    Time-decoupled high order continuous space-time finite element schemes for the heat equation

Engrg., 190 (2001), pp. 6685ā€”6708 Werder et al. demonstrated that time discretizations of the heat equation by a temporally discontinuous Galerkin finite element method could be decoupled by diagonalising the temporal ā€˜Gram matricesā€™. In this article we propose a companion approach for the heat equation by using a continuous Galerkin time discretization. As a result, if piecewise polynomials of degree d are used as the trial functions in time and the spatial discretization produces systems of dimension M then, after decoupling, d systems of size M need to be solved rather than a single system of sizeMd. These decoupled systems require complex arithmetic, as did Werder et al.ā€™s technique, but are amenable to parallel solution on modern multi-core architectures. We give numerical tests for temporal polynomial degrees up to six for three different model test problems, using both Galerkin and spectral element spatial discretizations, and show convergence and temporal superconvergence rates that accord with the bounds given by Aziz and Monk, Math. Comp. 52:186 (1989), pp. 255ā€”274. We also interpret error as a function of computational time and see that our high order schemes may offer greater efficiency that the Crank-Nicolson method in terms of accuracy per unit of computational timeā€”although in a multi-core world, with highly tuned iterative solvers, one has to be cautious with such claims. We close with a speculation on the application of these ideas to the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible fluids

    Device and method for frictionally testing materials for ignitability

    Test apparatus for determining ignition characteristics of various metal in oxidizer environments simulating operating conditions for materials is invented. The test apparatus has a chamber through which the oxidizing agent flows, and means for mounting a stationary test sample therein, a powered, rotating shaft in the chamber rigidly mounts a second test sample. The shaft is axially movable to bring the samples into frictional engagement and heated to the ignition point. Instrumentation connected to the apparatus provides for observation of temperatures, pressures, loads on and speeds of the rotating shaft, and torques whereby components of stressed oxygen systems can be selected which will avoid accidental fires under working conditions

    Sanitizing the fortress: protection of ant brood and nest material by worker antibiotics

    Social groups are at particular risk for parasite infection, which is heightened in eusocial insects by the low genetic diversity of individuals within a colony. To combat this, adult ants have evolved a suite of defenses to protect each other, including the production of antimicrobial secretions. However, it is the brood in a colony that are most vulnerable to parasites because their individual defenses are limited, and the nest material in which ants live is also likely to be prone to colonization by potential parasites. Here, we investigate in two ant species whether adult workers use their antimicrobial secretions not only to protect each other but also to sanitize the vulnerable brood and nest material. We find that, in both leaf-cutting ants and weaver ants, the survival of the brood was reduced and the sporulation of parasitic fungi from them increased, when the workers nursing them lacked functional antimicrobial-producing glands. This was the case for both larvae that were experimentally treated with a fungal parasite (Metarhizium) and control larvae which developed infections of an opportunistic fungal parasite (Aspergillus). Similarly, fungi were more likely to grow on the nest material of both ant species if the glands of attending workers were blocked. The results show that the defense of brood and sanitization of nest material are important functions of the antimicrobial secretions of adult ants and that ubiquitous, opportunistic fungi may be a more important driver of the evolution of these defenses than rarer, specialist parasites

    Detection of Leishmania infantum by PCR, serology and cellular immune response in a cohort study of Brazilian dogs

    The sensitivity and specificity of PCR, serology (ELISA) and lymphoproliferative response to Leishmania antigen for the detection of Leishmania infantum infection were evaluated in a cohort of 126 dogs exposed to natural infection in Brazil. For PCR, Leishmania DNA from bone-marrow was amplified with both minicircle and ribosomal primers. The infection status and time of infection of each dog were estimated from longitudinal data. The sensitivity of PCR in parasite-positive samples was 98%. However, the overall sensitivity of PCR in post-infection samples, from dogs with confirmed infection, was only 68%. The sensitivity of PCR varied during the course of infection, being highest (78ā€“88%) 0ā€“135 days post-infection and declining to around 50% after 300 days. The sensitivity of PCR also varied between dogs, and was highest in sick dogs. The sensitivity of serology was similar in parasite-positive (84%), PCR-positive (86%) and post-infection (88%) samples. The sensitivity of serology varied during the course of infection, being lowest at the time of infection and high (93ā€“100%) thereafter. Problems in determining the specificity of serology are discussed. The sensitivity and specificity of cellular responsiveness were low. These data suggest that PCR is most useful in detecting active or symptomatic infection, and that serology can be a more sensitive technique for the detection of all infected dogs
