The Potential Health Benefits of Brown Rice

    Get PDF
In many countries, rice contributes to better health by supplying dietary energy, proteins, fat, and various micronutrients. Many different rice species are cultivated in Japan and other rice-producing countries, in which we expect some varieties to prevent many diseases. In particular, the health effects of brown rice are apparent. In particular, rice bran ingredients accumulated evidence about their physiological and pharmacological activity. The Japanese diet has become a world heritage and famous worldwide, but knowledge about the benefits of rice eating is limited. Here, we would like to focus on the benefits of eating brown rice and recently developed low-protein fermented brown rice (LPFG) to improve the gut-kidney axis’s negative spiral in kidney disease patients. Other potential benefits of brown rice are the suppression of dementia and celiac disease. The category of “medical rice” represents the health effects of rice eating

Reduction of microtrenching and island formation in oxide plasma etching by employing electron beam charge neutralization

    Get PDF
Includes bibliographical references (page 2700).During plasma etching of oxide thin-film patterns, nonuniform charge buildup within etching features results in formation of microtrenches. Near the etch endpoint, the underlying film layer adjacent to the feature edges is exposed first, leaving an oxide island in the feature center and potentially causing underlayer damage before the endpoint is reached. Herein, a directional electron flux is added to the plasma ion flux incident on the etching substrate with the goal of minimizing microtrenching and oxide island formation. Scanning electron microscopic images of patterns etched with added electron irradiation show a reduction in microtrenching and oxide island formation as compared to patterns etched under identical conditions without electron irradiation. A computer simulation shows that the added electron irradiation reduces microtrenching by allowing more uniform ion flux to reach the feature bottom

Effects of extracted soy isoflavones alone on blood total and LDL cholesterol: Meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

When provided concurrently with soy protein for 1–3 months, soy isoflavones exert synergistic or additive cholesterol-lowering effects. This meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the effects of extracted soy isoflavones alone (not ingested concurrently with soy protein) on total and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. MEDLINE (1966–2007), EMBASE (1966–2007), CENTRAL (1966–2007), ICHUSHI (1983–2008), and CNKI (1979–2007) were searched for randomized placebo-controlled trials published in English, Japanese, and Chinese, describing the changes in lipid profiles in adult humans resulting from ingestion of extracted soy isoflavones for 1–3 months. Reference lists of relevant systematic reviews and meta-analyses were hand-searched. Meta-analysis of 10 and 9 trials with usable information using REVMAN found that an average of 70 mg soy isoflavones/day (27–132 mg, as the aglycone form) alone had a nonsignificant effect on total (0.01 mmol/L [95% CI: –0.12, 0.14]; P = 0.86) and LDL (0.03 mmol/L [95% CI: –0.11, 0.16]; P = 0.71) cholesterol in menopausal women, respectively. It is concluded that ingestion of about 70 mg extracted soy isoflavones/day alone for 1–3 months does not improve total and LDL cholesterol levels in normocholesterolemic menopausal women; further studies are needed to verify the effects of extracted soy isoflavones

Radio-frequency plasma potential variations originating from capacitive coupling from the coil antenna in inductively coupled plasmas

Includes bibliographical references (page 3434).The radio-frequency plasma potential in a stove top inductively coupled plasma source is measured by a capacitive probe. The experimental results are compared to a crude circuit model which accounts for capacitive coupling between the rf coil and the bulk plasma. The capacitive coupling model has three terms: the dielectric window capacitance, the sheath capacitance between the dielectric window and the bulk plasma, and the bulk plasma to ground sheath capacitance. The crude circuit model predictions are verified by quantitative comparison with the measured rf plasma potential in the bulk argon plasma at pressures from 1 to 20 mTorr and radio-frequency (13.56MHz) plasma power levels from 60 to 1000 W. Finally, the measured ion energy spectrum, as determined by a retarding potential analyzer, agrees with rf plasma potential measurements over the entire range of experimental conditions

