This paper focuses on miracle accounts in Bede’s Ecclesiastical History, especially accounts of visions of divine light, and argues that in order to understand the meaning and rationale of such accounts Bede’s understanding of the reliability and trustworthiness of his witnesses also needs to be considered. The paper argues that Bede attributes to those witnesses whom he perceives as credible in these matters not only rational and moral but also certain religious qualifications, which enable them to perceive and understand the spiritual meaning of the events which they relate and thus underpin their credibility
The estrogenic activity of phthalate esters in vitro
A large number of phthalate esters were screened for estrogenic activity using a recombinant yeast screen. a selection of these was also tested for mitogenic effect on estrogen-responsive human breast cancer cells. A small number of the commercially available phthalates tested showed extremely weak estrogenic activity. The relative potencies of these descended in the order butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) > dibutyl phthalate (DBP) > diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) > diethyl phthalate (DEP) > diisiononyl phthalate (DINP). Potencies ranged from approximately 1 x 10(6) to 5 x 10(7) times less than 17beta-estradiol. The phthalates that were estrogenic in the yeast screen were also mitogenic on the human breast cancer cells. Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) showed no estrogenic activity in these in vitro assays. A number of metabolites were tested, including mono-butyl phthalate, mono-benzyl phthalate, mono-ethylhexyl phthalate, mon-n-octyl phthalate; all were wound to be inactive. One of the phthalates, ditridecyl phthalate (DTDP), produced inconsistent results; one sample was weakly estrogenic, whereas another, obtained from a different source, was inactive. analysis by gel chromatography-mass spectometry showed that the preparation exhibiting estrogenic activity contained 0.5% of the ortho-isomer of bisphenol A. It is likely that the presence of this antioxidant in the phthalate standard was responsible for the generation of a dose-response curve--which was not observed with an alternative sample that had not been supplemented with o,p'-bisphenol A--in the yeast screen; hence, DTDP is probably not weakly estrogenic. The activities of simple mixtures of BBP, DBP, and 17beta-estradiol were assessed in the yeast screen. No synergism was observed, although the activities of the mixtures were approximately additive. In summary, a small number of phthalates are weakly estrogenic in vitro. No data has yet been published on whether these are also estrogenic in vitro. No data has yet been published on whether these are also estrogenic in vivo; this will require tests using different classes of vertebrates and different routes of exposure
Quantum repeaters based on individual electron spins and nuclear-spin-ensemble memories in quantum dots
Inspired by recent developments in the control and manipulation of quantum
dot nuclear spins, which allow for the transfer of an electron spin state to
the surrounding nuclear-spin ensemble for storage, we propose a quantum
repeater scheme that combines individual quantum dot electron spins and
nuclear-spin ensembles, which serve as spin-photon interfaces and quantum
memories respectively. We consider the use of low-strain quantum dots embedded
in high-cooperativity optical microcavities. Quantum dot nuclear-spin ensembles
allow for the long-term storage of entangled states, and heralded entanglement
swapping is performed using cavity-assisted gates. We highlight the advances in
quantum dot technologies required to realize our quantum repeater scheme which
promises the establishment of high-fidelity entanglement over long distances
with a distribution rate exceeding that of the direct transmission of photons.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figure

Generalized information entropies depending only on the probability distribution
Systems with a long-term stationary state that possess as a spatio-temporally
fluctuation quantity can be described by a superposition of several
statistics, a "super statistics". We consider first, the Gamma, log-normal and
-distributions of . It is assumed that they depend only on , the
probability associated with the microscopic configuration of the system. For
each of the three distributions we calculate the Boltzmann factors and
show that they coincide for small variance of the fluctuations. For the Gamma
distribution it is possible to calculate the entropy in a closed form,
depending on , and to obtain then an equation relating with . We also propose, as other examples, new entropies close related with the
Kaniadakis and two possible Sharma-Mittal entropies. The entropies presented in
this work do not depend on a constant parameter but on . For the
-Gamma distribution and its corresponding Boltzmann factor
and the associated entropy, we show the validity of the saddle-point
approximation. We also briefly discuss the generalization of one of the four

Anonymous shell companies: A global audit study and field experiment in 176 countries
To test whether firms behave consistently with international law prohibiting anonymous incorporation, we conducted a global audit study and field experiment, using data from 1639 incorporation firms in 176 countries. We requested anonymous incorporation and randomly assigned references to international law, threat of penalties, norms of appropriate behavior, or a placebo. We find a substantial number of firms willing to flout international standards and show that those in OECD countries proved significantly less compliant with rules than in developing countries or tax havens. Firms in tax havens displayed significantly greater compliance and were sensitive to experimental interventions invoking international law
Edge enhancement improves disruptive camouflage by emphasising false edges and creating pictorial relief
Disruptive colouration is a visual camouflage composed of false edges and boundaries. Many disruptively camouflaged animals feature enhanced edges; light patches are surrounded by a lighter outline and/or a dark patches are surrounded by a darker outline. This camouflage is particularly common in amphibians, reptiles and lepidopterans. We explored the role that this pattern has in creating effective camouflage. In a visual search task utilising an ultra-large display area mimicking search tasks that might be found in nature, edge enhanced disruptive camouflage increases crypsis, even on substrates that do not provide an obvious visual match. Specifically, edge enhanced camouflage is effective on backgrounds both with and without shadows; i.e. this is not solely due to background matching of the dark edge enhancement element with the shadows. Furthermore, when the dark component of the edge enhancement is omitted the camouflage still provided better crypsis than control patterns without edge enhancement. This kind of edge enhancement improved camouflage on all background types. Lastly, we show that edge enhancement can create a perception of multiple surfaces. We conclude that edge enhancement increases the effectiveness of disruptive camouflage through mechanisms that may include the improved disruption of the object outline by implying pictorial relief

Mountain wave turbulence in the presence of directional wind shear over the Rocky Mountains
Mountain wave turbulence in the presence of directional wind shear over the Rocky Mountains in Colorado is investigated. Pilot Reports (PIREPs) are used to select cases in which moderate or severe turbulence encounters were reported in combination with significant directional wind shear in the
upstream sounding from Grand Junction, CO (GJT). For a selected case, semi-idealized numerical simulations are carried out using the WRF-ARW atmospheric model, initialized with the GJT atmospheric sounding and a realistic but truncated orography profile. In order to isolate the role of directional wind shear in causing wave breaking, sensitivity tests are performed to exclude the variation of the atmospheric stability with height, the speed shear, and the mountain amplitude as dominant wave breaking mechanisms.
Significant downwind transport of instabilities is detected in horizontal flow cross-sections, resulting in mountain-wave-induced turbulence occurring at large horizontal distances from the first wave breaking point (and from the
orography that generates the waves). The existence of an asymptotic wake, as predicted by Shutts for directional shear flows, is hypothesized to be responsible for this downwind transport. Critical levels induced by directional wind shear are further studied by taking 2D power spectra of the magnitude of the horizontal velocity perturbation field. In these spectra, a rotation of the most energetic wave modes with the background wind, as well as perpendicularity
between the background wind vector and the wave-number vector of those modes at critical levels, can be found, which is consistent with the mechanism expected to lead to wave breaking in directional shear flows
