze variations increases the number of satellite images that are still suitable for standard atmospheric correction processing and subsequent water quality analysi
Unambiguous Acquisition and Tracking Technique for General BOC Signals
This article presents a new unambiguous acquisition and tracking technique for general Binary Offset Carrier (BOC) ranging signals, which will be used in modern GPS, European Galileo system and Chinese BeiDou system. The test criterion employed in this technique is based on a synthesized correlation function which completely removes positive side peaks while keeping the sharp main peak. Simulation results indicate that the proposed technique completely removes the ambiguity threat in the acquisition process while maintaining relatively higher acquisition performance for low order BOC signals. The potential false lock points in the tracking phase for any order BOC signals are avoided by using the proposed method. Impacts of thermal noise and multipath on the proposed technique are investigated; the simulation results show that the new method allows the removal of false lock points with slightly degraded tracking performance. In addition, this method is convenient to implement via logic circuits
Acoustic waves and heating due to molecular energy transfer in an electric discharge CO laser
This paper summarizes analytical studies and the interpretation of experimental results for the compression and rarefaction waves generated in the cavity of a pulsed CO electric discharge laser. A one-dimensional analysis of acoustic waves is applied to a transversely excited laser. The influences of heating in the cathode fall, heat transfer to the cathode, flow through both the anode and cathode, and bulk heating of the plasma are included. The analysis is used to relate the bulk heating rate to observable features of the pressure and density waves. Data obtained from interferograms and reported elsewhere are used to infer the bulk heating rates in a pulsed CO laser. Results are presented for CO/Ar, CO/N2, and N2 plasmas. Comparison of the data with recent theoretical results for the heating due to electron/ neutral collisions and the anharmonic defect associated with V-V energy transfer shows substantial differences at lower values of total energy deposition. The change of heating with E/N is in fairly good agreement with predicted values
Realizing quantum controlled phase-flip gate through quantum dot in silicon slow-light photonic crystal waveguide
We propose a scheme to realize controlled phase gate between two single
photons through a single quantum dot in slow-light silicon photonic crystal
waveguide. Enhanced Purcell factor and beta factor lead to high gate fidelity
over broadband frequencies compared to cavity-assisted system. The excellent
physical integration of this silicon photonic crystal waveguide system provides
tremendous potential for large-scale quantum information processing.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Interaction between graphene and SiO2 surface
With first-principles DFT calculations, the interaction between graphene and
SiO2 surface has been analyzed by constructing the different configurations
based on {\alpha}-quartz and cristobalite structures. The single layer graphene
can stay stably on SiO2 surface is explained based on the general consideration
of configuration structures of SiO2 surface. It is also found that the oxygen
defect in SiO2 surface can shift the Fermi level of graphene down which opens
out the mechanism of hole-doping effect of graphene absorbed on SiO2 surface
observed in experiments.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure
An Efficient Algorithm by Kurtosis Maximization in Reference-Based Framework
This paper deals with the optimization of kurtosis for complex-valued signals in the independent component analysis (ICA) framework, where source signals are linearly and instantaneously mixed. Inspired by the recently proposed reference-based contrast schemes, a similar contrast function is put forward, based on which a new fast fixed-point (FastICA) algorithm is proposed. The new optimization method is similar in spirit to the former classical kurtosis-based FastICA algorithm but differs in the fact that it is much more efficient than the latter in terms of computational speed, which is significantly striking with large number of samples. The performance of this new algorithm is confirmed through computer simulations
