    Quantum Mutual Information Capacity for High Dimensional Entangled States

    High dimensional Hilbert spaces used for quantum communication channels offer the possibility of large data transmission capabilities. We propose a method of characterizing the channel capacity of an entangled photonic state in high dimensional position and momentum bases. We use this method to measure the channel capacity of a parametric downconversion state, achieving a channel capacity over 7 bits/photon in either the position or momentum basis, by measuring in up to 576 dimensions per detector. The channel violated an entropic separability bound, suggesting the performance cannot be replicated classically.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    Cowboy Obstetrics--A Calving Primer

    Dystocia plagues cattle producers throughout Idaho. A team of Extension educators and specialists designed a curriculum and conducted calving schools to teach dystocia management principles and demonstrate methods to reduce stress during birth and enhance the potential for calf survival. Over 300 ranchers and ranch employees attended the intensive, 1-day schools. Pre- and post-tests showed a 47 to 58% increase in attendees\u27 knowledge about dystocia and dystocia management practices. Follow-up telephone surveys conducted 9 months later indicated attendees retained at least a portion of the information taught and saved an average of 1.6 calves per ranch

    Spectral Simplicity of Apparent Complexity, Part II: Exact Complexities and Complexity Spectra

    The meromorphic functional calculus developed in Part I overcomes the nondiagonalizability of linear operators that arises often in the temporal evolution of complex systems and is generic to the metadynamics of predicting their behavior. Using the resulting spectral decomposition, we derive closed-form expressions for correlation functions, finite-length Shannon entropy-rate approximates, asymptotic entropy rate, excess entropy, transient information, transient and asymptotic state uncertainty, and synchronization information of stochastic processes generated by finite-state hidden Markov models. This introduces analytical tractability to investigating information processing in discrete-event stochastic processes, symbolic dynamics, and chaotic dynamical systems. Comparisons reveal mathematical similarities between complexity measures originally thought to capture distinct informational and computational properties. We also introduce a new kind of spectral analysis via coronal spectrograms and the frequency-dependent spectra of past-future mutual information. We analyze a number of examples to illustrate the methods, emphasizing processes with multivariate dependencies beyond pairwise correlation.     Outcomes for patients with severe chronic neutropenia treated with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor

    Severe chronic neutropenia (SCN), defined as blood neutrophils \u3c0.5 × 109/L for \u3e3 months, is an uncommon hematological condition associated with recurrent and severe bacterial infections. After short-term clinical trials showed the benefits of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) treatment for SCN, SCNIR (Severe Chronic Neutropenia International Registry) opened to determine the long-term benefits and safety of this treatment. This report summarizes findings from more than 16 000 patient-years of prospective observations for patients with congenital and acquired SCN. We observed that adverse outcomes depend on the underlying etiology. Myelodysplasia (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) occur infrequently and largely in patients with congenital neutropenias. Having cyclic or chronic autoimmune/ idiopathic neutropenia portends a favorable prognosis. A few patients with idiopathic neutropenia evolve to develop lymphoid malignancies, but they do not appear to be at increased risk of myeloid malignancies, even with very long-term G-CSF therapy. Progression to systemic autoimmune diseases, bone marrow (BM) failure, aplastic anemia, or nonmyeloid malignancies are not expected consequences of SCN or treatment with G-CSF

    Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Using Si Microwire Arrays

    Arrays of B-doped p-Si microwires, diffusion-doped with P to form a radial n+ emitter and subsequently coated with a 1.5-nm-thick discontinuous film of evaporated Pt, were used as photocathodes for H_2 evolution from water. These electrodes yielded thermodynamically based energy-conversion efficiencies >5% under 1 sun solar simulation, despite absorbing less than 50% of the above-band-gap incident photons. Analogous p-Si wire-array electrodes yielded efficiencies <0.2%, largely limited by the low photovoltage generated at the p-Si/H_2O junction