Background: Authors successfully treated gestational diabetes by a very low carbohydrate diet without insulin and other drugs. Increased ketone bodies seemed to play an essential role in energy metabolism, and the fetus and newborn also showed hyperketosis. It is necessary to clarify how much ketone bodies were present in the placenta and umbilical cord in the fetus and newborn and the pregnant mother with or without gestational diabetes. Subjects and Methods: All cases were patients of Muneta OB/GYN Clinic in Chiba, where about 700 deliveries were done every year, 90% normal and 10% gestational diabetic. Blood of 313 mothers and babies at health check-up postpartum, 192 samples of placenta and cord blood at the delivery, and 122 cases were obtained at the time of miscarriage. Abbott's kit measured ÎČHB, and 101 samples obtained at the post partem health check-up were biochemically analyzed for both ÎČHB and glucose. The IBM-SPSS did the statistical analysis. Results: ÎČHB in Mothers' and newborns' blood at four days postpartum was 0.062 and 0.244 mmole/L (median), respectively, and glucose was 4.55±0.81 mmole/L. ÎČHB was high throughout the pregnancy; In the placenta, ÎČHB in the first-, second-and-third trimester was 1.95±0.9 mmole/L, 2.82±0.49 mmole/L, 1.87±0,65 mM/L, respectively. In the cord blood, it was 2.3±1.13 mmole/L, 1.36±0.76 mmole/L, and 0.69±0.6 mmole/L, respectively. Placental ÎČHB at the delivery was 1.99±0.78 mmole/L, and that of the umbilical cord was 0.75±0.36 mmole/L. In the first trimester miscarriage, ÎČHB in spontaneous abortion was 1.84±0.85 mmole/L, while it was 2.09±0.94 mmole/L in artificial abortion. Aborted cases in the second trimester showed 1.96±0.38 mmole/L ÎČHB and 3.74±0.75 mmole/L glucose in the cerebrospinal fluid. Discussion: Our data showed ÎČHB and glucose concentration in the human fetus and newborn under the normal physiological condition. ÎČHB was present in the placenta and umbilical cord blood throughout fetal life and after birth. Different concentrations between the placenta and umbilical cord blood suggested the fetus's uptake for energy and intrauterine growth. High ÎČHB in the cerebrospinal fluid suggested the effects on neuronal development

What Behaviors Are Important for Successful Weight Maintenance?

    Get PDF
Purpose. To examine behavioral factors related to successful weight maintenance. Methods. Subjects were 90 middle-aged participants who attended a weight loss program and were followed for one year. The subjects were classified into either successful weight maintainers (maintained a weight loss of 5% or more from their initial weight for one year) (SWM) or unsuccessful weight maintainers (USWM), and weight control practice, stress, obstacles, support, and self-efficacy during the program and follow-up period were compared. Results. SWM had mean loss of 12% from their initial weight during the program. They showed a greater improvement in their regularity of eating, walked more, and felt less stress regarding their increased physical activity than the USWM. During the follow-up period, significantly more SWM participants had self-efficacy (for measuring weight, practicing dietary objective, and assessing the practice and keeping records), actually kept records and measured weight more than the USWM participants. In contrast, more USWM participants felt stress about measuring weight. Conclusion. In addition to a substantial initial weight loss due to an increased amount of physical activity, having a higher self-efficacy and consistently keeping records of one's activities, as well as regularly weighing themselves, may be important for successful weight maintenance

