    Ideology, Status, and the Differential Success of Direct Parties Before the Supreme Court

    A substantial literature on lower federal courts and state courts suggests that the haves usually come out ahead in litigation because they possess superior resources for it and they reap advantages from their repeat player status. We investigate the success of 10 categories of litigants before the Warren, Burger, and Rehnquist Courts to determine whether the resources or experience of litigants has effects on Supreme Court outcomes paralleling those found in the courts below. While different categories of litigants are found to have very different rates of success, those differences do not consistently favor litigants with greater resources. A time series analysis of the success of different categories of litigants over the 36 years studied suggests that the changing ideological complexion of the Court has a greater impact on the success of litigants than differences among litigants in resources and experience

Through an empirical study and analysis, the authors conclude that the written rule governing publication offers little guidance to the judges and is often applied inconsistently within the circuit

    Irreducible pseudo 2-factor isomorphic cubic bipartite graphs

    A bipartite graph is {\em pseudo 2--factor isomorphic} if all its 2--factors have the same parity of number of circuits. In \cite{ADJLS} we proved that the only essentially 4--edge-connected pseudo 2--factor isomorphic cubic bipartite graph of girth 4 is K3,3K_{3,3}, and conjectured \cite[Conjecture 3.6]{ADJLS} that the only essentially 4--edge-connected cubic bipartite graphs are K3,3K_{3,3}, the Heawood graph and the Pappus graph. There exists a characterization of symmetric configurations n3n_3 %{\bf decide notation and how to use it in the rest of the paper} due to Martinetti (1886) in which all symmetric configurations n3n_3 can be obtained from an infinite set of so called {\em irreducible} configurations \cite{VM}. The list of irreducible configurations has been completed by Boben \cite{B} in terms of their {\em irreducible Levi graphs}. In this paper we characterize irreducible pseudo 2--factor isomorphic cubic bipartite graphs proving that the only pseudo 2--factor isomorphic irreducible Levi graphs are the Heawood and Pappus graphs. Moreover, the obtained characterization allows us to partially prove the above Conjecture

    Fast-wave Current Drive above the Slow-Wave Density Limit

    Fast-wave and slow-wave current drive near the mean gyrofrequency were compared in the Irvine Torus. The slow-wave current drive density limit observation was extended by an order of magnitude in wave frequency compared to previous tokamak results. At low densities, the fast-wave antenna was observed to launch slow waves which drove currents that suffered from the current drive density limit identical to waves launched from the slow-wave antenna. At higher densities, current was driven by the fast-wave antenna while none was driven by the slow-wave antenna

    Dune formation on the present Mars

    We apply a model for sand dunes to calculate formation of dunes on Mars under the present Martian atmospheric conditions. We find that different dune shapes as those imaged by Mars Global Surveyor could have been formed by the action of sand-moving winds occuring on today's Mars. Our calculations show, however, that Martian dunes could be only formed due to the higher efficiency of Martian winds in carrying grains into saltation. The model equations are solved to study saltation transport under different atmospheric conditions valid for Mars. We obtain an estimate for the wind speed and migration velocity of barchan dunes at different places on Mars. From comparison with the shape of bimodal sand dunes, we find an estimate for the timescale of the changes in Martian wind regimes.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figure

    BioNetGen is an open-source software package for rule-based modeling of complex biochemical systems. Version 2.2 of the software introduces numerous new features for both model specification and simulation. Here, we report on these additions, discussing how they facilitate the construction, simulation, and analysis of larger and more complex models than previously possible.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, 1 supplementary text file.     Millimetre observations of Pleiades stars: a lack of solar-analogue planetesimal discs at 100 Myr?

    Solar analogues approximately 100 Myr old may have dusty debris from collisions within evolving cometary belts, and such remnant discs might also be associated with earlier stellar-spin braking. We observed at 1.2 mm wavelength a sample of 17 fast and slow rotators, mostly single K dwarfs, in the 100 Myr Pleiades cluster. No dust was detected for individual stars or the ensemble, so there are no cold massive debris discs nor any discernible relation of such distant material to stellar spin. The net limits from these data and our earlier far-infrared results imply that the typical Pleiades G/K dwarf has a relative disc-to-star luminosity ≲ 2 × 10^(−4). Collisional evolution models have predicted greater luminosities at the 10^8 yr epoch, for debris discs evolving out of a proto-solar nebula. This suggests that substantial primordial discs such as that of the Sun are not the norm amongst young solar analogues, or that dynamical interactions with giant planets can remove much of the comet belt by as early as 100 Myr

    Prognostic factors of depression and depressive symptoms after hip fracture surgery: systematic review.

    BACKGROUND: Patients with hip fracture and depression are less likely to recover functional ability. This review sought to identify prognostic factors of depression or depressive symptoms up to 1 year after hip fracture surgery in adults. This review also sought to describe proposed underlying mechanisms for their association with depression or depressive symptoms. METHODS: We searched for published (MEDLINE, Embase, PsychInfo, CINAHL and Web of Science Core Collection) and unpublished (OpenGrey, Greynet, BASE, conference proceedings) studies. We did not impose any date, geographical, or language limitations. Screening (Covidence), extraction (Checklist for critical Appraisal and data extraction for systematic Reviews of prediction Modelling Studies, adapted for use with prognostic factors studies Checklist), and quality appraisal (Quality in Prognosis Studies tool) were completed in duplicate. Results were summarised narratively. RESULTS: In total, 37 prognostic factors were identified from 12 studies included in this review. The quality of the underlying evidence was poor, with all studies at high risk of bias in at least one domain. Most factors did not have a proposed mechanism for the association. Where factors were investigated by more than one study, the evidence was often conflicting. CONCLUSION: Due to conflicting and low quality of available evidence it is not possible to make clinical recommendations based on factors prognostic of depression or depressive symptoms after hip fracture. Further high-quality research investigating prognostic factors is warranted to inform future intervention and/or stratified approaches to care after hip fracture.     Coevolution of religious and political authority in Austronesian societies

    Authority, an institutionalized form of social power, is one of the defining features of the large-scale societies that evolved during the Holocene. Religious and political authority have deep histories in human societies and are clearly interdependent, but the nature of their relationship and its evolution over time is contested. We purpose-built an ethnographic dataset of 97 Austronesian societies and used phylogenetic methods to address two long-standing questions about the evolution of religious and political authority: first, how these two institutions have coevolved, and second, whether religious and political authority have tended to become more or less differentiated. We found evidence for mutual interdependence between religious and political authority but no evidence for or against a long-term pattern of differentiation or unification in systems of religious and political authority. Our results provide insight into how political and religious authority have worked synergistically over millennia during the evolution of large-scale societies
