Factors Affecting Attribution: The Burlington Glass Works

    Get PDF

Giving Her A Voice: The Representation of the Black Woman in Four Short Stories

    Get PDF
Black women have had to work very hard to pull themselves up the social ladder. Literature reflects society, and the black female experience in the South is a part of American society which has not been overlooked by its literature. This thesis examines short stories by the similarities and tempered differences to develop a closer understanding of the true black female experience. The examination found that the gender and race of each author of the four short stories does not correspond to the amount of power each one gives to his or her black female character the way the reader might expect. These four stories collectively provide evidence that black women during the 1920’s, 30’s, and 40’s were the members of American society, particularly in the South, with the least amount of power. They were generally defined by their husbands and children. They had little or no control over money. They were not expected to voice their opinions and were in general completely oppressed

Developing a new text for Music 304 at Iowa State University and measuring its viability

From Bakersfield to Beale Street: A Regional History of American Rock \u27n\u27 Roll is the title of a new textbook by David Stuart and Ryan Sheeler, published in 2006 in an initial run by Kendall-Hunt Publishing in Dubuque IA. In the fall of 2004, Stuart and Sheeler received a preliminary agreement from Kendall-Hunt to create this new textbook. This book explores the development of rock music by looking at important regional centers in the first half of the Twentieth Century. This approach represents a unique niche in the study of rock music. By focusing on the regional elements of American rock music, students and scholars will find this new approach engaging and we expect that teachers will adopt the new text. The authors believe that a study of regional influences in rock will enhance student ability for critical thinking and listening, as well as quantifying the diversity issues inherent in the music. The goal of this thesis is to study the classroom viability of the text during its first release and use in the spring of 2006. The study will examine the creation, development, implementation, and evaluation of the textbook project, and will gather data to measure the book\u27s acceptance by students during its initial run

Guerrilla Altruism: Maximizing Acts of Kindness for Well-Being

    Get PDF
While many studies have analyzed the effect of acts of kindness on the giver, much less attention has been paid to the effects of these types of interactions on recipients. Even less research has been dedicated to what makes acts of kindness most potent to enhance recipients’ well-being. In this paper, I suggest that there may be an ideal “recipe” for acts of kindness to make the most impact to build positive emotions in individuals, and positive resonance in groups and communities. Utilizing ingredients such as art, beauty, creativity, surprise, and most importantly, a mysterious, rebellious edge, acts of kindness can be less about “randomness” and more about deliberate acts of altruism designed to promote well-being, so that recipients feel compelled to “pay it forward.

Visual Fragments and the Politics of Place: Feminist Advocacy in Czech Public Culture

    Get PDF
This article analyzes how Forum 50%'s visual “argumentative fragments” respond to and make visible the gendered norms of Czech political culture and advocate for women's increased levels of participation, representation, and legitimacy. Forum 50%'s visual rhetoric provides a compelling case to assess the argumentative resources of image events, the politics of place, and the role of humor for feminist work in the public sphere and on the public screen. Through an examination of Forum 50%'s visual strategies, this article demonstrates the importance of orchestrating a visible public image that commands political agency and dismantles gendered stereotypes while taking advantage of the rhetorical resources within a specific cultural context and place. Forum 50%'s campaign expands our understanding of gender and social protest, demonstrates the extent to which women can work toward political equality in a post-Communist environment, and explores the potential for visual argument to spark social change

Literature and Writing Connections With Mathematics in a First Grade Classroom

    Get PDF
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standard #2, communication in mathematics, is addressed. The benefits of integrating writing and the use of children\u27s literature in mathematics are studied. Writing strategies and an annotated bibliography of children\u27s literature that address instruction of first grade mathematics outcomes prescribed by the Yakima (WA) School District are developed. Recommendations for implementing the project are given

Cation Exchange Capacity of the Clay Fraction of Loess in Southwestern Iowa

    Get PDF
The cation exchange capacity of clay-size material extracted from soil with a low organic matter content is largely dependent on the kinds of clay minerals present. If the extracted clay is composed mostly of one kind of clay mineral, the exchange capacity will indicate what that mineral is. This paper reports on cation exchange capacity determinations made on the minus 2 micron clay-size range of selected samples of loess from the southwestern Iowa area

HOST TRACKING OR RESOURCE TRACKING? THE CASE OF PERIGLISCHRUS WING MITES (ACARINA: SPINTURNICIDAE) OF LEAF-NOSED BATS (CHIROPTERA: PHYLLOSTOMIDAE) FROM MICHOACAN, MEXICO

    Get PDF
We examined the issue of host tracking versus resource tracking in spinturnicid wing mites of the genus Periglischrus, which are associated with bats of the family Phyllostomidae. Several lines of evidence suggest that these mites are host tracking, that is they do not respond to environmental factors beyond the body of their host. With one exception only, each host species was infested by only one mite species. In some cases, a mite species infested more than one bat species, but these hosts were always closely related, composing a monophyletic group within our sample. Finally, GIS analyses were used to evaluate the effects of annual precipitation, vegetation, climate, and soils on mite distributions within their host distributions in Michoacán. Those associations having an adequate sample size resulted in non-significance, indicating that the mite distributions did not vary with respect to environmental factors. Additional data and analyses are needed to test each of these findings, as well as to evaluate other environmental factors not tested in this study which may be of importance to mite distribution.
