    Making polygons by simple folds and one straight cut

In particular, such alignments enable the cutting out of the polygon and its complement with one complete straight cut. We also show that these makeable polygons include all convex polygons possessing a line of symmetry

    Spectroscopic and computational insights on catalytic synergy in bimetallic aluminophosphate catalysts

    A combined electronic structure computational and X-ray absorption spectroscopy study was used to investigate the nature of the active sites responsible for catalytic synergy in Co-Ti bimetallic nanoporous frameworks. Probing the nature of the molecular species at the atomic level has led to the identification of a unique Co-O-Ti bond, which serves as the loci for the superior performance of the bimetallic catalyst, when compared with its analogous monometallic counterpart. The structural and spectroscopic features associated with this active site have been characterized and contrasted, with a view to affording structure property relationships, in the wider context of designing sustainable catalytic oxidations with porous solids

    Critical race theory as theoretical framework and analysis tool for population health research

    Abstract: In population health research, it is important to consider socioecological perspectives that include cultural attitudes and beliefs which permeate all levels (intrapersonal, interpersonal, institutional/community, and structural/policy). Given the specificity of target populations centered on identity -ethnic and others -it is appropriate and warranted to centralize cultural studies theories into health determinant investigations. Cultural studies, which focus explicitly on identity exploration and impacts, have much to contribute to health research. In accordance with the transdisciplinary nature of population health and bearing in mind the significant role of ethnic identity in health outcomes, it is beneficial to utilize critical race theory (CRT) as a theoretical framework and analysis tool for population health research. This article will: (1) briefly overview a recent mental health study employing CRT, and a commentary that emphasizes how CRT can contribute to the sociology of mental health; and (2) propose ways CRT can be used in psychosocial health research

    Ten questions concerning the microbiomes of buildings

    Buildings represent habitats for microorganisms that can have direct or indirect effects on the quality of our living spaces, health, and well-being. Over the last ten years, new research has employed sophisticated tools, including DNA sequencing-based approaches, to study microbes found in buildings and the overall built environment. These investigations have catalyzed new insights into and questions about the microbes that surround us in our daily lives. The emergence of the “microbiology of the built environment” field has required bridging disciplines, including microbiology, ecology, building science, architecture, and engineering. Early insights have included a fuller characterization of sources of microbes within buildings, important processes that structure the distributions and abundances of microbes, and a greater appreciation of the role that occupants can have on indoor microbiology. This ongoing work has also demonstrated that traditional culture- and microscopy-based approaches for studying microbiology vastly underestimate the types and quantity of microbes present in environmental samples. We offer ten questions that highlight important lessons learned regarding the microbiology of buildings and suggest future areas of investigation
