Exploratory Thermal-mechanical Fatigue Results for Rene' 80 in Ultrahigh Vacuum

A limited study was conducted of the use of strainage partitioning for predicting the thermalmechanical fatigue life of cast nickel-base superalloy Rene' 80. The fatigue lives obtained by combined inphase thermal and mechanical strain cycling between 400 C (752 F) and 1000 C (1802 F) in an ultrahigh vacuum were considerably shorter than those represented by the four basic partitioned inelastic strainrange fatigue life relationships established previously for this alloy at 871 C (1600 F) and 1000 C (1832 F) in an ultrahigh vacuum. This behavior was attributed to the drastic decrease in ductility with decreasing temperature for this alloy. These results indicated that the prediction of the thermal-mechanical fatigue life of Rene' 80 by the method of strainrange partioning may be improved if based on the four basic fatigue life relationships determined at a lower temperature in the thermal-mechanical strain cycle

    Bulk-sensitive Photoemission of Mn5Si3

We have carried out a bulk-sensitive high-resolution photoemission experiment on Mn5Si3. The measurements are performed for both core level and valence band states. The Mn core level spectra are deconvoluted into two components corresponding to different crystallographic sites. The asymmetry of each component is of noticeable magnitude. In contrast, the Si 2p spectrum shows a simple Lorentzian shape with low asymmetry. The peaks of the valence band spectrum correspond well to the peak positions predicted by the former band calculation.Comment: To be published in: Solid State Communication

Study of the Kinetics of Polymerization of Isoprene in Aqueous Solutions of Emulsifiers and in Emulsions

Abstract It has been established earlier that polymerization in aqueous solutions of emulsifiers takes place in the water or in the micellae of the emulsifier, depending on the solubility of the monomer and the initiator. The question of the topochemical properties of polymerization in emulsions has not yet been definitively explained. In a number of studies, the hypothesis was advanced that the process of emulsion polymerization takes place in the micellae of the emulsifier, according to the degree of conversion of the micellae into polymer-monomer particles, with the monomer dissolved in the polymer. In order to explain further the mechanism of emulsion polymerization, the kinetics of polymerization of isoprene in water, in solutions of emulsifier and N-cetylpyridinium bromide, and in emulsions in the presence of a water-soluble initiator (hydrogen peroxide) were studied. The dilatometric method was chosen for the kinetic measurements of solutions of emulsifier not saturated with isoprene, and for emulsions. Experiments with solutions of emulsifier saturated with monomer were made during continuous saturation of the emulsifierinitiator solution with isoprene in the gaseous phase. All the experiments were made at 50° C in the absence of oxygen.</jats:p