We estimated the intake of individual flavonoids in a cross sectional study and clarified the major sources contributing to the flavonoid levels in the middle-aged Japanese women by a 24-h weighed dietary record study. The subjects included in the study were 516 free-living women. Each subject completed a 24-h weighed dietary record and received a health check-up. We used the Functional Food Factor database for estimating the intake of 5 major flavonoid intakes, i.e. flavan-3-ols, isoflavones, flavonols, flavanones and flavones. The mean intake of flavan-3-ols, isoflavones, flavonols, flavanones and flavones was 1277, 216, 58, 31 and 15 ”mol/d, respectively. The richest source of flavan-3-ols was green tea. The 3 major food sources of isoflavone were the processed soy foods and those of flavonol were the onion, moroheiya (nalta jute) and Japanese radish leaves. Grapefruit and citrus fruit juices were the major sources of flavanones, and tsurumurasaki (malabar spinach), green pepper and grapefruit were the main sources of flavone. Furthermore, analysis of sub-samples from middle-aged Japanese women indicated that there may be an association between flavonoid intake and the levels of oxidized LDL, which might be related to the incidence of cardiovascular diseases

Weak Lensing Mass Measurements of Substructures in COMA Cluster with Subaru/Suprime-Cam

We obtain the projected mass distributions for two Subaru/Suprime-Cam fields in the southwest region (r\simlt 60') of the Coma cluster (z=0.0236) by weak lensing analysis and detect eight subclump candidates. We quantify the contribution of background large-scale structure (LSS) on the projected mass distributions using SDSS multi-bands and photometric data, under the assumption of mass-to-light ratio for field galaxies. We find that one of eight subclump candidates, which is not associated with any member galaxies, is significantly affected by LSS lensing. The mean projected mass for seven subclumps extracted from the main cluster potential is = (5.06\pm1.30)10^12h^-1 M_sun after a LSS correction. A tangential distortion profile over an ensemble of subclumps is well described by a truncated singular-isothermal sphere model and a truncated NFW model. A typical truncated radius of subclumps, r_t\simeq 35 h^-1 kpc, is derived without assuming any relations between mass and light for member galaxies. The radius coincides well with the tidal radius, \sim42 h^-1 kpc, of the gravitational force of the main cluster. Taking into account the incompleteness of data area, a projection effect and spurious lensing peaks, it is expected that mass of cluster substructures account for 19 percent of the virial mass, with 13 percent statistical error. The mass fraction of cluster substructures is in rough agreement with numerical simulations.Comment: ApJ, accepted, 16 pages, 10 figures and 4 tables. Isobutyl acetate: electronic state spectroscopy by high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption, He(I) photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations

    Get PDF
The high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption spectrum of isobutyl acetate, C6H12O2, is presented here and was measured over the energy range 4.3–10.8 eV (290–115 nm). Valence and Rydberg transitions with their associated vibronic series have been observed in the photoabsorption spectrum and are assigned in accordance with new ab initio calculations of the vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths. The measured photoabsorption cross sections have been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of this ester in the Earth’s upper atmosphere (20–50 km). Calculations have also been carried out to determine the ionization energies and fine structure of the lowest ionic state of isobutyl acetate and are compared with a photoelectron spectrum (from 9.5 to 16.7 eV), recorded for the first time. Vibrational structure is observed in the first photoelectron band of this molecule

IncidĂȘncia proporcional por cĂąncer: comparação entre residentes no MunicĂpio de SĂŁo Paulo de diferentes origens: japonesa e brasileira

The percentual distributions of selected sites of cancer cases according to origin, sex and age are compared. Data were obtained from the Registry of Cancer of S. Paulo (School of Public Health of the University of S. Paulo, Brazil). The reference period for inhabitants of Japanese descent was 1969/78 and for those of Brazilian descent, the period was 1969/75. Standardized Proportionate Incidence Ratios (SPIR) with approximate 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) were evaluated using age specific Incidence Ratios of S. Paulo, 1973, as standards. The results agree with findings of previous works on mortality, but show different patterns according to origin. The well known fact that some sub-groups of a population may be different from the overall group is once again brought to the fore. Attention should be drawn to the differences detected for stomach, skin and prostate, in males, and for stomach, skin, cervix and uterus in females.SĂŁo comparadas as distribuiçÔes percentuais dos casos de cĂąncer de algumas localizaçÔes anatĂŽmicas segundo paĂs de nascimento, sexo e idade.
