    Place attachment in deprived neighbourhoods: The impacts of population turnover and social mix

    This paper examines the determinants of individual place attachment, focussing in particular on differences between deprived and others neighbourhoods, and on the impacts of population turnover and social mix. It uses a multi-level modelling approach to take account of both individual- and neighbourhood-level determinants. Data are drawn from a large sample government survey, the Citizenship Survey 2005, to which a variety of neighbourhood-level data have been attached. The paper argues that attachment is significantly lower in more deprived neighbourhoods primarily because these areas have weaker social cohesion but that, in other respects, the drivers of attachment are the same. Turnover has modest direct impacts on attachment through its effect on social cohesion. Social mix has very limited impacts on attachment and the effects vary between social groups. In general, higher status or more dominant groups appear less tolerant of social mix

    Prevalence and Predictors of Vitamin D Insufficiency in Children: A Great Britain Population Based Study

    Objectives To evaluate the prevalence and predictors of vitamin D insufficiency (VDI) in children In Great Britain. Design A nationally representative cross-sectional study survey of children (1102) aged 4–18 years (999 white, 570 male) living in private households (January 1997–1998). Interventions provided information about dietary habits, physical activity, socio-demographics, and blood sample. Outcome measures were vitamin D insufficiency (<50 nmol/L). Results Vitamin D levels (mean = 62.1 nmol/L, 95%CI 60.4–63.7) were insufficient in 35%, and decreased with age in both sexes (p<0.001). Young People living between 53–59 degrees latitude had lower levels (compared with 50–53 degrees, p = 0.045). Dietary intake and gender had no effect on vitamin D status. A logistic regression model showed increased risk of VDI in the following: adolescents (14–18 years old), odds ratio (OR) = 3.6 (95%CI 1.8–7.2) compared with younger children (4–8 years); non white children (OR = 37 [95%CI 15–90]); blood levels taken December-May (OR = 6.5 [95%CI 4.3–10.1]); on income support (OR = 2.2 [95%CI 1.3–3.9]); not taking vitamin D supplementation (OR = 3.7 [95%CI 1.4–9.8]); being overweight (OR 1.6 [95%CI 1.0–2.5]); <1/2 hour outdoor exercise/day/week (OR = 1.5 [95%CI 1.0–2.3]); watched >2.5 hours of TV/day/week (OR = 1.6[95%CI 1.0–2.4]). Conclusion We confirm a previously under-recognised risk of VDI in adolescents. The marked higher risk for VDI in non-white children suggests they should be targeted in any preventative strategies. The association of higher risk of VDI among children who exercised less outdoors, watched more TV and were overweight highlights potentially modifiable risk factors. Clearer guidelines and an increased awareness especially in adolescents are needed, as there are no recommendations for vitamin D supplementation in older children

    An Exploratory Study into the Factors Impeding Ethical Consumption

    Although consumers are increasingly engaged with ethical factors when forming opinions about products and making purchase decisions, recent studies have highlighted significant differences between consumers’ intentions to consume ethically, and their actual purchase behaviour. This article contributes to an understanding of this “ethical purchasing gap” through a review of existing literature, and the inductive analysis of focus group discussions. A model is suggested which includes exogenous variables such as moral maturity and age which have been well covered in the literature, together with further impeding factors identified from the focus group discussions. For some consumers, inertia in purchasing behaviour was such that the decision-making process was devoid of ethical considerations. Several manifested their ethical views through post-purchase dissonance and retrospective feelings of guilt. Others displayed a reluctance to consume ethically due to personal constraints, a perceived negative impact on image or quality, or an outright negation of responsibility. Those who expressed a desire to consume ethically often seemed deterred by cynicism, which caused them to question the impact they, as an individual, could achieve. These findings enhance the understanding of ethical consumption decisions and provide a platform for future research in this area

    Label-free fibre optic Raman spectroscopy with bounded simplex-structured matrix factorization for the serial study of serum in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

    Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an incurable neurodegenerative disease in urgent need of disease biomarkers for the assessment of promising therapeutic candidates in clinical trials. Raman spectroscopy is an attractive technique for identifying disease related molecular changes due to its simplicity. Here, we describe a fibre optic fluid cell for undertaking spontaneous Raman spectroscopy studies of human biofluids that is suitable for use away from a standard laboratory setting. Using this system, we examined serum obtained from patients with ALS at their first presentation to our centre (n = 66) and 4 months later (n = 27). We analysed Raman spectra using bounded simplex-structured matrix factorization (BSSMF), a generalisation of non-negative matrix factorisation which uses the distribution of the original data to limit the factorisation modes (spectral patterns). Biomarkers associated with ALS disease such as measures of symptom severity, respiratory function and inflammatory/immune pathways (C3/C-reactive protein) correlated with baseline Raman modes. Between visit spectral changes were highly significant (p = 0.0002) and were related to protein structure. Comparison of Raman data with established ALS biomarkers as a trial outcome measure demonstrated a reduction in required sample size with BSSMF Raman. Our portable, simple to use fibre optic system allied to BSSMF shows promise in the quantification of disease-related changes in ALS over short timescales

    The Central Region of Barred Galaxies: Molecular Environment, Starbursts, and Secular Evolution

    Despite compelling evidence that stellar bars drive gas into the inner 1--2 kpc or circumnuclear (CN) region of galaxies, there are few large, high resolution studies of the CN molecular gas and star formation (SF). We study a sample of local barred non-starbursts and starbursts with high-resolution CO, optical, Ha, RC, Br-gamma, and HST data, and find the following. (1) The inner kpc of bars differs markedly the outer disk and hosts molecular gas surface densities Sigma-gas-m of 500-3500 Msun pc-2, gas mass fractions of 10--30 %, and epicyclic frequencies of several 100--1000 km s-1 kpc-1.Consequently, gravitational instabilities can only set in at high gas densities and grow on a short timescale (few Myr). This high density, short timescale, `burst' mode may explain why powerful starbursts tend to be in the CN region of galaxies. (2) We suggest that the variety in CO morphologies is due to different stages of bar-driven inflow. At late stages, most of the CN gas is inside the outer inner Lindblad resonance (OILR), and has predominantly circular motions. Across the sample, we find bar pattern speeds with upper limits of 43 to 115 km s-1 kpc-1 and OILR radii of > 500 pc. (3) Barred starbursts and non-starbursts have CN SFRs of 3--11 and 0.1--2 Msun yr-1, despite similar CN gas mass. Sigma-gas-m in the starbursts is larger (1000--3500 Msun pc-2) and close to the Toomre critical density over a large region. (4) Molecular gas makes up 10%--30% of the CN dynamical mass (6--30 x 10^9 Msun).In the starbursts, it fuels CN SFRs of 3--11 Msun yr-1, building young, massive, high V/sigma components. We present evidence for such a pseudo-bulge in NGC 3351. Implications for secular evolution along the Hubble sequence are discussed.Comment: Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal.     Growth and body composition in pku children— a three-year prospective study comparing the effects of l-amino acid to glycomacropeptide protein substitutes

    Protein quality and quantity are important factors in determining lean body (muscle) mass (LBM). In phenylketonuria (PKU), protein substitutes provide most of the nitrogen, either as amino acids (AA) or glycomacropeptide with supplementary amino acids (CGMP-AA). Body composition and growth are important indicators of long-term health. In a 3-year prospective study comparing the impact of AA and CGMP-AA on body composition and growth in PKU, 48 children were recruited. N = 19 (median age 11.1 years, range 5–15 years) took AA only, n = 16 (median age 7.3 years, range 5–15 years) took a combination of CGMP-AA and AA, (CGMP50) and 13 children (median age 9.2 years, range 5–16 years) took CGMP-AA only (CGMP100). A dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan at enrolment and 36 months measured LBM, % body fat (%BF) and fat mass (FM). Height was measured at enrolment, 12, 24 and 36 months. No correlation or statistically significant differences (after adjusting for age, gender, puberty and phenylalanine blood concentrations) were found between the three groups for LBM, %BF, FM and height. The change in height z scores, (AA 0, CGMP50 +0.4 and CGMP100 +0.7) showed a trend that children in the CGMP100 group were taller, had improved LBM with decreased FM and % BF but this was not statistically significant. There appeared to be no advantage of CGMP-AA compared to AA on body composition after 3-years of follow-up. Although statistically significant differences were not reached, a trend towards improved body composition was observed with CGMP-AA when it provided the entire protein substitute requirement.publishersversionpublishe
